UPDATED to include part III
2.5* This to me is possibly okay, and I know that puts me as an outlier.
I downloaded this with a bunch of books and never noticed the sample part, until today actually. My bad. So this "book" comes in two parts, Unbroken I and Unbroken II, but to find out what happens you have to subscribe to get the Unbroken III. As I read the book in bed last night it was pretty irritating to find out I couldn't see if the plot was as I expected, or even finish it. I subscribed this morning, and I hate being forced to subscribe, but so far nothing other than a note that I'm on the list. We'll see. TOOK A FEW DAYS but it did arrive, so that's good.
As to the story: I dislike the main character who, to me, comes across as heartless and insensitive. There are some editing issues as well. And although steampunk, the strong point of the steampunk element is all in the preface.
The problem with short stories like this is that there is no room for any world-building, and that's a shame as there are hints that the world could be very dark and dystopian.
I might revise this if I get to part three soon.
Part III
It's actually a very short section. So I'm not impressed that I had to wait to download what amounts to a chapter or two. This section is just about Sex.
MC is obsessed with meeting someone who is unbroken - which means that they have no physical deformities. She spends every penny she has on one night of sex with an unbroken. No one else is good enough. Sorry. No redemptions. No more plot. It is obvious to me, who the unbroken one is, but it is just. Not for me.

WOW!
Living in a post-apocalyptic world is a lonely and bleak existence. Not much hope for anything else to come but Cappy gets one chance in a lifetime. Cappy and Pet are characters I really enjoyed following. This is a short and very unique story. Due to the length of this book, I can't go into the story without spoilers. But I can say that the originality alone is worth more than 5 stars. I sincerely hope that the author will write more about Cappy and Pet. This was far too short and certainly tastes like; I want more.

I really like this imaginative tale, which quickly draws you into a vividly described dark and divided world, telling the story of a resourceful and determined woman pursuing her ambitions to find love in unlikely surrounds and to make the most of her chances for a better life. Effectively mixing wonderful steampunk imagery and gritty canal-side settings with human fraility, lust and love in unlikely places, Sam Skyborne's Unbroken is a heartwarming read.
Would be wonderful to have more tales from this broken city...
