Where Were the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

Rate this book
Explore the most amazing wonders of the ancient world!

More than 2,000 years ago, travelers wrote about the incredible sights they saw while on their journeys. They told tales of hanging gardens that were built for a Babylonian queen, and a colossal statue that guided ships through the harbor of Rhodes in Greece. These writers compiled a list of the very best of these sights that are now known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Author Yona Zeldis McDonough takes the readers on a trip to the Great Pyramids in Egypt (the only Wonder still standing), the Statue of Zeus at Olympia in ancient Greece, and the other spectacles, detailing the creativity and skill that these early civilizations possessed.

Unusual and impressive sights from ancient times that still impress, even though only one remains standing today. Before reading this book, I could only name two of the seven wonders, but now I know about all of the wonders, why they were built, and why they no longer exist. It is astonishing to consider how these marvelous landmarks were constructed to such a large size and scope without the modern technological advances we have today. This makes a good tie-in to discussions on the architecture, size, and building of structures today as well as the significance of landmarks from a cultural, historical, and physical context.

I avoid these big head books because the front covers repel me. However, I found this one fascinating. The maps, timelines, and pictures all helped the story. It was laid out clearly and I learned so much. I'm not sure I realized the Hanging Gardens of Babylon may be a myth. It had a great balance of ancient history balanced with comparisons to modern sizes or monetary amounts making it easy to understand. It also includes a list of the 7 modern wonders of the world and natural wonders. I definitely recommend this one.

Great overview of the Seven Wonders. Interesting that only one remains. I like how they told how we know about them now if they don't exist and some were on coins and some were in mosaics in other places, and some were written about. I liked the chapter on the new 2000's list of the seven wonders.

This was really cool, and I'm a little ashamed that I only knew two of the seven wonders before I read this.

I was so fascinated by these stories that, after finishing this, I went down quite a rabbit hole researching this subject!

These books are really neat but I wish they had different illustrations--not just black and white drawings. I know most of the places in this book no longer stand, but in the other books photos would even be nice.

I love reading young readers books about subjects I'm interested in because they explain things in an interesting way and you learn what you wanted to when you picked up the book. Lots of interesting info in this book. This book is probably best suited for school age readers.

I appreciated the clarification of the Colossus of Rhodes probably NOT straddling a harbor because that would’ve been impractical.
