Rate this book
A rollicking fairy-tale adventure from the makers of The Adventures of Alfie Onion, The Cherry Pie Princess and Tom & Tallulah and the Witches' Feast.
Princess Persephone Stephanie Tiffany Jane (“Pom” for short) HATES being a princess. Her parents have no time for her – especially her dad, the King of Strüggen, who’s busy plotting against the neighbouring kingdom of Thrum. So when a friendly young orphan named Billy appears at the palace, Pom decides to run off with him. She’s after adventure, and knows exactly where she’ll find it: Bullion Island, a tiny patch of land that stands exactly between Strüggen and Thrum. Legend has it that there's pirate treasure hiding in Bullion's sea-caves, guarded by a fearsome dragon – but nobody knows for sure, because no sailor has managed a return trip. But Pom isn’t afraid of dragons … or anything else! "Vivian French is a sublime storyteller" – Sunday Telegraph

Was going to read this to my daughter but I was too slow and she read it to herself. She said she really enjoyed it.

I asked what her favourite bit was and she recounted the story.

Dnf. The author narrates this book, and she does a great job, but some of her voice acting grated on my very sensitive hearing. Pity. It looks like a good book.

French is a story-teller who knows how to grab hold of the reader and send them spinning through a tale, adding a bit of drama and loads of laughter to your reading adventures with an utterly mad-cap cast of characters. Pom is wonderful; bold, clever and spontaneous, she never hesitates to take action. Billy is her perfect companion, considerate, good with a plan and well able to think on his feet. And the dragon! The dragon is an outstanding character; full of contradictions and a lovable personality. There are many little twists and turns to hold interest in this rollicking book, and a few lessons on the effect of world-events and how to maintain compassion and resourcefulness that give pause for thought. The kids win the day here and cleverly outwit the adults in charge to the endless entertainment of the reader. Throughout the book, you'll find charming and compelling black and white illustrations that add a great deal to the tale. Fast-paced, funny and truly intriguing, this is one to share with everyone!
