Strange Magic

Rate this book
A witch without pedigree is the most dangerous kind.

When Elsie finds herself transported into an unusual world of magic, she knows it'll take more than basic spell-work to survive.

She's a magical misfit, a witch without a pedigree and an orphan. Three strikes against her and it's only day one at the academy.

Then there are the three men she is strangely drawn to: a ruggedly handsome wolf shifter, a hard-bodied mage (with more secrets than spells), and a devilishly handsome ghost who is struggling to uncover his past.

What begins as a strange adventure into a world where nothing is quite as it seems, quickly turns into a race to unlock the closely guarded secrets of her past before it's too late.

Strange Magic is the gripping first story in the Misfits of Magic series. If you enjoy stories filled with enchanting creatures, otherworldly monsters, shifters, and slow-burn, why choose reverse harem romance, this is the series for you!

Orphan Elsie (FMC) has a huge culture shock when she finds out that the town shes been living in has a secret Supernatural world running along side it. Oh and that shes also a witch. Which gives her the opportunity to enrol at the Misfit Academy where is instantly met with ridicule and distrust because she doesnt know her own background. The only redeeming grace is she finds friends in Mason (a wolf shifter and her protector which is one background story) & Erik (an anti-social, loner ghost). Who are both attracted to her. She also seems to have attracted an enemy on the form of bully - Jonah. A guy with his own set of problems. I loved the dynamic between the four of them. Each with their own complications but they seem to work together perfectly. Their relationship together is a really sweet one too especially with Elsie & Mason. Its a great beginning to this series though & i really enjoyed reading it

Meh~ About 30% through ALL tell NO show theres probs been about 3 outloud convos everything happens off "screen" its not offensive but its not likeable either... its kinda like a childs diary... bit confusing over the place no real concept of how to logically or chronologically express a story but generally decent enough to read if only for the amusement at their expressed imagination and ideas rather than the execution... sadly i mean because it really is a nice concept its just conveyed so poorly and boring in the in head monologue off screen nothing happens but your told about it off hand through her after thoughts or another characters (multi pov) that it just seems so disconnected like i dont care about the chick the world the story anything cause its told in such a weird way that its almost like hearing some stranger tell you their weird over the place dream on the news while trying to sell you something that will help you remember your dreams too! While your there half asleep trying to decide if you should just wait it out for the next segment or move your sleepy self off the comfy couch and get the remote... like thats what the experience is... i just its so blah that i dont even know how to feel about it really except a sort of overall Meh vibe. Very strange... tempted to read it cause i keep wnjoyably spacing out into a better version of what the book could be because my brain cant handle the actual book and is instead using it as a prompt to make its own story lol so idk maybe its good for daydreaming/falling asleep? There are far better books out there but i mean other than a serious knock out vibe (30% in so far it wont hurt you) if your interested in the setup -which the blurb feels very like ive been hypnotised into having powdered milk versus the real milk that was advertised... - and still think its worth a shot then i hope you enjoy it. But eh id say for most people certainly anyone who is older than a young teen that this is largely just a waste of time. Like reality tv. It passes the time its not good but it gives your brain a break for a bit so its not totally bad either... overall enter at your own risk...

**********MILD SPOILERS AHEAD********

My main problem is that this reads like a YA book. None of the main characters had the complexity and depth that you would expect of an adult. If the book was changed to be set in high school instead of college and the characters were aged around 16 instead of 21-24, it would be a much more believable read and I would raise my rating. How it stands though, everything is a bit too "butterflies and rainbows"...all the main characters come from difficult lives (orphanages, death of parents, abusive parents, being lonely and solitary for 100 years, trapped in wolf form for 20 years, etc.) but the only emotion they express over their pasts is loneliness. I do understand that loneliness could be a big part of it and serves to bring them all together, but I'd like to see a greater breadth of emotion--some snark, edge, angst, anger, personality. Elsie can be described as nice and unsure. Her personality ranges between these two emotions the entire book. Although she is likable, I wanted more. The villain was also a little too predictable and mustache twirl-y. Overall, this book was just a bit too naive and not unique enough. An interesting aspect of the story for me is her parentage, and although I think it might be an obvious twist who her dad is, the identify of her mother and nature as a witch (dark or light) is intriguing.

Ok were do I begin!!! I really like and enjoy this book but I was expecting more from this RH book. It was just too naive and not unique enough for a adult read. If it was meant for a YA then I wouldn't have a problem with it but these characters are supposed to be in college. I will say this much though the only thing that really held my attention was Elsie parentage the fact that we still don't know what it is. I'm really hoping that it's not a obvious twist who her dad is that has us hitting are forehead. At least we know in fact that her mom is a witch still not sure if a good or bad witch but I'm interested to find out. Overall a good read and a good start for a new series. Looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
