Generation Z #6

The Queen Unchained

Rate this book
In the thrilling conclusion to Generation Z, Peter Meredith has created a work of unsurpassed vision, power, and imagination. The Queen Unchained transports us to a world filled with zombies that are unlike any we have ever experienced before.
But there are worse things than the undead.
The Black Captain emerges victorious at every turn.
To the south, Jenn Lockhart begins her reign as queen, isolated and vulnerable. The signs all point to a coming invasion, and yet she has a fleet that consists of only one ship and an army that’s made up of broken ex-whores, a handful of children, and a few cowardly men who haven’t run away only because they were afraid to leave.
To the north, assassins and spies haunt the island of Bainbridge, turning the people against the idea of war and undercutting the leadership of Governor Deanna Grey at every turn. Her people cling in desperation to the idea that maybe the Corsairs can be reasoned with and that war can be avoided. Deanna knows it’s the hope of fools. With no other choice, she decides to adopt Jillybean’s craziest idea yet—she plans to blow up her own walls.
To the east, Corsairs and mountain bandits converge on the island, driving little Emily Grey before them. She has no choice but to flee from one danger to the next. If she’s caught, she knows that her mother would trade all of Bainbridge to keep her safe.
And in the middle of the Corsair lair is Jillybean, naked, chained, and collared like a dog. Although she’s able to withstand the barbaric tortures inflicted on her, she breaks mentally, physically and emotionally when the people she swore to protect are horribly mutilated in front of her. Now, it’s not just her body that’s enslaved, it’s her mind as well. And hers is a mind that can overcome every enemy.

***Obligatory Disclaimer 1***
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the publisher/narrator at my request and have chosen to write this unbiased review of my own volition.

***Disclaimer 2***
I have not read the first five books (yet), so there are inherently some things I did not understand that perhaps I should have.

Now, this was my first experience with narrator Brian Callanan and he did not disappoint! Although the females leave a bit to be desired, overall his voices are well crafted and distinct. His vocal inflections are spot on and his shifts in tempo are appropriate to the action.

Right at the start we are dropped into a rather tense situation with Emily that was very confusing, and subsequent scenes with the other major characters continued that trend.

I have to assume the previous book ended on quite the cliffhanger.

That said, however, the author does a great job of filling in just enough details for me to piece together what was going on and who was who.

With the exception of Gilly, of course. It was only after the third or fourth scene from her POV that I realized she is not a seer or a medium, she's just crazy. She's not schizophrenic, and she doesn't have multiple personalities. Not exactly. But she lies somewhere in the gap between those two disorders in something that we don't have a name for.

Needless to say, this combined with her native intellect quickly made her my favorite character and the one I most strongly rooted for.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of and a lot of points of connection between those characters that are not immediately apparent.

The story is told through the eyes of an omniscient narrator that commonly goes off on tangents about places and histories that the characters are either unaware of or wouldn't care about, which became quite obnoxious rather quickly.

Apart from this there are a small handful of points regarding science and physics in which the author misspeaks, but overall the science, physics, and medical information seems sound. As are the battle tactics, which was refreshing.

I don't have any other critiques though. The writing is good, characterization fantastic, and the plotting is far tighter that I ever could have expected from a 20-hour audiobook!

There is clearly a lot of background that I'm not aware of, and it's a testament to the author's skill that a good portion of that comes through without having to spend huge swaths of text reiterating those points.

I find myself intensely curious about the zombies themselves and just how exactly they came to be as they are (some are as much as ten feet tall, and others seem to have adapted to existence in the water).

The climax of the story actually takes up around a quarter of the novel, which was phenomenal. Rather than a single massive engagement there are several epic battles that make up the climax of the story. Major characters are lost, while others rise to the occasion. There are shocking twists and turns along the way.

Although not everything is final (you can't just get rid of a world full of zombies, after all), the ending brings us a very satisfying conclusion to what is clearly an epic story full of struggle and conflict.

I'm definitely going to be picking up the other books and doing a reread at some point.

Get it

It's a great read. You really need to start with volume one for the full story , though. That said , it will keep you reading for days. Caution , there's a lot of darkness in these books

Loved the entire series!

I’ve read the entire Apocalypse Crusade and Generation Z series. Each one is better than the last. Hopefully, Jillybean adventures and conquests continue.

Nice and tidy

Peter Meredith knows how to write. He spins a story, giving the reader ownership of a fallen world where they can root for one side and seethe when the other side seems to gain an upper hand.

The character development beginning on book 1 page 1 and wording at the end shows that Meredith understands the human condition and how hard this world becomes.

Read this series. You won't be disappointed.

Loved it!

I have loved all of Peter Meredith’s book, the apocalypse ones especially. How he can come up with so many diverse personalities and spin such a suspenseful wild story is amazing. One note on this one, typos. I don’t recall any in previous books, but one has quite a few.

This series is one of my favorites

Because of this series, I started reading more of Peter Meredith's work. I'm so glad to have discovered him because he had become one of my favorite authors. I recommend this as well as the series which occurs 11 years prior (the Undead World). Be ready to encounter some amazing characters

Awesome series

This review is for the entire Generation Z series, one of the best I've read. Jillybean is an amazing, complex character. After reading all the stories since she was a child I'm sad to see it end. I've suffered with her and the rest of the characters only to reach a very satisfying conclusion.

A perfect ending to a phenomenal series...

Generation Z, Book 6 (The Queen Unchained) by Peter Meredith and narrated by Brian Callanan is a wild, dark ride to the end of the series. I recommend if you have been following this series from the beginning. If you are new to it, start with book one. It’s a brilliant, twisted zompoc world that is a must listen!

What’s it about? Keeping it short and spoiler free- the summary does a great job at what to expect. Jillybean struggles throughout, previous characters make a return, violence, struggles for power, The Black Captain, and more. I can’t say it enough- if you have been following this series, this is a must listen.

The narrator, Brian Callanan, does a wonderful job on all the books- his character voices are excellent, pacing good, and he’s easy-to-listen to.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: Similar to the other books- adult themes, dark themes, and not for the faint of heart.

*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!

The Queen Unchained

I don't care what Peter Meredith writes, he Always pulls you in so deep, that you come up gasping for air and realize that there went another night with very little sleep. Talk about Immersion!! Like Quicksand, your quickly and totally sucked i to an alternate universe.
Go Forth and Enjoy

Was another great series

I really hope that that this is not Jilybeans last adventure or should I now say Julian I have been reading these books for years now and I have never truly loved a character as mush as her I really hope that peter Meredith is able to keep writing more to this story one day I will be patient and I will never give up hope that these adventures will be continued as much as I have enjoyed his other books and all the other zombie novels by other authors there is nothing likes these adventures and there is certainly nothing like Jillybean anywhere I to keep reading about her adventures one day thank you for the excellent read

Finale

Couldn't be more happy with the ending.
Only detail I would like changed was for Jillybean to have someone to love her, not just Jenn but another Stu, I was so sad to see him go.
I wanted more suffering detail on the Corsairs but I'm satisfied that their leader finally got what he deserved.
Guess I also wanted to know that Jillybean ended somewhere nice and not going crazy with Eve taking over and doing stupid things, like killing babies.
Thanks so much to Mr. Meredith for coming back with more Jillybean for us addicts. Look forward to the next series!!

Good-bye, my Queen...

A fine conclusion to a series that was hard to read. Not that it wasn't good, au contraire! That spin-off was darker, bloodier, gorier and "psychopather" then the first adventures of Jillybean! I will miss her a lot, since she's one of the best post-apocalyptic character I ever met! May she come back someday, on a shiny day... ;)

It's official: Jillybean/Jillian is by far my favorite literary character of all time. Great wrap up to a long tale that started with The Undead World. Just wish that SM had been there at the end (in person).
