Book Four Mack is back, alongside trusty cohort Manny the marshal and dubious associate Marcus the underworld boss.
Grady Huff, a wealthy and insufferable pain in the neck, killed his cleaning lady and confessed to the crime. No jury in the world could find him innocent and no amount of money can convince Mackenzie August to work for his defense. That is, until Veronica Summer's fiancé arrives in Roanoke and joins the prosecution...
Darren Robbins has more on his mind than just convicting Grady--he's come to collect Veronica. And he's come to settle things with Mackenzie, a reckoning that will certainly spill violence into the streets.
Book Five Mackenzie August is a married man, a fact he's stunned to learn about himself. Matrimonial bliss will have to wait, however, as danger comes knocking. Arch nemesis Darren Robbins submerges Mack into the dangerous underworld of the Camorra in Naples, Italy, as retribution for his many sins against the District Kings. If he ever wants to get back to his son and new bride, Mack will have to fight his way out...
Book Six Mackenzie August returns from Italy, battered, bruised, and unbroken. Also married. Mostly.
A new client waits for him--Ulysses Steinbeck, a man who's lost his dog and wants it back. What makes this case so compelling for Mackenzie? Two things. 1) Steinbeck has anterograde amnesia and can't remember owning the dog; in fact, he hates them. 2) The dog holds the key to a fortune.
This series has just gone beyond my ability to endure the constant bombardment of obscure words, bad guys, and prostitution. All in all these have kind of morphed into a weird Pulp Fiction. Comparing the movie may be a bit of a stretch to some but the characters in that movie displayed a certain naïveté believing that the way they lived their lives was normal as do the characters in these books. It is difficult to write a review when reading a trilogy but let me just say that all three suffered because I absolutely hated the 2nd book in this installment. Kidnapping Mack and forcing him to fight as if he were a gladiator of Ancient Rome (i.e. slaves) just turned my stomach and I felt the premise did not fit in with this series. Not even a little bit. I really liked the books featuring Tyler but this character is just too weird and his relationship with Ronnie is too weird and he should have killed the bad guy already.
These books are just excellent with such vivid characters, crisp and very funny dialogue and complex stories. I’m re-reading them as I happened on Book 11 and couldn’t remember if I had read Books 7-10. Having said this, were you on drugs or time traveled back to your early teens when you wrote Book 5 ?? This book goes way beyond “suspension of disbelief”. I know there is evil in this world but this premise was truly over the top. What were you thinking? Hopefully you will be more grounded with the next set of books.
Great continuation from the First Collection, although my favorite book in this collection is definitely the second book, "All the Details." Mack fights for his life in Naples, Italy. Since there are successive books in this series, he obviously wins. I do recommend that you read the books in order so that you can keep up with the overarching plot line. Enjoy!
I am absolutely IN LOVE with this author and his writing. I don’t know the last time I not only couldn’t put my I pad down, stop laughing, improved my vocabulary, and felt such a part of the story. This is a MUST READ!!!!!!! And tell all your friends and family. I have, and they are experiencing the same reaction. By the way, the end of book six is FABULOUS !!!!!!!!!! Pammie Cape Coral, FL
The books in this series are an excellent read and very hard to put down. They are humorous and well thought out. A word of warning, keep a dictionary handy, the author has an impressive vocabulary
I've read them all. One after another. Haven't put my phone down other than charging it ! The series is totally addictive, funny, poignant, and I learned a lot of new words! (Mack uses vocabulary as weapons.)
You'll LOVE him, his baby, his girlfriend, his roommate.
Please save Ronnie and WRITE MORE! Loved the whole series and it started with one free book called the Last Teacher. Now what will I do the rest of the day?
