Le cinéma sud-coréen: du confucianisme à l'avant-garde

Le cinéma sud-coréen, l'un des plus méconnus au monde, a toujours été le lieu d'une confrontation entre pouvoirs politiques et expérimentation créative. Né sous l'occupation japonaise (1910-1945), il adopte d'emblée - sous des apparences réalistes - la forme mélodramatique convenant aux pouvoirs dictatoriaux. Le passage à un régime officiellement démocratique en 1987 entraîne une atténuation de la censure, l'ouverture totale des écrans aux films américains et l'apparition ou l'affirmation de nouvelles esthétiques cinématographiques. Le cinéma mélodramatique, imprégné de confucianisme, entame alors son déclin. Le cinéma des collectifs marxistes jusqu'alors clandestin tente une alternative au nouvel ordre spectaculaire dominé par la très présente "Nouvelle Vague" dont le courant majoritaire est moderniste, promoteur des valeurs du néo-libéralisme triomphant. Son courant minoritaire produit un cinéma expérimental abstrait ou ultra-réaliste. Les catégories stylistiques ethnocentristes élaborées en Occident ne peuvent cerner la richesse de cette "Nouvelle Vague". La notion avant-gardiste de spectacle social, associant en une vision globale arts, idéologies et société, aide à mieux cerner l'exemplarité du cinéma sud-coréen.

This analysis of South Korean cinema is very thorough and covers all the eras up till the book was published. Coppola wites about the theory and movements in South Korea and doesn't just focus on bland movie summaries throughout the book he gives you enough summary to know what the film is generally about but he relegates the in depth film summary section to an appendix in the back of the book. The book focuses on the importance of realism in early Korean melodramas and dives into an era of politically charged left leaning films from the Changsan Kotmae collective and the Yallasong collective. I found the section on the Changsan Kotmae collective collective to be very informative and it's impressive what they were able to accomplish under the strict censorship of the dictatorship. This book is not an easy read especially since French is not my first language. It's worth it though because Coppola is an absolute expert on the subject and his writing is very detailed and thorough.
