After hosting so many meals at his place, Emiya is invited to Illya’s for Christmas dinner. But he was still tasked to prep a dish for the celebration. Then after the party, Emiya returns home to see that Saber and Taiga have built an igloo in the yard. And what better dish to eat outside in the winter air than oden, Japanese fishcake stew.
These are definitely comfort reads to get a break from the chaos of the Fate series, the characters are so wholesome and the recipes look amazing.
I decided to pick these up bc I watched the anime adaptation and it got me out of a bad mental place, so this series will always be very dear to me. Can't wait to keep up.
The side stories made me go akdajdhslak I'm so glad they decided to include them
Christmas at Illya's castle, Shirou's snow bunnies, tea and scones on the school rooftop, the penguin ice shaving machine (complete with Shirou's memory of using it with Taiga and Kiritsugu, then his cute lion creation for Saber - cue tears), and a certain golden-haired someone hitting on Saber (cue squeeeeeeeing because yes, I just finished FGO ADF Babylonia). The side stories are off the hook - FGO fans and those of us who love a certain white-haired heroic spirit from FSN/UBW have to love these, and who knew one of the recipes would come from the spoils of hunting with Beowulf?
Having been a fan of Fate/Stay Night back when when Altria was the only Saber class servant I have seen many different variations over the years (sadly the manga series tend to end prematurity when brought state side.) This series although not called Fate/(insert title) is still based on the characters mainly from the original Fate/Stay Night (there is some Fate/Grand Order though) though unlike most incarnations this manga series not only has no conflict but it also heavily influenced by the food inspired manga series offering recipes among as series of slice of life scenarios. That said although they do explain how to prepare the dishes found in the book it is based on Japanese cuisine so you might need some specialty ingredients and when cooking they use low, medium, and high heat so you might have to experiment to get things to how you will like them.
Sadly having less desire to cook than to support another Fate/Manga series I enjoyed the character interactions and it was nice to see everyone in such a peaceful world but I can pretty easily skip over most of the preparation stuff and still enjoy the book pretty quickly. Maybe someday I will feel inspired enough to create something within these pages but it will probably be as likely as me substituting ingredients from a series like Delicious in Dungeon World Guide: The Adventurer's Bible.
I liked the first one, so I picked up the second one. These stories are the perfect kind of relaxing read. They are cute and funny and totally low drama. Each is self-contained and short, which makes them perfect for quick reads when one has a little bit of time.
Some chapters stand out for me, like the Christmas one. It takes place at the Einzbern castle, a perfect winter wonderland setting, since the Fourth Grail War isn't taking place. There's something really wholesome and endearing about Berserker bringing in the Christmas tree, and Illya baking sugar cookies for him is adorable.
We also get to see Lancer being a Shipper on Deck for Shirou and Rin, which is funny. The author says that the chapter where this scene takes place in is inspired by the anime adaptation of Unlimited Blade Works.
Finally, whenever Archer cooks something and someone thinks that Shiro did it makes me laugh in Dramatic Irony.
The art is as good as in the first volume. It is that perfect mix of cute and, for lack of a better word, non-epic, that fits the slice-of-life atmosphere.
There is no difference between this volume and the first. It is more of the same. So, if you liked the first, then you will like the second. This is not a series where you should expect novelty in each volume, except perhaps in the dishes prepared.
Trickster Eric Novels gives Today's Menu for the Emiya Family volume 2 an A+
Very cute and I appreciate that we get more stories than the show. It is still very bare in story telling but less so than the first volume. If you’re a fan of the show, I recommend reading this just for the extra stories.
So e of the recipes are beyond my skill but I love how this manga gives you tips on cooking beyond the recipe. The artwork is amazing and the characters interactions are fun.
