3.5 Stars.

Megan has always been the level headed, responsible one in the family. Her Sister Tracey has always been the impulsive and party loving one. Both sisters reacted to their father's death in her own way. Megan decided to put her college education on hold to continue running her father's business, while Tracey followed her heart and left for Philadelphia to live with her boyfriend. Both have a lot of change and growing to do and the reader watches (reads) as they do so. One becomes a Mother while the other adopts a pet and finds happiness in the process.

I really enjoy Bette Lee Crosby books because they focus on relationships - Parent/child relationships, sibling relationships, romantic relationships, extended family relationships, relationships with pets, relationships with those in the community, etc. Her books have characters dealing with real issues such as death, loss of a pet, adopting a pet, having a baby, falling in love, falling out of love, the consequences of choices, and the stumbling blocks one faces while chasing his/her dreams.

Bette Lee Crosby's books are also not graphic in nature. You won’t be reading a lot of "vulgar" language or be reading graphic sex scenes. Fans of Debbie Macomber should really enjoy Crosby's books as well.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing, NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Summer of New Beginnings is a marvelous women's contemporary fiction. It tells the story of the Briggs family, notably of Meghan, and how they try to deal with several problems after her father died. One of the reasons why I've requested for a reading copy of this novel is because of the dog, "Sox" , in the story. Although the dog was not immensely mentioned because the story centers on Meghan, dog lovers such as I will be deeply moved by how huge the part of our furry friends plays on helping us through our ordeals.

If you are looking for a light read and a little motivational story, try to check out this astounding novel of Bette Lee Crosby. It is also a great summer-read or even a weekend-read that will also make you reflect on whether you're still living in the past and needs to move on.

I can never ever fault this authors work in 100% bringing out emotions in me that I actually “feel” for real long after I close the book.
It soon became apparent to me that I was going to be drawn right in, I was right. I read a lot of psychological thrillers/thrillers and some of those reads have kept me from putting the book down but for different reasons to this one.

I felt I couldn’t close the book on these all too real people, George who had such a brief journey in this story but impacted greatly and was always there in spirit.

Lila, Mother to Megan and Tracy.

Tracy is what you’d call the noisy one of sisters, the independent won’t listen to reason child.
She goes her own way. Her experience of love and loss was something no mother would want her daughter to experience but hey, sometimes it’s how we learn. Tracy learnt. And she learnt to value her family more.

Megan was the quiet stronger sister. Calm and less hot headed.

When her father died she took over the small business and felt closer to him for doing that.

There’s a gorgeous little dog mentioned who plays a huge part in this story. A dog Megan rescues. But who does he belong to?
The bond between Megan and Sox the dog was amazing to see grow.

Tracy returned to the nest with a child.
The way the sisters communicated about a problem with the little boy was dealt with in such a realistic human family way that could happen in any of our families.

That’s what I love about Bette Lee Crosby’s books.
It could be any one of us.
It could be someone you know.
Every day people from every day lives.
Family drama at its best.

Yes there’s some romance in here that was so cleverly interwoven that it was a delight to read.

Personally I don’t like the sort of “romance” that is in today’s kind of reads.
Old fashioned, yes I maybe.
And I neither like the “soppy mills and boon” stories of years ago.
Yes I’m realistic and that’s how I love to read love stories in books.
This author has my personal balance right and that’s why I look forward to her next releases.

The Vet Tom.
Gabriel.
Dom.

All these play an important part.

All these characters have become a family and an extension of family or real people to me.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I really can’t.

If you love family drama with emotive issues, with rollercoaster rides, with tears of not just sadness but happiness, if you love reading trials and tribulations that can occur within any family, then this is the read for you.

I love how Bette Lee Crosby's writing is composed, the sentences are beautifully structured and the story reads smoothly. It creates a soft, beautiful picture making us believe that everything that is good in the world is possible and you've only got to reach for it with faith in your heart, in hope those beautiful things would come into your life and stay with you and your loved ones. Also it makes you realise even more that our loved ones never go away and stay with us wherever we are, always and forever. 💕

"In an odd way - a way she couldn't quite put a name to - that evening also seemed magical, and it would remain in Meghan's heart for a long time."

The unexpected passing of George Briggs, husband to Lila and father to sisters Meghan and Tracy started a chain of events which altered the course of their lives considerably. Meghan's love of words had set her on a course for university and a degree in journalism. But with her father's passing, Meghan's direction changed as she took the reins of her father's business.

Tracy on the other hand stepped up her rebellion, and without her husband's influence, Lila found herself unable to change the course of Tracy's life. But never once did she turn her daughter away - her love for the two girls in her life would never change. And when Tracy arrived back home to Georgia after a couple of years in Philadelphia she had baby Lucas with her. Lila was in raptures as she took on the role of grandmother.

As Tracy struggled with motherhood, Meghan rescued a stray dog she named Sox. And while Meghan half-heartedly tried to find his owner, everyone fell in love with him, especially Lucas. What would be the outcome for this fractured family that was gradually making its way to the surface? Would life send more heartache to them? Or would this be the start of a new beginning for them all?

The Summer of New Beginnings by Bette Lee Crosby is another heartfelt and emotional tale which I flew through, finishing in a matter of hours. I thoroughly enjoy this author's work, and with this one being the beginning of the Magnolia Grove series, I know I have more to look forward to. The Summer of New Beginnings is one I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read and review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

The Summer of New Beginnings by Bette Lee Crosby has got to be one of the sweetest books I have ever read. There is so much Southern charm in this book, and Crosby takes some very heavy topics and tells them in an impeccably light manner.

The Summer of New Beginnings is the first installment in the Magnolia Grove series, and tells the story of a family that is going through a lot. After their father passes away suddenly, Meghan and her sister Tracy are left making some tough decisions, along with their mother Lila. After a few hurdles along the way, everything finally starts coming together for the family.

I feel in love with the characters in this book and their small town of Magnolia Grove, Georgia. There were a couple of things in the book that felt a little too rushed, but overall the story is just so sweet. I teared up multiple times, so you may want some tissus!

Final Thought: The Summer of New Beginnings read incredibly fast, and I found myself flying through the pages. You pretty much know what everyone's thinking in this book almost all the time, with some first-person chapters that feel like diary entries. I really enjoyed this style of writing, and I haven't actually come across it too often. This was my first time reading Crosby, but I cannot wait to read the next installment of this series!

Bette Lee Crosby never fails to draw me into caring about the families that populate her stories. The Summer of New Beginnings is no exception. I was immediately drawn to Lila Briggs and felt for her when her husband George died. Also with their daughter Meghan, who despite her own dreams puts them on hold to help the family maintain her dad’s business. Unlike Meghan, her sister Tracy uses he father’s absence as a license to pursue her own plans and rebellion. No matter who gets hurt in the process. But when Tracy’s life undergoes a radical change, she is forced to revaluate her options. Along with these three main characters there is also a the very cute stray dog Meghan falls in love with, a new vet and a nasty piece of work who threatens Tracy and the Briggs family.
For me this was a book, I never wanted to put down. I needed to keep reading because I was emotionally involved with this family and shared every moment with them. Not an unusual occurrence with me and Bette Lee Crosby’s books. The first in the Magnolia Grove series, I am now looking forward to book 2. I just might have to throw out a few more hints to my family members about how much I want to read that one.
If you like heart-warming stories about characters that are well developed and real, with problems many can relate to, you will be sure to enjoy this. This story of family, forgiveness and new beginnings. It is peopled with characters you will come to love and remember. An absolute joy to read. My first five star read for 2019 and highly recommended. Do yourself a favour and take a visit to Magnolia Grove and meet the Briggs family. A captivating read.

The Summer of New Beginnings

Bette Lee Crosby

Received from Netgalley

THE SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS is the first book in the Magnolia Grove series. No one writes Southern fiction like Bette Lee Crosby does. She tugs at the reader's heart and never lets them go as they are falling in love with all of her characters. Bette Lee puts her readers on such an emotional roller coaster and pulls them right in to the story. That is exactly what happened as I was reading THE SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS. I have read almost all of this wonderful authors books and still have a few more to go and that makes me very happy.

Magnolia Grove is one of those towns that you want to pack your bags and move to. Bette Lee does such an awesome job of describing the town that you feel as if you have been there and know exactly where she is writing about. THE SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS is such a heartwarming story of family and you find your heart going out to Meghan and Tracy as they deal with the death of their father. Lila, their mother is struggling as well. Tracy is the wild child and lives her life to the beat of her own drum. Meghan is the responsible daughter and tries to keep her father's company afloat after he passes away. It feels like the last thing she has of her dad's and is willing to sacrifice going away to college to keep it going.

THE SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS is a very quick read and I was flipping the pages like a mad woman because I had to know what was going to happen to these women. When Meghan finds a dog swimming for his life in a lake and meets the new vet in town, her life completely changes but she tries to fight it. Will this family ever be able to heal and find happiness? Is their dad, George, guiding them from above? Do yourself a favor and read this beautiful story. You will finish with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. All of the characters are so relatable that you won't be able to stop yourself from cheering for them. I'm so excited to continue with the Magnolia Grove series.

First, I want to say thank you to Bette Lee Crosby and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book. Full disclosure - Bette is a good friend and I have read and reviewed most if not all of her novels. There has not been one that I did not love.

All that being said, The Summer of New Beginnings is another beautifully written novel crafted by this amazing author. Bette has continued to write in the Southern tradition of her previous books, but has added a more dynamic plot line with a few more twists to it. Her characters seem to come alive in the pages and the dog, I love dogs, reminds me of my own best friend! I’m a sucker for books with dogs in them!

Other reviewers will go further into the plot. I simply want to say that this is an amazingly readable book. It’s perfect for reading in front of the fire with the snow falling or on a beach drinking an iced tea! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great, well developed story with characters you will want to know. I’m looking forward to more in this new series.

This is a beautifully penned story, a story of loss, hope, the struggles of life and love, when George Briggs passes away suddenly he leaves behind his wife Lila and two daughters Tracy and Meghan. Tracy is working in a bank and Meghan is just about to go off to college to become a journalist but losing her father changes all of that she decides to stay home and run the business that her father started, this is a story that will have you turning the pages to join this family on their new path in life.

Meghan was always very close to her father, the sensible daughter and Tracy can be a bit of a wild child and losing their father affects them differently, Lila worries that things will be hard for them all. Tracy falls in love with Dominic and goes against her mother’s wishes and moves to another state Meghan supports Tracy saying that she must find her own way in life, this ends in the birth of a little boy and Tracy struggling.

Meghan continues to write in her journals and run the Snip and Save magazine and does well but she does struggle and when she rescues a dog from a swollen lake her life takes on a new meaning Sox as she calls him seems to be a gift, but from who? And this leads her to the new local Vet Tom and emotions and feeling blossom in such a gorgeous way.

This is another beautiful and compelling story from MS Crosby, she really knows how to pull at the readers heart strings, bring characters to life and making the reader feel a part of the story. This one is moving and emotional and ticks all of the boxes for a story that I would highly recommend and yay it is the first in a series so I look forward to more stories set in Magnolia Grove and keeping in touch with Meghan and Tom, Tracy Lucas and Gabriel, thank you MS Crosby for another keeper.

My Review of “The Summer of New Beginnings” by Bette Lee Crosby

Kudos to Bette Lee Crosby , Author of “The Summer of New Beginnings”, for writing such a heartwarming, captivating and intriguing story about the importance of family. I appreciate that Bette Lee Crosby stresses the importance of family, friends, emotional support , love and hope. The author magically tells her story with wonderful detail and vivid descriptions.

Life isn’t simple, and the ups and downs can be complicated and stressful. The genres for this novel are Fiction and Women’s Fiction. Bette Lee Crosby describe her characters as complex and complicated, possibly due to the circumstances that exist at the time. Her colorful cast of characters are flawed, quirky, mostly loyal, determined and mostly likable. One of the characters is mean-spirited and dishonest.

Meghan Briggs and her sister Tracy are as different as can be. Meghan seems to always be responsible, and Tracy is more of a party, let’s have fun type of person. When the Briggs family loses their father, the stresses and burdens seem to fall on Meghan. Meghan casts aside her dreams of going to Journalism school to take over her father’s local community journal. and advertising. Tracy takes off with her boyfriend. Their mother loves entertaining and preparing food, and wishes things as they once were.

Meghan loves writing in composition notebooks her thoughts and ideas. As she sits by the water, she sees a dog struggling in the water. It is very stormy now, but Meghan rescues the stray dog, and brings him home. Of course she hopes that no one owns him.”Sox’ the dog seems to be rescuing Meghan as much as Meghan had rescued him.

Tracy comes home unexpectedly with a baby, and this presents a new set of complications. There are new circumstances and new changes that occur. Can there be a “happily ever after”? How will the family come together? I love the way the author discusses the importance of communication, taking chances, doing the best you can, and willingness to learn and share. I would highly recommend this wonderful emotional book for readers of Women Fiction. I received An Advanced Reading ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

The summer of new beginnings is a story of a family whose lives were changed when George, Lila’s husband & Meghan & Tracy’s Dad suddenly passes away the day before Meghan was leaving for college ; Life as they all knew changed for ever. Meghan decides to put going to college on hold and run her father’s business snip and save, it was the one way to help financially and keep her father’s memory( while her sister Tracy runs off with a Dominic a boy who did not love her the way she deserved to be love. Life changed again for the whole when Sox the dog arrived in Meghan’s life; she was positive he was sent to her by Dad who was watching from above. I don’t want to give this beautiful story away, but the most important lesson Meghan learned and taught me is; sometimes when tragedies come and redirect our lives, how we react and move forward opens us up to a beautiful new life with people and opportunities that would of never come our way. I love how Meghan is certain that George really never left them; that he is watching from above and guiding them to find love & happiness. This once broken family has found happiness and moving forward even though it’s different from the original path they had planned. Betty Lee Crosby for sharing such a beautiful story.

This was such a beautiful book, starting with the cover! I was excited to see a new series by Bette Lee Crosby and once again she did not disappoint. I've never read one of her books that I didn't love. There is almost something magical in her writing.

Magnolia Grove is one of those towns you'd love to live in. And the author gives such a descriptive writing of the town, you feel as if you live there.

The characters were well developed and very easy to like. The author manages to bring them to life. By the end of the book, you feel as if they are your friends.

This is truly a touching, at times emotional, story. I look forward to the next in the series! I highly recommend The Summer of New Beginnings!

The thing I enjoy most about ALL of Bette Lee Crosby books are that she writes about ‘real’ people. People whose lives you become part of as you read the book. You can laugh with them, grieve with them, worry about things together and share their joys as well. And even though there are some tough issues dealt with in THE SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS such as death, sacrifice, disability and domestic abuse; these are counter-balanced by love, support, selflessness and laughter.

At the start of the story George, dies and leaves a Lila a widow and their two daughters grieving his loss and to pick up the pieces. Meghan, closest to her father, gives up her dreams to take over the family business, however she feels that her father may not be fully gone and is still there guiding her. Tracy rebels without her father’s firm and loving hand and runs off to another state with her boyfriend’ Lila, his wife, has lost her reason for being and is struggling to find out what her role is in life now – she was happiest cooking huge meals – but with only two at home now she is at a loss. Tracy returns home with her baby boy, Lucas, her dreams broken. Her return is the turning point for a family that is merely existing – not living. Lila now has a purpose in life – being a grandmother – and cooking gain. Just after Tracy’s return, Meghan rescues a drowning puppy from the lake when a sudden storm blows up – and so Sox comes into their lives. He plays an important part. Through him they discover that Lucas has a medical problem and Meghan meets the local vet who becomes a love interest.

The two sisters start to work together for a common goal, helping Lucas. There are squabbles – come on, they are sisters after all; lessons are learned, chances taken and slowly the story works its magic. By the end, there is the hope that each of the Briggs family will get their happy ever after. But this is the first of the Magnolia Grove Series so no matter that most of the threads have been tied, there is a ‘wait, there’s more’ for one of the family members. I can hardly wait until October when the next book is released.

With thanks to the author for my copy to read and review

I have to thank NetGalley and Lake Union for the honor of reading this awesome book.

I never expect anything but the best from Bette Lee Crosby and she has never let me down.
This is a very sweet, emotional story of loss, love, laughter and family.
It starts out a bit on the sad part then it gets better and better all the way through.
Meghan has plans to go to college to be a writer/journalist but when her father dies she puts her plans on hold to continue running his small business, Snip N Save. It’s a way to keep her father alive. She works hard and is a very capable and dependable daughter.
Tracy, Meghan’s sister, is a bit unreliable. She up and moves away with her boyfriend, Dominic who is really just a big jerk. She ends up coming back home after several years with her baby boy, Lucas.
Lila, the mother of the girls and widow of George. She just wants her girls to be home, happy and get along.
Sox, a dog that Meghan rescues from the lake is one very smart dog. He loves Meghan and Lucas dearly. He has ways that made me fall in love with him. We should all have such a good dog. Smart, loving and has a way of getting Meghan to see things that she might not have seen without him.
Will these young ladies find love and happiness. Will Tracy stay home and make a good life for herself and her son?
Bette outdid herself with this book. It was wonderful from start to finish. I truly loved it so so much. I always know I’m in for a good read when Bette writes a new book. Look forward to hearing more about this family.

This is not a book to read on the train or at lunch in the office. It’s a book to read curled up on the couch at home with a warm blanket, cup of tea and box of tissues, where you can laugh and cry without feeling conspicuous.

Every family has its rough times and the Briggs family is working through a lot of issues - the death of beloved husband and father George, rebellion by older daughter Tracy and the abandonment of Meghan's dream of attending journalism school so she can take over producing her father's newsletter.

Through the ups and downs of that summer, the family grows closer and stronger. Tracy loves and loses and returns home a single mom of an adorable, challenging little boy. Meghan relives the trauma of losing her childhood dog Clancy when she rescues a dog from the lake. Is he going to be hers or will she lose him, too. And what about the new vet in town and a new career path? Through it all Tracy realizes Meghan has always been there on her side, supporting her. And Meghan comes to recognize Tracy's importance in her life while they both try to define their new roles in the family.

I must admit I've never read anything by Bette Lee Crosby that I didn't rate 5 stars so I started this book with high expectations. I was not disappointed. I didn't get any housework done today but I feel SO good after finishing this book. Since it's listed as a Magnolia Grove novel, I'm hoping this is the first in a series of stories. After all we need to know what happens with Lucas and with Tracy and Gabriel. What about Lila and Bruce Pendergast? Is there something there?

You can always depend on Bette Lee Crosby to give the reader a great book and this one is no exception. It's a story about a family that works through many hardships as they continue to love each other.

Lila and George have the perfect family with daughters Tracy and Meghan. George has a small news flyer that he publishes weekly called Snip 'N Save and his daughter Meghan frequently helped him with it. The summer before she was due to go to college, there was a tragedy in the family when George died unexpectedly. Meghan decides to wait a year to start college to try to help the family. Her sister Tracy starts to ignore curfews and family rules and eventually runs away with her boyfriend. Lila and Meghan try to keep the family together as the dynamics of the original family change because now it's only the two of them wondering and hoping the Tracy will return to their family.

This is a wonderful story about love and forgiveness within a family. I hope that this will be a series because this book is mainly Meghan's story and I'd love to read more about Tracy. I am hoping that since the title calls it a magnolia grove novel, that means that this is the first book about this family with more to follow.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book because it had 3 main women characters all in different stages in life in the same family. I thought they all were very strong women though I believe they didn't think so. Meghan the youngest daughter on the cusp of going to journalism school has to put it on hold to run the business Snip and Save that her father created after he suddenly passed. Tracy the wild child up and moves to Philadelphia with her boyfriend wanting nothing to do with the business. Lila (Mom) who has to figure out how to help her daughters while she too is struggling. The author does a great job in showing the strength they have in tough situations.

Meghan and Tracy Briggs and their mom Lila live together after the unexpected death of the girl’s father and Lila’s husband George. Tracy is a ‘wild child’ and Lila is not the disciplinarian that her husband was. One day Tracy announces she is leaving to go live with her boyfriend in another state. Meghan has taken over her father’s newsletter instead of going to college to follow her dream of journalism. She rescues a dog from a lake and then is afraid it belongs to someone else. She has already fallen in love with the dog. She and Tracy keep in touch but Tracy does not visit. A few years later she comes home with a baby after leaving the boyfriend. Great book, Mrs Crosby. You make me feel like I am part of the family.

What can be said about the book I just read by Bette Lee Crosby? “The Summer of New Beginnings” had a mix of emotions that I experienced just as the characters had felt in this heartwarming book. The family in the story stay glued together, a bond like no other. Plus, a sweet dog to top it off makes this book a beautiful story written by a gifted writer. But, a tissue-alert is an absolute necessity.

The character, Meghan, is so sweet and would do anything for her family. After the family deals with a sudden hardship, Meghan has to take a different career path. In order to help keep her family's business going, Meghan puts off her dream of becoming a journalist for now. Will she ever get back on track to the path she wanted to take or is she really happy with the path that was chosen for her? I love the journal entries that Meghan writes. It gives the reader an understanding of Meghan's personal thoughts of what life really is like for her; from being sad to happy, or in love, and the decisions she is facing. As Meghan writes, “Somehow, someway, I'll make this work.”

Bette is a wonderful, skillful writer. I can almost picture her scribbling in a notebook of ideas using a quill pen for some reason. Maybe because quills are unique, and Bette is a one-of-a-kind, unique author. She has that special “something” that brings her characters to life. Her pages are so elegant from beginning to end. I was so delighted and honored to be offered her book. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a cuddle-with-your-dog kind of read.

~This book was given to me by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.~

A story of healing from grief, family, a lost dog, love, and a little bit of magic through one summer was a gently-paced, sparkling tale that warmed my heart and left me wanting to return back to Magnolia Grove as soon as I can.

The Summer of New Beginnings is only my second book by the author, but like the first one, I found it a lovely, sunny reading experience even if the author allowed sadness and loss to touch characters' lives. Like the first book, the laid back writing style was cozy and engaging. It pulls the reader in emotionally. Sad events like the lost of Meghan and Tracy's daddy right when they are finishing high school left a gaping hole.

The story begins when settled and oh-so responsible Meghan rescues a stray dog and grows attached so that she is afraid to even look for the original owners. This taking a chance and opening her heart leads her back to her love of journaling and animals like before her dad died and she got burdened to take care of her dad's business.
Meghan's older sister, Tracy returns home with a baby boy and a whole lot of new perspective after ignoring the concern from her mom and sister and leaving with her bad boy boyfriend who refused to make a commitment. She's a single mama now and she's ready to see her family for the treasure it is. I loved how the widowed mom and the sisters faced all their life's trials together and grew past their grief to be a family again.

The story of Tracy's fears about her little boy being not quite right and all of them pulling together to get him the medical attention he needed even while her ex-boyfriend continues to be an irritant full of threats was well done. I learned a great deal about diagnosis, testing, and treatment for hearing loss, but mostly the author brought out about how a parent goes through learning about their child's special needs, coming to grips with it, needing lots of support (like what Tracy got from Meghan, her mom, and an old friend who is hearing impaired), and then moving forward to take action.

And, of course Meghan starts to come out of the circle pattern she's been content in when her sister returns, but also when a certain handsome and kind animal vet takes an interest. It was a sweet and gentle romance.

Through the story, there is an element of magical realism in relation to Meghan and Tracy's dad that I thought was a cute touch. Did he come back to help his family heal and steer them to find their joy again? Possibly.

I enjoyed the book using the Kindle Unlimited option. This one offered both ebook and audio so I ended up switching back and forth, but mostly in audio edition. I've enjoyed the main narrator, Shannon McMannus in one other book and I felt she was definitely the right fit for this story style. She voiced the three women and a host of surrounding characters- mostly male- well. She caught the emotion and pace, but also that comfy small town southern feeling just right. I will definitely be watching for more of her narration work.

All in all, I found this gently-paced small town story of family and love was just the thing and recommend it to those who want a light women's fiction or sweet contemporary romance.

Lila and George Briggs have a wonderful life with their two daughters Tracy and Meghan.
When George Briggs dies his family has to move forward without him. Meghan takes over her fathers newsletter instead of going to college. Tracy is the wild child that decides to move with her boyfriend to another state.
Conflicts, mistakes, domestic abuse, are all issues that could pull this family apart, yet they grow stronger. The child with a disability really hit home for me. This story made me laugh and cry(keep tissues close). A beautifully written story with well developed characters.

Thank you NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Bette Lee Crosby for the opportunity to read this wonderfully heartwarming story.

I don’t know why I thought this was going to be a small town romance, but once I adjusted I enjoyed the book. Meghan is like the back bone to the family and takes on a lot after the death of her father.

Her sister and mother are at odd because they just don’t see things eye to eye. SO there is that tension but there really wasn’t much drama.

The story is about these three women in a roundabout way but with most of the focus on Meghan. There is a romance but it’s not the center of the book by any means.

I don’t think I will continue with the series. It was ok just not really my thing.

The narration is great though I wished we had more of Eric G. Dove he really only has a small part.

A boy, a dog and family dynamics brought me to tears many times during the story. The characters are full of distinct personalities and opinions. When life changes drastically for each person, the ability to handle the changes and possible outcomes are found through major decisions and risks. Each story I read from this author is amazing. Tissues needed for this one. I received a copy of this story from the author and this is my own personal honest opinion.

Every now and again I hear about books by authors that I've heard of, but really have never come across their books to read. Today's post is about exactly that kind of book. I've heard of author, Bette Lee Crosby, and I have actually seen her books out there, but invariably, I have 10 or 20 books in my "to be read" pile, and I think to myself, "oh, I'll have to read one of her books when I have a spare weekend" and then it never happens. I've finally been able to put on the breaks, push some of the TBR books back, and I've been able to read my first Bette Lee Crosby book. Boy am I glad I did!

Before I tell you about the book, let me tell you that if any of the following things interest you, then this book is for you:

Are you a fan of the television show, This Is Us?
Do you like author, Debbie Macomber?
Do you love dogs?
Are you fan of "sisterhood" books?
What about books on family and motherhood?
Do you like Southern fiction?
Do you enjoy small town life fiction stories?
Do you like fiction that encourages your career aspirations?
Are you in a multigenerational book club group?
Do you need a gift for your mother, sister, best girlfriend?
Okay, now on to the book:

When George Briggs suddenly died, he left behind his wife, Lila and two daughters, Tracy and Meghan. Tracy worked at a bank and Meghan was just about to go off to college to become a journalist. Losing her father changed everything for Meghan when she decided to stay home and run her father's business.

Meghan had always been very close to her father and losing him affected her differently than her sister, Tracy.  Meghan was thought of as the sensible daughter, while Tracy was a bit of a "wild child" - the rebellious one. Tracy fell in love with "bad boy" Dominic, and she even went against her mom's wishes and moved to away to Philadelphia.  When Tracy arrived back home to Georgia after a couple of years, she was single, she had baby Lucas with her, and Lila took on the role of grandmother.

Meghan rescued a stray dog she named Sox and while she was trying to find the pup's owner, everyone fell in love with him, especially Lucas. Meghan was positive Sox was sent to her by dad who was watching from above.

The Summer of New Beginnings read speed of light fast for me, and I blew through this book cover to cover. It's the kind of book where the characters are so easy to connect with to the extent that you feel like you know what they are thinking. Some of the chapters actually feel like diary entries.

I really enjoyed Bette Lee Crosby's style of writing, and while this was my first Crosby book, I can't wait to read the next book of this series!  I would highly recommend this book (and the series) to anyone who enjoys a great, well developed story with characters you will want to know.
