Though I believe this text does a good job of generalizing for multiple disciplines, I think it's still important to note I'm an English teacher reviewing this book. There are a lot of gems in here. Some strategies I already use; some strategies I will implement in the future. With the strategies I already use, the text is helpful in articulating why those strategies are effective in academic jargon.
This book is optimistic, which isn't inherently a bad thing. But the ideal classroom expected in this book is rarely the reality. Two options: (1) our expectations create our reality, so expecting a class to be engaged will lead them to be engaged, or (2) expectations are resentment on layaway, so we may be setting ourselves up for frustration.
There were several spots where the text dragged or restated a lot of the jargon surrounding the main acronym. Some chapters had a lot of concrete strategies... other chapters only had vague notions hiding underneath sounds-good prose.
This book is jam-packed with teaching ideas. It helped me understand how to plan more effectively and gave literally hundreds of ideas that will make teaching and learning even better than it has been. I recommend this book very highly. There is also a course being taught online through Boise State. I learned so much in the course and through the book. It was a transformational experience!!!
