Death. Betrayal. Destruction. This was Alaya's destiny, written in the stars on the night she was born. She should have been killed because of it.
She wasn’t.
The once crown prince of the highest throne in Sundolia is now the high king, and all of his advisors agree on one thing: He should have destroyed that dangerous Dragon woman when he had the chance.
He didn’t.
Now war spreads like a wildfire from the southern kingdom. The empire is burning. The day of prophecy is arriving. Alaya still lives, her power more dangerous and unpredictable than ever.

As a kid, S.M. Gaither spent way too much time playing video games like Final Fantasy and reading every book she could get her hands on instead of doing silly things like her assigned homework. As an adult…Well, not much has changed. Her goal is to write books that distract others from their life’s obligations, too, thus creating an army of fellow procrastinators over which she can reign supreme. These days, her personal favorite places to procrastinate are in the mountains near her North Carolina home, in the company of her husband, their daughter, and their very spoiled dog.
4.5 I think it was the best book of this series. Really enjoyed the journey, the story, the plot , mad the writing style. The best scene was the one with the Battle field. Nice description and narration.I was touched by it. This book build the characters some more. I am sorry though, that this series, at least with those protagonists ended. Maybe a novella or even another addition to this saga will satisfy my need to know the next episodes of their life. It was really optimistic and in a period of my life that I really needed. Well done! I also appreciate that it didn't had ups and downs or sadden changes, sturdy and nice. For those who will pick it up, do know that has graphic touches to it's pages. Good thinking for us book nerds. Last but not least, I was kinda disappointed about the cover. I expected the red theme to continue, though and this one is also finely made. I like that illustrator. The cover shows the power couple that they were. Good job! * * * * * * I received an ARC of this guy's but u already know that my thoughts are from my heart. ✋
What a great finish to a thrilling and engaging series! Now, to write a review without spoiling anything... here goes ;-)
Worldbuilding was great, as I'm starting to expect from the author, the environments and scenes were really well written and very clear without going into too many details. Which is nice, since it gives your mind some leeway to imagine things as it wants to.
Character development was good. Emrys and Alaya don't have it easy, seriously... not only do they seem on opposite sides (or... not?), they still have to face all the lies and mistrust between them, never mind the growing feelings they have towards each other. It felt good to have things come to a conclusion between them, even with all the twists and turns.
Pacing and flow were really good. The book can be seen as the waves of an unruly ocean: they grab you, pull you under, sometimes let you up for a breath of air before pulling you back deep down. Which, believe you me, is a good thing ;-) Well, okay, maybe not as good for my sleep or the day after *shrugs*
The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all I'm really happy how this series turned out! Would surely recommend! And the best part is... this wasn't the last time we've heard about this amazing world, nope, more stories/books are inbound (yay)!
A magical ending for this trilogy! I've been reading kind of slowly, because I didn't want it to be over... I was thrilled to read that the author plans on returning to this universe, although it will focus on new characters. Sign me up!
I thought a lot of times that Alaya reminded me of Ailin in the Throne of Glass series, and that's high credentials. I've been putting the last book in that series on hold, since I'm having problems with it being the end of THAT world...
If you enjoy epic fantasy, great world building, and characters that develop and grow during the books - give the Serpents and Kings trilogy a shot. You'll not regret it!
* I received an ARC from the author and I'm happy to give my honest review. *
"The Empire of Empty Wars" è il volume conclusivo della trilogia "The Serpents and Kings" di S.M.
Riveting, with a great ending. The only thing that kept it from that highest star is that the H and h spent the vast majority of the book separated and fighting each other rather than working together. That is definitely a personal thing that may not bother others, though.
I truly enjoyed this series and read all three one after another. The story, tension and characters get better with every page and there are unexpected twists as well. I loved the ending and look forward to reading more from this terrific author!
This was the best book of the series and what a satisfying conclusion to this wonderful series! I am sad to leave these characters behind but glad that the Song of the Marked series will continue in the same world! Definitely my favorite read of November and really enjoyed this last book, I couldn't put it down.
If you are thinking of picking up this series I definitely recommend it! This is the second series I have read and loved by S.M. Gaither and looking forward to reading more of their work! I will miss Emrys and Alaya so much but so glad I can revisit them anytime I want <3
This book is a good read to do in between major emotional damaging books ⭐️ ⭐️ .75. Decent little adventure that pulls you in, but not super immersive.
As of November 2024, this book is ONLY available via audiobook. It is likely the ebook is being revamped much like the other two previous books have been.

I had never read this author's works before, but through the first book in this series, SM Gaither captured my heart and now that this third book gets us to the much awaited ending I am really glad to have discovered it. This grimdark, sword and sorcery, epic fantasy series has all one could ever wish for in such a genre, battles are fought through magic and armaments, our group of young heroes are courageous and loyal to one another, even though at times they are twisted by those who wish to bring evil into Sundolia and then there is Rue, one hell of an amazing dragon. Alaya knows she can rely on Rue and also on Sade, her friend from her past in the small village of Vanish, this is a friend who is able, reliable and who always watched her back. Then there was Sylven the serpent-kind whose ambition and lust for power make him turn against one of his own kind and will go to any length to reach his aim. Alaya though steadfast in her dream of bringing peace to a united Kingdom suffers a lot at the hands of Sylven and the Sun King, but finds aid and friends where she least expects to find them. The romance between her and Emrys though utterly extraordinary, is the force behind their fight for a united Kingdom under Emrys, the new and young High King and Queen Alaya, a rook and a serpent. Love can really conquer all and bring hope to those enjoying the benefits of this union. I cannot emphasise enough the enjoyment I got from reading the powerful ending to what has been a series full of very great world building down to the minute details of clans and casts and even their own Gods and Goddesses which went into making this such a captivating series.
The third book in this series concludes with a BANG! Although there was a decent amount of unnecessary “running and hiding” by Alaya, I really loved how this series ended! There were some pretty awesome battle sequences during the “running and hiding” which made it worth it, but I would’ve preferred more plot progression, specifically in Alaya’s power struggles and finding control. With that being said, I really liked this series! This book ended really well and I will always love Emrys! He and Alaya have such a great relationship and I loved watching it grow. Even through the secrets and betrayals they still had a strong foundation and trust in one another that I thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciated the pace of this book, and all of them, as they moved through the story really well without dragging out certain elements to just make the book longer or add unnecessary drama. My biggest upset with this series was Rue’s inability to spit fire! She could’ve been way more useful in battle if she been able to command fire like is a stereotypical dragon trait. BUT, she was pretty awesome when she would snap people with her teeth and whip them with her tail. She was a great addition in the last book! The magic and culture was awesome and very clever. I loved all the different powers and how they could be used. I would love more books placed in this world in the different clans and powers. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip into this world!
Such an amazing series. Every step of the way the world is woven in amazing clarity. Piece by piece everything laid out, you are constantly in awe by the intrigues that are laid out. I am not sure about you but usually within the first couple of pages I have the whole book planned out in my head as to how it will go and I find that I am constantly surprised by this book even though you would think that I would have grown accustomed to it by now. Ok and on to this particular book. The book like the others were well written. It starts with the Alaya being tortured and Emrys and Sade are trying to find her. She escapes and you would think that everything would go up hill and it would be a happy reunion and they would conquer all of their enemies and live happily ever after. When does anything in this series happen that easily and neatly. When they are reunited, he says I love you, she stabs him for example. Ok so there is more to it than that. But what a teaser right? Truly though, I love them together. I love their story. About as much as I hate Sylven. The ending I found very fitting and satisfying. Anybody else think that Lady Isoni wasn't going to see the end for some reason though? Glad that this is not the end of the universe though and look forward to seeing it spin into a new story.
I had seriously high expectations going into this one, and it did not disappoint. The opening was dark, as expected based on the abrupt ending to part 2. I liked how this book revisited characters and themes from earlier and in some places brought closure, in others brought new light and perspective.
This is the final war between two parties and there are no easy decisions. The conflict was expressed on all levels from personal decisions, to parties within a side making decisions, to the larger battle affecting them all. I would have liked to see a little more conclusion to the story - there was nothing to be seen after the battle but dark, and a possible reason for that was given, but was there sight after the battle?
It was a long book, but the pacing was good. There were parts where I could hardly flip the virtual page fast enough and parts I slowed down to savor. It was a satisfying conclusion to the series and had all the elements I was looking for and all my favorite characters played important roles.
This is the conclusion of a trilogy that starts strong and builds to an epic conclusion. Start from the beginning and enjoy!
This book picks up where book two left off. Alaya is back in the Sun Kingdom, and Emrys is picking up the pieces after the assassination of his father.
It's a wild ride from start to finish. Alaya betrayed, Emrys desperately searching for her, and the wonderful Sade (honestly my favorite character) keeping a level head through it all.
War is looming as Alaya struggles to put herself back together and wrest herself from Sylven's control, and it's an amazing character arc for her. The development is spot on. From doubting herself and her own mind to becoming strong enough to overcome any obstacles in her way.
Emrys is struggling with bringing his kingdom under control, while trying to bring Alaya home to him. He sees remarkable development as well, going from a sarcastic preening nobleman to a wise and just king with just a hint of that sarcasm in there.
All in all, it's a great read and a wonderful conclusion to this trilogy.
Because peace, she had decided, was not so much a destination to reach or a thing to be obtained, but a thing to be planted. Watered. Protected. Maintained.
Such a beautiful ending! I think this was the perfect ending to this journey. There were a lot of moments were I feared the worst, but overall it worked out the way it was supposed to and I cannot say I am unhappy at all. Alaya and Emrys have both grown so much during their travels together... I love them together, despite their adherence to secrets. I think it is understandable considering everything they have both gone through. I wish there was a follow-up scene between Alaya and Ma. I also wouldn't mind learning more about Lady Korva. I surprisingly liked her, although I was concerned when we first met her that she was just going to be a point of tension between Alaya and Emrys but that was not the case. I wouldn't mind reading a book about her! And more of Sade!
(Spoiler free) I’m not sure if the author reads these, but if she does, hi. Me again. I read the whole series in basically a weekend, so think of this as a series review instead of a single book review. I’m hungover from Song of the Marked and wanted to stay in Cas and Elander’s world, so here I am. I loved following the story of Emrys and Alaya through these books. While I definitely wanted to strangle them both (and incinerate Sylven to ashes) at times, and the start was a bit slow, I genuinely love them both. Bi panic for half the book, couldn’t figure out who to dump for xD Thank you for gifting us with Alaya’s heart and Emrys’s honor, and for letting us meet them. I loved this series C:
Ok, so I really liked this series overall, despite its flaws. It’s a 3.5 for the final book but I’m choosing to round down. I love that this series gives more context to her other series that I loved.
Things I didn’t love: - We’re just supposed to be ok with the fact that Emrys stole that power with zero consequences? Him saying he doesn’t want to be like his dad but then kind of being like his dad is a good enough excuse? I don’t love that we just forgive him because he used the power to save Alaya… - Also, the ending was abrupt. I wanted a little bit more. And the epilogue was not enough.
Ok that’s all for complaints. I liked this one the least out of the trilogy but I still enjoyed it and think it’s worth reading especially before reading her other series set in this world.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a print copy of this book from the author to review. This in no was affects my opinions or rating.
The epic conclusion we were all waiting for! I really liked that Alaya was always humanized and had limits. She couldn’t always do the rescuing, sometimes she needed her allies! The battle scenes were entertaining and not overly-detailed to the point of being boring. The humor and sarcasm was highly enjoyable and the twist at the beginning was very exciting and well-written, hints and foreshadowing building the tension and anxiety until the big moment. I did spot a few typos and grammatical errors, but other than that, this was an extremely satisfying end to this epic series!
I was happy that the last book in the trilogy not only lived up to the previous books, but also provided a good ending to the series as a whole. There were still some aspects of the story that I would have like to have been further explored, but overall I can’t fault the book. The characters remained individuals who developed, grew into themselves, and generally stayed true to who they were throughout the series. The pace was consistent to the last two books and allowed for a timely conclusion that was satisfactory yet wistful, though ultimately allows readers to feel content that the story is now complete.
Not one but two outstanding FC in this trilogy. I love Alaya and I seriously had moments of anger and heartbreaking sadness for her during the read. Sage is probably my favorite character even though she's not the main protagonist.
Beautiful world, action packed fights and battles with swords and magic, and a love story because of course there has to be a love story!
Betrayal, forgiveness, loss, and finding that HEA are all packed into this story. It's not for the faint of heart, battle scenes are very descriptive. I was ready to scream during parts of the story and wanted to cry during other parts.
This book concludes the series with characters showing change and growth, along with relationships being mended. It's packed with action and adventure, and of course romance.
Strength in the face of dire circumstances. Change the course of the empire. Face the end together. Past resolved. Power restored and stabilized. Secure the future.
Endurance...Betrayal...
Kingdoms in peril. Endless cycle to be broken. Unlikely allies. Change isn't always bad. Sometimes it leads to something better.
"Death is not always such a bad thing. Death means change." "My dragon. My queen."
I wanted to like this series and I *did* like this series. The lore is rich. The writing is fluffed up. The main ship is compelling enough and the twists did keep me guessing. But by this third book I had just grown bored of it. I couldn't even tell you why. Perhaps the world was too heavy or the romance itself wasnt focused enough. It was advertised to me as a romance book and it was not that so perhaps it is just my own disappointment. Still giving it 4 stars because it is good for what it is and I respect this author's vision.
You can now find me permanently staring at the ceiling and screaming in both delight (that this series was so spectacularly good) and in frustration (because it’s over). I have been swallowed by a book hangover and I am not going to be ready to leave my headspace for a good month.
This conclusion was everything you could possibly want out of this series. It delivered on every single emotion and every single promise made from the first moment we met Alaya and her friends. The Dragon and the Rook.
Once again SM Gaither has created a multilayered world with complex characters set against impossible odds. I love the FMC in this book Alaya, she is strong, independent, and trying to do her best for her world. Emrys, the MMC is a perfect counterpoint to her . . . And his pet name for her gets me EVERY TIME! There is wonderful found family in this story. It is emotional and gripping. I listened to the audio and as always Jesse Vilinsky knocked it out of the park!
Highlights: ✨Forbidden Love ✨Enemies to Lovers ✨Magical Creatures ✨Unique Magic System ✨Multilayered and Descriptive World Building
A fantastic read, This series grabs you right from the beginning and keeps you inthralled from start to finish. And is fast paced and action packed this is an epic read that the scenes are written so well that you can picture them in your minds eye. It had me on the edge of my seat. There are twists and turns everywhere. This is a real page Turner. If I could give it more Than five stars I would. I definitely recommend. Shauna Joesten
Wow!!! What a ride this final book in the series was! Non-stop action right from page one, mindblowing twists and turns, nail-biting suspense and a tight-knit plot that kept me glued to my e-reader till the last word. S.M. Gaither has created an amazing, unique and complex fantasy world, unlike any I've encountered in my reading so far. If you haven't read this series yet, do yourself a favor: grab all the books and binge read them!
This was Awesome ..Revenge is sweet.. The final book in this saga did not disappoint . Thank You So Much for Allowing me to be An Honest ARC reviewer. I rarely give out 5 star ratings but you've earned it . the battles big and small, The Dragon, Assorted kinds of Magic..All lead up to an Awesome War ,and revenge is sweet. The Dragon Queen ,And Rook King were they ever going to be together or would the puppet master win. No i won't give away anything.
An epic conclusion to another amazing series by SM Gaither. Alaya was such a strong, likable character, it’s so hard to say goodbye. This is one of those series that starts out great but gets even better with each book. In this book, Alaya has the help of Emerys, Rue and others by her side to defeat the evil they were facing. If you enjoy forbidden love, fantasy and conflict this is the series for you! I received and ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this series so much, mostly because of the unique mythology behind the different clans. I had never read this author’s work prior to the first book and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it because this has been such a fun series to read. All of the battles and characters were really well done. I look forward to reading more in this world and checking out other series the author plans to release!
