Micheal Mullen - born into wealth and solid family ties - is an unlikely hero. He lives a blessed life in 1880s Philadelphia society, but when his sister, Lucy, disappears, his entire world will soon change.

This strong, confident professor of literature must leave his sheltered life and go west. His journey leads him to a rough ranching town in northern Colorado, where he'll have to learn to survive while trying to discover why his sister was taken. Never having left the city before, Michael is tested at every turn. Colorado is about as far from home as he could be, and he feels clumsy, awkward, and horribly out of place. His situation hardly improves when he meets Sarah Donnelly and her three brothers, a family that may be able to lead him to his sister. Sarah is rash, temperamental, and the furthest thing from a lady Michael has ever seen - and her three brothers prove to Michael at every opportunity that the West is not for the meek. With the help of the Donnelly family, Michael must learn to survive and master the skills needed to confront his fears - and face off against the greatest threat to his own family.

“Sweet Twisted Pine” by Lori R. Hodges is a historical fiction mystery set in Philadelphia in the 1800s.

Michael Mullen, a well-established Professor of Literature from Philadelphia was living a quiet and successful life. Michael was born in this city, having lived a sheltered life; not ever having leaving this huge Northern metropolis. While relaxing at home one day, a police officer suddenly knocks on the door in the middle of the night! He asks Michael to accompany him to a location where a dead body is located.

Startled and worried why he was asked such strange request, he dutifully follows the officer's request to an alley not far from his residence. He's introduced to the homicide officer who is examining a dead corpse with a blanket thrown over the body. Michael is asked to take a peep at the corpse to see if he recognizes it; but to no avail. Confuse to why he was asked specifically about the corpse, he's told that the dead person has something in his hands. The object in his hand begins a long and dangerous search for his beloved lost sister who is a missing person. Where is she? What is in the dead corpse hands? What does this object have to do with his sister's disappearance?

This is an old time 1880s thriller and mystery odyssey that begins with a mystery and ends with a surprise. It's very difficult to pen these types of books unless one has done extensive research on the time period! Hodges did an outstanding job! All the characters fit the time period very well as do the locations and settings. The syntax is dead on and the cadence is perfect!

“Sweet Twisted Pine” is an excellent book to read and I was delighted to review it. I must also mention that the editorial standards were professionally executed; as without this attribute the book could have been wanting. Don't let the title throw you off – you’ll see why it's very appropriate when you've completed the reading.

Finally, I would like to say that I felt this book would be a good candidate for a Part Two! It's very much the type of story that could go another round. “Sweet Twisted Pine” by Lori R. Hodges is easily a five-star work of art!

I wrote this book about 15 years ago when I worked 24 hour shifts as a paramedic. I had been researching my family ancestry and discovered my great-great-grandparents, Michael Mullen and Sarah Donnelly. I started writing a fictional story and used the two of them as my inspiration. After many years with the book sitting in a chest at home, I finally pulled it back out this year and had it published. I hope you enjoy it.
