The AOC Way: The Secrets of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Success

Rate this book
Understanding and applying the wisdom of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez!
In an incredibly short time, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has galvanized the country on issues of national importance. This young member of Congress has motivated Democrats to confront climate change and income inequality and is upending conventional wisdom about how young women, especially women of color, are supposed to behave.  Her background, including a family that fell out of the middle class due to health care challenges, has driven her to champion those on the margins, such as low-wage workers, immigrants, people of color, and younger people who face a future of climate disruption and instability.

This book takes life lessons from the rising star known as AOC and offers readers a chance to apply them to their own lives.  In five chapters, The AOC Way weaves substantive issues and AOC’s experiences to understand how she so quickly came to dominate media coverage in America but also to drive real change in what seems like a lightening flash. AOC has demonstrated some key values and commitments on her way to success, such as believing in yourself and not letting haters take you off course; working hard and being prepared to prove your talents; bringing your experiences to your work by not forgetting how you got where you are; challenging the status quo; and staying true to your friends and allies.

I love AOC but think I would have preferred a book written in her own voice, rather than in the author’s narrative which often took away from learning about AOC herself.

Good book but very YA geared. Perfect for the 17yo or 19yo female, but not for the 43yo man. Use as a great gift for the young lady in your life: daughter, niece, friend.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this outstanding book for review. My review opinions are my own .

This is a well written narrative of the rise of our great Democratic Senator Ocasio. The author has touched on her humble beginnings which inspired her in the future to fight for average Americans, for health care and for women's rights, for diversity and for fair housing. To learn the background of this brilliant senator is both captivating and educational as to how a grass roots campaign can begin from a place of compassion and reality for real Americans to grow into such a great American success story. Her commitment to America and her drive is inspiring.
The Senator has both galvanized and united congress in her first term and her accomplishments are great. This is the story of the Senator and how her passionate belief in fairness, diversity and civil rights inspire her to new heights . This is the story of her family background, her great love of country and her intelligence and understanding on policy and law of our Constitution. Senator Ocasio makes us proud once again to be American as she fights for the average person and takes on the corruption in our current government without backing down. Through death threats and misogynist vitriol she stands in her truth and as a patriotic American I am thankful for her commitment and her patriotism.
I found this very inspiring and had gained even more respect for the Senator after reading this. Well done to the author for this informative story of one of our greatest Senators of today. I highly recommend this book.

Thanks to Edelweiss and Simon Shuster for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would have rated it a bit higher if it's a genuine biography since I found parts of the author's own personal mixed in the book a bit confusing. Despite the inconsistencies, this book is inspirational and is a gritty portrayal of how grassroots movement can overcome big political machinery. It is not easy to become a leader at such a young age and with so many things against you. But AOC is quite the phenomenon even for non-Americans like me. Her fearless, witty comeback against her detractors is quite impressive. We need more smart, strong, female politicians of colour because the world doesn't only belong to middle-aged white men. I really do pray that this kind of changes in politics and government can be replicated in other parts of the world.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review at the same time as The RBG Way. I found this book much of the same - interesting but just one person's perception on how they achieved their success. 2.5stars
