The Bad Mother #2

The Bad Mother's Detox

Rate this book
Romantic Comedy / Funny Romance for ANY MOTHER who wants to laugh, feel good, relax and fall in love.

If you liked the Unmumsy Mum, Hurrah for Gin and the List, you’ll LOVE this new romantic comedy.

As a mother, I imagined myself somewhere between Mary Poppins and Jules Oliver.

You know – growing my own courgettes, laughing whilst covered in mud, possibly having my own kiddie clothing range … that sort of thing.

But unforeseen circumstances have thrown me far from vegetable patches and spoonfuls of sugar.

I am currently a single mother, living with my parents. And this New Year, I am in need of a major detox. What am I detoxing?

Daisy’s father, Nick.

New Year is a time to diet and purify (after, of course, finishing up all the Christmas crap – there’s no point trying to diet with all that still hanging around. Glass of port anyone?).

Mum is losing weight, courtesy of Jaffa cakes and low-fat strawberry angel delight (two of my five a day!). Dad is having a bicycle-clip clear out.

My detox is my feckless, irresponsible former boyfriend.

Alex and I will never work out if I can’t cut Nick out of my life.

But how can I, when he’s Daisy’s dad?

Fantastic

Had the book on my kindle for a while and finally started to read book 1, I was instantly hooked. Read book 1 in a matter of days and couldn't wait to download book 2 to continue the story. I was not disappointed and can't wait for book 3.

The next instalment in Juliette's life as she navigates being a single mum, with her ex, shacked up with her ex-best friend, and they are pregnant, and him wanting them to get back to gether. Add in the crazy family, as well as her on off love interest, Alex, and you have a laugh out loud tale of how she has to bend over backwards to do everything she can to ensure she retains residency of her precious little girl.
Going back to work after maternity, trying to find a place of her own, dealing with dodgy bosses, and errant boyfriends (ex and otherwise) as well as her sister's pregnancy, and dealing with the growing number of people living under her parent's roof, above the pub they own, doesn't make for a smooth journey, but it was a fun one!
Easy, funny read. On to book three!

Funny and entrancing

This is a really funny book as it's another instalment on how parenting really is. It looks at juliettes life as she faces everyday difficulties. She looses friends but makes new ones at the same time. She has to find accommodation for her and her daughter daisy. She shows women can be strong no matter what is thrown at them. The ending was predictable for a while but I am happy that the family may be on their way to happiness. My least favourite character was Helen she influences too much. My favourite character was daisy because she's so unpredictable. Would recommend this book to anyone I just hope there's another to follow

This is a new series to me and from the off it was clear that there was a pre-story here that I had not read. Turns out this is book two and apart from fairly frequent references to the history of Juliette, Nick and Alex not having read the first book is not a drawback as everything you need to know is recapped. Told in diary format by Juliette you have to trust that her narration is honest but it does feel disingenuous in many sections and it would have been interesting to see Nick and Alex's viewpoints.

This is pure fantasy and escapism and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It helps that Juliette's voice is warm, funny and engaging. So, even though I didn't entirely trust her and found that my brain was doing a lot of internal eye rolling and "Yeah, right"ing I still raced through the book. There is such a disconnect with reality displayed that you can't help but enjoy it. Nobody is getting a mortgage on a fire damaged hovel that has no roof; I don't care who you are mortgages just aren't given on that type of property. Least of all to someone with no regular income and, let's face it, Juliette does not have a regular income. Throw in the whole weird Nick applying for sole custody thing and it amps up the unbelievability.

It is, though, undoubtedly fun. Books are designed to do many things and one of them is entertain and this does that. I didn't laugh out loud but it did make me smile and that is something that rarely happens when the supposed humour of a book is used as one of it's main selling points. I like that despite living on top of each other Juliette's family is close knit and seem to genuinely love each other, it's just the people she chooses for herself that aren't good for her.

Great fun and allows you to leave reality far behind.

I really, really wasn't sure how to rate this book. I fell in love with the first one, was dying to read this one, but I was a bit disappointed, and here's why ...

*Spoiler alert*

The first book was fun, witty, romantic and sweet. In the second one you can still see the authors sense of humour and that's great, but I don't like what she did with Jules, and how she portrayed her relationship with Alex, her waiting for him to give her a bit of attention and his over jealous side taking over everything I thought was good about him. I didn't like the pregnancy part either, it made Jules look like a type of person that just randomly got pregnant with people in her life, and that's kind of lame and I just thought she deserved better than to be shown this way.

Ah Juliette !

Fazit:
Ein unterhaltsames Buch für zwischendurch. Werde die weiteren Teile aber nicht lesen.

Story number 2.5 in Suzy K. Quinn's bad mother's (...) series continues along the same theme as the novella (pregnancy) and the first full novel (diary), but there's a nuanced difference in the writing in this particular book. Much as 'the bad mother' has found her feet as a mother, it feels as if Suzy has found her feet in the chick-lit genre. Dont get me wrong, there are still elements of Suzy's work that still have me slapping my forehead at times (i.e where are all the 'normal', non-rich people?), but I think I have enjoyed seeing Suzy's comfort and confidence grow as she's written as much as I have enjoyed the story. I have noted a couple of reviews which pick up on grammar and syntax, there are 'quote-unquote 'grammatical errors throughout the bad mother series, however, it is important to remember the context in which these works are framed; they're diaries. One would expect sloppy discourse and poor grammar within diaries. I also chalked factual inaccuracies up as contextually appropriate in a similar way. In my review of the first book I said that I had no idea why I enjoyed the book, I still have no idea why I enjoyed the second book either! It looks most bizarre sat between professional textbooks, psychological thrillers and a peppering of Stephen King. But now I'm feeling sad that the journey is over. From pregnancy to toddler, immature 20 something to almost grown up. I do believe that a huge part of the charm is that the books are cute, safe, comfortable and relaxing. If you've got a weekend off, or a few evenings to yourself definitely pick the series up and read from novella, through pregnancy and across detox.

I have now read the whole set of Bad Mother books, not in the right order….which posed certain problems when remembering what happened in the next book and thinking “but she’s already met her” and suchlike.

Again, like the others I loved the writing style and humour and was rooting for Juliette all the way through. I found this to be the darkest of all the bad Mother books in that she faced losing her daughter Daisy. I also found this to be the least believable as she bought a wreck of a house with a mortgage on a part-time wage and almost single-handedly did it up………though I had to remind myself “this is fiction” – a thing I often scream at other reviews when they say something is unrealistic.

Alex was his usual annoying un-committed self, as was Nick but for different reasons……..although Nick did seem to be creating some responsibility out of somewhere – maybe he’d commissioned himself an acting job!!
The rest of the family were comfortingly the same – Mum in her diabtetes denial, softy Dad, nutty Jon Boy and Juliettes sisters, Laura being pregnant and Brandi with her son.

So sad to have read them all now, I need Suzy to get on and make another one…..Pleeeeease.

Recommend them to anyone who wants a light-hearted look at life and a giggle……..and everyone else because I like them lots.

Oh this was brilliant

"But the truth is, Mum’s weight puts a lot of stress on her body. Even holding in a fart gives her backache."

From worries about white walkers in the Garden to Singing Poo toys!

Its filled with good old British Humor, the characters are all people we know in some form or another.... Being a mum of two Jillian is so relatable.

Last book i was put off by Alex... This books the same... But then when has anyone ever been handed Mr Perfect on a plate, My husband Can be a pain in the Arse too but still love him more than a Brew with Biccies.

Jillian, shes relatable Likable and Hilarious, i Just wished she could have been a little harder on Nick, i was so disappointed in her Last book when he ended up sleeping in her bed.... Still she Stayed Loyal to Alex through all his Man moods and Tantrums in this Detox.

Brilliant read, Loved it more than the first as Jillian has taken a no shit stance on some Apects of her life.. Now with her new situation i hope Nick finally stops Pestering her.

I enjoyed every little bit of this lovely RomCom. From the way the characters are shaped to life, to real life situations, everything is so neatly arranged.

I like it when a book brings real life situations into a story.

It’a an easy read, so easy, that you don’t even notice when you finished the book.

The bad Mother’s Detox, is the second installment in the series bearing the same name, and presents us the life of a young and single mom.

Julliete, cause this is her story, has a baby girl with a dad, who’s not much of dad for his baby. Well, not until Juliette starts asking for maintenance money. That’s when things start going crazy.

Then, we have Alex, which is the oner of the Dalton Hotels chain. He likes her a ton, but...as she says, they have a lot of issues. Opposites attract amd all that.
Even though he likes her and her daughter, Daisy, he can’t get over the fact that, she’s still in contact with Nick.

Will their relatiinship stand a chance or it will end ?! I guess will see...

Bad Mother’s Detox was just what this single mom needed

When I first started reading Bad Mother’s Detox, I wasn’t expecting to read a woman’s diary or journal. This change in the normal book format, journal entries instead of chapters, was refreshing. It was a fabulous format for the storyline.

Juliette, a single mom of a toddler, is defending her right to “maintenance” and “residency”. Nick, the baby’s father is refusing to pay “maintenance” and has decided to fight for “residency” in an attempt to “get my family back”. What ensues is a comical look at day to day life through Juliette’s eyes for one solid year. The hoops this young woman has to jump through are supposed to knock her down, make her seem unfit as a parent, but instead they make her a stronger woman and mother.

All in all, this definitely lives up to its description as a Laugh out Loud Comedy Romance about motherhood”. I definitely recommend this book!

Book 2, I haven't read the first one and it was a bit difficult to get into it.

Why kept her
ex, the father of her child, asking her to come back, get together again, when he was living and having a baby with another woman?? I totally didn't get it.

Both her love interests are fairly wealthy which I guess levels the playing field but seems quite unusual as she didn't come across very sophisticated and normally being in those wealthy circles.

The book was easy to read and funny but those funny moments came mainly from the little daughter doing inappropriate things that kids simply do. I missed the real motherly bonds with her daughter.

The main problem though was that I didn't root for any of the guys to win her over. They were both selfish and arrogant, one a control freak the other irresponsible, and really the mother should get her feet back up and concentrate on her daughter without a guy. That's why the end made me very angry...also because it lacked innovation.

Having enjoyed the first book in this series I instantly downloaded this one. This continues the story of Juliette, Daisy, Alex, Nick et al immediately after the end of book one. The author once again takes us on a journey. She gives us more laugh out loud moments, some happy and sad ones, and a lot of 'oh for goodness sake, open your eyes' moment. Maybe it's just me that finds herself shouting at my Kindle in an attempt to get characters to grow up and accept things before making the biggest mistake of their lives.

I love the way the story flows and the ending has me desperate for far more. I will be Facebook stalking the author waiting not so patiently for the next part in the saga. In the meantime I will content myself with the wee surprise the author gave me when I got to the end of the book. Cannot wait for more from the author.

I love love love this series!! I thought the first book was really good with some great laugh out loud moments and really pulled at your heart strings but this book has definitely eclipsed the first for me. Juliet is such a great character - she's a first time mum trying to make her way through the trials and tribulations of having a child, a failed a relationship and a are we/aren't we relationship all at the same time. It's really well written and makes you fight for the character. Nick continues to be an idiot while his mother continues to be a witch. Alex Dalton is particularly infuriating with his jealousy of Nick but it's impossible to not love him for how much he obviously adores Juliet. And THE ENDING!!!!! I cannot wait for the next instalment - baby Dalton and Alex as a daddy is too cute to imagine and I can't wait until Helen and Nick find out!!!

Bad Mother's Detox

My thoughts on this book are exactly the same as they were on The Bad Mother's Diary.

A good, lighthearted read let down by appalling grammar. 'Nick and I's wedding day'. When did 'I' become a possessive pronoun? Even my kindle underlines this in red. Please Ms Quinn, find yourself a proofreader.

Also, I was looking forward to finding out what Nick's mother thought of Juliette using his credit card (at the end of her previous book) but this wasn't mentioned.

I don't think I will read any more of this author's-books, the awful grammar really spoilt this one for me.

A generous 3 stars

Well written and punctuated give this book 3 stars as I had a few chuckles over some of the chi l dilemmas (I have 2 and have arrived at work with cereal and his knows what on me). However, what an awful male lead in Alex, who would cheer for such a wanker! Other than his material worth I see no redeeming qualities in him. This isn't deep literature, and doesn't pretend to me, but hits such shallow notes that the author should feel a truffle embarrassed. Poor man's Bridget Jones still...sorry

~ laugh-out-loud funny!
Juliette and Alex are doing their best to work through their new relationship issues. However, Alex is finding is hard to accept Juliette’s ex-flame and current baby-daddy, Nick. Nick is no better at his attempts to be a decent father to they’re daughter, Daisy, All this while she is trying to get back to work, struggle with no child support, fight off Nick’s advances and request for full custody, plus find a proper home for her and Daisy. Just when she thought she’d conquered it all... she hadn’t.

A good lighthearted read

At first I found it difficult to get into the style of writing. Even though it said bridget Jones diary I somehow forgot the diary part. I thought that I wouldnt be able to get into the characters.

However, I loved juliette she was a cracking character and her whole family had me chuckling out loud. I thought Alex and Nick were both arseholes but juliette was witty, relatable and good fun.

Glad I read this book. Very lighthearted even though the main character went through some crap. Enjoyable read.

Juliette and ?

Left in the nightmarish situation of having your fiancee sleep with your best friend while your pregnant, Juliette has more than a full plate. Having a baby and no husband means going home to her parents and taking extended maternity leave, only to return to work to learn her old boss has been replaced by a nut job!I
Lots of fun and not so fun but out it together and it's highly entertaining!
You won't want to miss this crazy like of characters and situations. Enjoy!

Funny Mother

I waited and waited for Bad Mothers Detox. Oh my goodness, it was so good, so funny, and really Juliettes misfortunes. Just so good, I am looking forward to the next Bad Mother Story. I read this in a day, and I will read anything Suzy writes without hesitation. Where do you come up with this stuff. Sooo good. So anxious to hear what happens with Juliette, Alex, Daisy and the new baby.

I need more.......

Um I started this book tonight, or rather last night since its now 4:30am. And I NEED MORREEEEEEEE.

I couldn't put it down, so much better than the first book, Alex is infuriating but I rooted for him until the end, still don't like Nick the dickweevil. And I very much wanted to punch a couple of others in the throat....I also wanted to kick Alex in the balls at one point.

But seriously, gimme more, more more more!

Please? Pretty please?
