All I want is to be left alone in my average home / But why do I always feel like I'm in The Twilight Zone? (Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell).

To answer your burning question… yes, it is very possible to get jump scared by still images. In fact, it’s a lesson I seem to relearn every time I turn the page while reading this manga. And yeah, I know that’s not really too much of a Spooky Endorsement™ coming from me, considering I get startled by anything vaguely human shaped whenever I’m walking around, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that this manga really does have some of the best (meaning scary af) ghost/monster designs I’ve seen in a horror story. Anyway, the basic premise is that one day while waiting for the bus, a high school girl named Miko suddenly gains the “ability” to see them. "Them" being freakish apparitions of the afterlife constantly haunting the realm of the living. Well, maybe that’s what they are. The thing is, we know about as much about these gnarly creatures as Miko does, and this series uses their mysterious origins to greatly enhance their horrific nature. All Miko knows is that if she acknowledges their presence, letting them know that she can see them, they suddenly turn hostile and attack her (thus, supplying the aforementioned jump-scares). Oooh spooky, right? No really, it is quite scary. This is such a cliché thing to say, but what this manga does best is understanding that “less is more” (I know, I rolled my eyes too), and while there’s a lot of vague lore implied about these creatures that’s ever present throughout the narrative, we never truly get any concrete answers as to what they are, or why Miko randomly gained the ability to see them. I know that constantly staying in the dark about what the hell’s going on can be frustrating for a lot of readers, but I’m always going to be a staunch defender of open-ended narratives! Take the ending for The Thing (spoilers for the ending of The Thing) for example: the whole thing seemingly ends abruptly, not definitively answering the burning question of whether or not Keith David or Kurt Russell are The Thing or not. The answer isn’t given to us because the truth isn't the point of the movie. See, even if they were both human (which is what I believe, because it hammers in the message more succinctly in my opinion), the characters are already so riddled with suspicion towards each other that it still wouldn’t matter, they’d never believe it anyway (end of spoilers for the ending of The Thing). That’s why I’m really enjoying the “go with the flow” pace that this manga strictly adheres to, because anything my suspicious mind comes up with will always be a lot spookier than whatever the author’s actually cooking up. Besides, I’m more than happy being drip-fed information, knowing just as much as the main character does at any given time. And I don’t need to know every little answer to every little question posed throughout the story, and as long as the eventual ending stays true to Miko’s journey, then I’ll be more than happy to call this series a masterpiece of the horror genre.

I was a bit afraid that this manga was going to lead nowhere and would continuously play on the gimmick that Mieruko just tries to ignore all these yokai -- however, it seems that the plot is (really) slowly coming together and there seem to be (a bit of) character development as well. Hence, I won't be giving up on this manga :)

It's cool how this manga is developing an internal mythology as it goes along: the seers and their powers (or lack thereof), the cat spirits (or are they foxes?) who step in to help Miko on a "three wishes" basis, as well as the idea that these weird looking monsters have their origins in us.

Loses some points for fight scenes that are hard to follow, and Hana's character design. She's been around since the beginning of the story and it wouldn't work to change her design, even if Izumi decided they wanted to. Still, I can really do without modern shonen manga's seeming requirement to have at least one character who's got boobs the size of canteloupes.

I like Yuria as a character, although her perceptions of Miko "using her powers" were stretching an idea rather thin, I think. She'll be a fun addition to the cast as someone who has something in common with Miko that both of them must conceal from Hana.

This artist truly creatures some of the ugliest and most disturbing ghost/creatures/monsters ever.

This continues the storyline of the last. Still Mieruko refuses to look at any ghost in her seights. However, when a new girl comes on the scene and claims she can see ghost it might be hard to avoid it forever. Seeing as the new girl can only see normal level ghost and not the big vicious creatures Mieruko can it gets to be a challenge.

Inbetween all the disgusting creatures and some cool brutal fight scenes with ghost/spirts verse each other came a few funny moments and a tender moment of a new mother expecting her second child after losing her first. It's rather touching and done well. And the last few pages gave me a chill down my spine for our main characters.

Overall, a really cute at times, disturbing at others, and touching somehow all in one package. I'm really digging this series.

i liked this volume a lot more than the first one. it was less sexualized and more focused on miko's struggles with the ghosts. her choking out yuria was so unnecessary like girl there was a much better way to go about that but what the hell, sure.

i love the side stories of her helping the ghosts and her finding out that they arent all evil. more please!!

An unexpected rival has appeared!

Miko is still dealing with ghosts the best way she can. As those of you who have read the first volume of the series I am sure you are aware of her astonishing ability to not let the grotesque undead spirits that surround her even know she can see them and thus make them (generally) lose interest in her fast. However when your best friend puts out an aura that drives hosts to her like moths to a flame then there is only so much ignoring you can do so Miko is also quite skilled in the art of covertly warning those around her without letting the ghosts or her targets from knowing why.

As for the so called rival poor Miko doesn't even realize the new girl Yuria, who realizes she can see ghost too, is responsible for the departure of the Godmother and decides she can do as good if not better then Miko...when it rains it pours sometimes. Little does little Yuria realize (literally little, she's like a legal loli in this story) that her ability to see ghosts only allows her to see low ranking and less grotesque shades compared to Miko's unfortunate crystal clarity of the worse of the worse so her perceptions of what happens to these lesser ghosts are filtered by her beliefs in Miko making her all the more formidable a rival.

Like the last volume this one alternates a bit with short stories but I have a feeling that Miko's ability to see the dead is not just a factor of having a constantly charged ghost magnet friend but rather something bigger yet to come. After all she has a little help with some of the potentially more dangerous spirits in this book so far after visiting a shrine though I worry about what price Miko will have to pay if the grand spirit (or possibly god) come to collect for services rendered. I won't mention any details on the stories so you can experience the chills and happy moments for yourself. I just hope you are not to scared to see the scary finale of this volume as an old face comes back into the story and then we are treated to some nice short stories before getting a little more creepy art.

One thing I can say I am glad about is in the first volume they had the translation notes early on in the volume which threw me off since normally something like that would be reserved for the end of the book and although this one did not have translation notes (that I recall) I would rather they be missing then part way through the story (especially when it happened in the introductory volume of the series.) If you decide to dive into this volume I wish you the best of luck when sleeping so you do not remember the nightmares created so flawlessly in this series. :)

Miko’s problems haven’t gone away - when you can see spirits and demons there really isn’t much by way of ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Still with new... friends... and close encounters getting ever closer, is there any hope for our hapless heroine?

First volume of this book started off with a lot of cheesecake and some dead stuff and grotesques and not much else, then got good at the end. I am happy to say that this volume solidifies the series as an okay read, trending towards good. It really finds its footing here.

Partly that’s because of the addition of the extremely goofy Yukia, who isn’t in Miko and Hana’s class but sure knows who Miko is. They share a similar power, but with a key difference that makes her a lot of fun (she also allows for a welcome cameo by the uppity fortune teller from the first volume).

Yukia sees the same things as Miko, but only the “lesser spirits”. The truly horrific stuff, once more the artist is clearly having the time of their life with this, is still only visible to Miko. The juxtaposition of Hana, who can’t see anything, Yukia’s half-sight, and Miko’s full-sight, is a great concept. It really comes to the fore in the tunnel story.

Hana and Miko have a really great friendship and I love them on their own palling around by themselves as well. Without the rampant male gaze that lead the first volume there’s nothing terribly objectionable here either. It feels like the author got a lot more confidence in the story they were telling.

And, hey, it shows. There is an early section at a shrine that leads into an absolutely fascinating bit of story that I am very keen to see play out. It features one word, uttered with the force of a bomb (“Thrice”), and when it comes back into the story later it pays off in a way most stories couldn’t do nearly as well, while also setting up an intriguing plot point for later.

While we don’t get an amazing twist chapter like the first instalment, you don’t really need it here because everything is working a step above the first book. One moment featuring their teacher, however, goes down far, far differently than expected and it shows that this series can definitely land an emotional moment when it wants (this is so different from its usual style that I especially loved it).

I dinged A Witch’s Love, etc, this week for being too expectant on the reader to remember prior volumes. This has the same problem, but in this instance I think revisiting the latter half of the first Mieruko-chan is worth it because the story is better and the repeated callbacks are important (the ending lands harder and the mystery of that line of dead people next to the fast food place gets some suggestive hints).

3.5 stars, rounded down because I want the third volume to be this good before I start rounding up. This is really tight though; in volume 1, the last story saved the entire book. This one tones done the raunchiness in favour of straight up horror/comedy and is a solid read the whole way through. It has a real foundation to build from now and I’m glad I stayed with it.

This series keeps hanging just on the verge of being really good, but it won't let go of the one gag it repeats over and over again: the girl who can see gross and terrifying demons, spirits, and ghosts pretends she doesn't. Fortunately there is a smidge of forward motion with an intriguing visit to a shrine that has some extended consequences, and there is another touching ghost story. Here's hoping the next volume I have on hand finds more of that traction instead of letting the tires keep on spinning in the mire.

I thought this was great. Now that all the main characters are introduced, the plot itself started to fly by and we even got updates on some side stuff. It wasn't too fast or too slow, it was just right and just spoopy enough to keep me on my toes.

This volume continues the overall chapter structure of the “ghost / spirit of the week”, but we learn more about the main characters, and a new character is introduced. There’s a rough story arc involving experimenting with different approaches to dispelling the spirits, and the beginning of a larger storyline involving some divine (?) assistance.

The monsters / ghosts continue to be truly horrifying, with a sense of threat and menace that just drips off the page. A lot of this volume still feels like introduction and setup, but it’s hard to put down regardless, and seems to be ramping up toward the end. Here’s hoping it continues to improve!

So glad to be back in this manga. It's silly and disturbing and that is my favorite combination. The horror is so good but then you are also laughing at the ridiculous moments the characters are going through and what they are saying. Yuria is a great addition to add on to the humor and chaos. Any scene with her I couldn't help but laugh. This also builds on more people being able to see the entities and new possibly good spirits that are fighting the bad ones. I love it. I have so many questions. Really loving this manga.

Overall, an enjoyable volume, though I think the main characters are still forming and not a whole lot new actually happens.
The art continues to be stellar, with the notable exception of the ridiculous way the large-breasted friend is drawn. Think American-style comics where the costumes and anatomy of the female character ignore all realistic considerations. I will admit that this is a pet peeve of mine, but I do think it’s a valid criticism.
My favorite character is the tattooed guy with the sad backstory and the affinity for cats.

Carina Yukia, scemotta e dolce.
Sono curiosa di sapere chi sono le due gatte sacerdotesse e come aiuteranno (lo faranno?) Miko.

Per adesso il pelato amante dei gatti, per quanto si veda, è il personaggio che più mi ha toccato il cuore.

The second volume, thankfully much less fanservice-y than the first, still continues in much the same vein of Meiruko trying her best to ignore the ghosts. There isn't a lot by means of character or plot development, though things seem to be heading to newer places and so I'm still looking forward to volume 3!

The shrine visit chapter and the old lady chapter were the only two that I liked. Everything else was more of the same, except a new character was introduced to add in a new schtick to mix. So yeah, I'm dropping this series, I'm sure others will like it fine, but I'm not interested in reading more.

Finally! After a book and a half, the plot is finally developing! I'm glad Mieruko isn't schizophrenic (as that was my first thought), but having the ability to see ghosts and monsters? I'd love to see my sisters and nana in more than just my dreams, but Mieruko is a manga with a darker concept, if only in my opinion. Hana is a side character whom I feel to be oblivious due to not knowing something is going on with her best friend, Mieruko. If my bestie was upset, I'd know. I may talk a lot and was cursed with terrible eyesight, but I listen to others and see their mannerisms change even if only a little bit, but Hana here lacks that ability, which is sad. I don't think Hana is a bad person; I just think she's unaware of no true fault of her own. The plot truly develops with the introduction of Yuria, the high schooler too short to be thought a high school student. I appreciate Yuria as a stubborn paranormal-obsessed teenager, as I was that way at one time, too. I'd like to see Yuria realize there's a lot more to learn about being a sight-given exorcist, or however this series calls it; but one thing I hope to see in the future novels is Mieruko opening up to Hana and Yuria about her problems. Friends don't let friends do stuff alone. If my best friend was haunted by ghosts, I'd be studying up on all the ways I could help her and kick paranormal stuff in the backside immediately. The lack of character development for Mieruko bothers me, but I liked seeing her listen to the ghosts and help them. Not all ghosts are good, and not all creatures who appear monstrous are bad, but Mieruko is far more powerful than she realizes, and her lack of learning how to help, alter, protect, and more is bothering me. Will I read the rest of this series? Yes. Do I like the artwork style? Yes and no. Am I reminded of The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan? Heck to the yes! Just, you know, set in Japan and in the POV of a teenage girl who's slow to develop as a character. Other than that, this series really is interesting!

For this second Volume, I hoped to see Miko finally admit that she could see the spirits, but I'm not sure she ever will! This Volume definitely expanded the world, some but also showed a possibility for a villain... not really sure where this is going to go.
Highlights:
- Hana saves a dog from a cursed house, completely oblivious to the nasty spirit following her around, that eats other smaller spirits
-Miko takes Hana to a temple, to help ward off the spirit following her. It kind of works, but before the spirit fades away it touches Miko and says "Three Days"
- Onto the scene comes Julia, who can also see spirits. But when she confronts Miko at school about it, we discover that she can only see smaller and weaker spirits. Julia takes Miko's ignoring as a threat.
- Miko comes across an old woman who needs help home. When the spirit of her dead husband communicates a safe combination, the old woman is able to get a comb that he bought for her, which puts him at peace.
(LOL Miko is the shy girl, Hana is the fan service girl and Julia is the tsundere type)
- Julia wants to exploit Hana's love for photography and force Miko to admit her ability, but rather than admit it, she keeps "showing off", making Julia assume things.
- Miko and her brother Kyousuke go shopping for their mom's birthday, and a spirit on the train with an axe causes fear to rise in Miko, but she ignores it, yet again.
- Miko and Hana's teacher is leaving on maternity leave, but Miko sees a spirit interacting with the baby. Turns out it is the spirit of her previous child, who she lost before birth. (This was so sweet and left the Volume on a high note!)
- But why does their new sub have a particularly dark spirit attached to him?

Overall, still following the same premise, which keeps me reading. Recommend. A fun manga that puts a spin on some familiar tropes.

OMG this is soooooo creepy, and also VERY good!

Mieruko meets a girl who can also see (some) of the Graboids. The girl fancies herself a powerful exorcist. NOT! So yeah. Hana Big-Boobs seems to really draw the Graboids to her and Mieruko. I'm also thinking something odd is going on with Mieruko's younger brother, Kyousuke. Possibly some kind of perverse crush(?) On his sister? Also, the evil cat man from the park, the one with the red hair, Zen Toono, he appears again, and is going to be a reoccurring character, at least for awhile. The scary-looking yet VERY kind cat man, the bald one with the scars and ink, he also makes another appearance, and I suspect that he too, will be a reoccurring character. I have a sneaking suspicion he will be an ally of sorts to Mieruko, likely in regards to the evil cat man. I really am enjoying this series. I usually steer clear of horror, as I have severe PTSD and traumatic reoccurring nightmares, but this manga isn't triggering me. I'm really loving it. So frikkin creepy, yet also some very funny moments. This is a rather unusual story, and if you like a bit of the macabre, I highly recommend this.

Content warnings: Ghosts, body horror, disturbing imagery

It took so much of my self-control to not immediately inhale this as soon as it hit my phone. Continuing with the excellent ghost designs, this volume introduces new characters and new lore (?), while still keeping up the slice-of-life pacing.

I winced at every new ghost introduced here. They are larger, more intricate, but I really liked how Izumi introduces softer moments where maybe the ghosts aren’t all bad. In fact, helping them find closure Sixth Sense style might be a way for Miko to find peace with her new horrifying ghouls.

One of my favorite archetypes is the character who declares themself to be someone’s apprentice. Here comes Yuria, a fledging medium who wants to know why the old woman closed up her shop and what exactly is up with Miko seeing ghosts beyond ever her comprehension. I can’t wait to see how this relationship evolves, especially since Miko tries to maintain that she cannot see anything going on around her.

i’m kinda conflicted with this series so far. On one hand, the ghosts are pretty well designed and are always pretty unique for the most part, and the art is great. However, the repeated scenarios of ‘i can’t look away or close my eyes (for whatever reason) and have to watch scary ghosts come close to me’ gets kinda boring pretty quick imo. Like, Mieruko, you know they can’t hurt you or your friends. Just close your eyes and walk away. The ones following her i can get, but half the time they don’t.
Also the new character introduced who can see weaker ghosts just came off as really annoying to me, idk. And I don’t get why Mieruko can’t just tell her ‘hey i can see ghosts too, but i see more scary ones as well that you can’t’.
Gets a little frustrating, but at least the yakuza guy with the cat has a few pages at the end of the volume. Overall, a little tired of the concept already, but i bought the first 6 volumes like a dumbass so i guess i’ll see where this goes.
