This book has been a complete letdown. It started off being great; some of the puzzles were easier, some others more complicated, but pretty much all of them were entertaining and engaging regardless of their difficulty. Even the story was somewhat interesting. However, when I was halfway through, the book started to go downhill: many puzzles were long and tedious, others had solutions which didn’t make much sense, and to top it all off, more and more mistakes started to pop up everywhere in the puzzles, making them even more difficult and boring to solve (this last problem was mostly because the Spanish translation was really sloppy, although some of the mistakes were definitely not because of it). Besides, the way to solve the last chapter of the book was a sheer disappointment, and it certainly left a sour taste. So, even tough at first I tought this would be one of my 5 star rated books, in the end I’m not even sure if it deserves 3 stars. All in all, I guess it had many wonderful puzzles I had so much fun with, but despite looking so promising in the beginning, the feeling was ruined after the first half of the book. A real shame.
Další z hlavolamových knížek. A pořádně obšírná, přes dvě stovky stránek.
The puzzles were a bit too difficult and similar from chapter to chapter and the overall plot was not appealing enough for me to want to solve the puzzles and move on. I ended up just skimming the book from the halfway point and skipping to the end to know how the story ended. Not for me.
The puzzles were fun, once you knew what was being asked of you. And you never knew that because the whole sequence of them was pretty illogical. Some were a little too subjective to be possible. Some were entirely pointless because the only logical answer was staring you in the face, even before you'd done any of the hard graft.
A couple of puzzles (bubble beads and Marks 3s) would have taken an enormous amount of work to finish and I just found I wanted to be done with it.
And this is because there were numerous errors!
1) every page has a morse code hint on it. Everytime G was required, D was used by mistake. 2) the bubble bead game says pop the groups of 3 or more. But the answer requires a group of 3 or more to make up the hidden digits. You would never get any hidden digits because it would also pop. 3) a code written backwards and in a mirror changes digital numbers so the answer is wrong. You have to use the number they have in the solution, not the actual solution. 4) there are a couple of times when they appear to have not proofread it well enough. "There is only one solution" nope, there are 2. But one doesn't spell out a fish. "Right, up, up, up" has too many Ups, changing the answer and making it so you have to use their solution.
So I did enjoy the puzzles but I pretty much had to reverse engineer them all.
Overall quality of the book 5* Overall enjoyment vs frustration ratio 1* Overall story - meh. Overall review therefore 3*

This was borrowed and I could have done with a photocopier as a lot of puzzles were 3D (and even if it was mine I don't think I could bear to cut it). I mostly managed with some cheating. The mix of puzzles was quite good but some were too long winded (especially that bubble pop one). The story itself was very man-oriented and not very interesting for me personally.
