After the 1st half of book 1 it picks up....

For me, in the first half of book 1 the interval between the ebb and flow of action or events seemed drawn out and I almost ditched the entire read. But, as usual persisted in the hopes of the series would substantially pick up the pace. The main character appeared to me in the first half of the book to be so withdrawn and ‘out of it’ that she was unable to contribute to the group and being a wandering lookout was the extreme end of her capability. By the second book the action and challenges commenced and the pace picked up. But I was left puzzled as to the main character who threw off her cloak of ineptitude and dullness to become a totally different person. In fact I went back to re-read a portion to see if I had missed something.

In Books 2 & 3 the pace, challenges and action kept it moving along and the read was no longer an exercise in patience and persistence. I could finally get into the read.

After the End Trilogy by Mark Gillespie . Anthology included The Curse, The Sinners, and The End War. After a great war, violence, hatred, prejudice were all inclusive in the separate survival groups. Each group's leader had a different agenda which had a extremely personal radical purpose. The first two stories were fast paced and all encompassing, the third one felt unfinished. Would have liked to have seen Eda and Frankie Boy meet up with the other Nomads.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This collection contained three novels: The Curse, The Sinners, and The End War. And while I would recommend reading them in order, they are each essentially self-contained.

All three of these novels are set in a post-apocalyptic America. The country has been devastated by a major international war. There are pockets of survivors throughout the country, but limited communication between the groups and no trust. We follow Eda as she makes her way out of one community into the wider, wilder land. Along the way, we meet other survivors; some good, some evil.

I found there to be more characterization in this book than I would have expected. Many characters have multiple facets and few felt cut-out. The majority of the characters we meet have at least one major surprise that kept this reader on her toes. One of my complaints about this story was that Eda is in her mid-thirties. She certainly read much younger than that. I understand she grew up in an age of war and the "wild years", but she frequently read more like a child than a full-grown woman.

The first book, The Curse, started a little slow, but allowed the reader to understand the part of the world Eda knew. Once the action picked up, it seldom let go. The action continues through the next two installments.

Each book was on the short side, almost a collection of three novellas. I am more accustomed to longer forays into the post-apocalyptic world, but this was well-done shorter fiction. I could certainly read about more of Eda's encounters and the next phase After the End.

I would be happy to read more works by Mark Gillespie and I will certainly watch for future installments in this world.

I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley, all thoughts in this review are my own.

This series is tough to rate for me.
The first book was a disaster to get into the story. To be honest I almost gave up, but I read a review stating the same thing and that it would be worth it to hang in there. So that is what I did.
And indeed, the story, Edas’ adventure did get better. I really started to like and enjoy it. Her development was a bit abrupt at times, not very well shown on the pages. But still.
Until it was suddenly over.
And there I was after the third and last book, thinking.

This was a good read but what was the purpose?

We learn that the community Eda grows up in after the war isn’t what everyone was made to believe.
Her “sheltered” life changes after the discovery and Eda leaves and takes on her own journey to find a place in this post apocalyptic world.
On her adventurous track through a small part of the United States, she meets and interacts with various groups of survivors and struggles with their good or sinister intentions.
And boom the story ended.

Are there more books in planning? I can’t tell because I didn’t find anything of the sort here on GR.
And have to assume it was intentional.

Action packed post apocalypse world.

Eda is a strong willed and brave. Instead of staying in safe New York with its deadly secrets and lies Eda embarks on an adventure through America where she meets other survivors.
I like this book it had a good story line and made me think it would be like that in some ways groups would sprout up with many different beliefs on how the world ended. Danger and adventure go hand in hand with this one. I found myself emersed in the story and characters. I wont lie I did grieve for them too.
I can’t wait to start his other book The Exterminaters trilogy

I nearly gave up halfway through book one, but another review told me to persevere so I did and boy do I regret it.

The dialogue tags are all He said and She said, which is irritating beyond belief. This feels like it was fanfiction written by a twelve year old.

This was a good dystopian but it was bogged down by too much of telling what was just shown. Definitely need to have the trilogy or you'll be left hanging! Great for a lazy afternoon but not mind blowing writing!

While I know this is a trilogy of books, so I have to judge overall, I just couldn't get into it. Disjointed in places, hard to get into in others, while I read this, it's already blending into the standard fare of reading of post-apocalyptic books that I've read. It's not that it's entirely bad, but it really doesn't stand out as something that I'd feel I needed to read again.
If you're looking for predictable, post-apoc with very few genre-based surprises, and you can forgive the disjointedness, then this collection should work just fine.

I read and reviewed Advance Reader Copies of the three books in this series and enjoyed each of them. These books follow the same female protagonist through various adventures or in some cases misadventures which are very well crafted. When I saw this box set, I had to buy it so that I can reread these three stories in a seamless progression. If you enjoy well written dystopian stories with strong well-developed characters this box set is a must read.

It was a good book

I liked that it was years after a great war. It was an interesting take on how people would still be full of hate and resentment with all the loss.
