About the author

Jaume Cabré i Fabré (Barcelona, 1947) is a philologist and Catalan writer.

Graduated in Catalan Philology by the University of Barcelona, high-school professor in leave of absence and teacher to the University of Lleida, member of the Philological Section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

During many years he has combined literary writing with teaching. He has also worked in the television and cinematographic scripting. With Joaquim Maria Puyal he was the creator and scriptwriter of the first Catalan television series: La Granja (1989-1992), after which followed other titles like Estació d'Enllaç (1994-1998), Crims (2000) and the tvmovies La dama blanca (1987), Nines russes (2003) and Sara (2003). He has also written, together with Jaume Fuster, Vicenç Villatoro and Antoni Verdaguer, the script of the Antoni Verdaguer's films La teranyina (1990), based on his novel, and Havanera (1993).

Jaume Cabré to jeden z moich ulubionych pisarzy, chociaż ciągle nie trafiłem na jego utwór, który by dorastał powieści "Wyznaję". Ta książka też nie dorasta. Chociaż bez wątpienia czyta się ją z wielką przyjemnością.

To jest zbiór opowiadań, które - podobnie jak "Podróż zimowa" - się w różny sposób ze sobą wiążą. Opowiadania są lekko kryminalne. W ten czy inny sposób opowiadają o zabójstwach, mordercach, zemście, nienawiści... a wszystko to w specyficznym dla Cabré nastroju ironicznego dystansu.

To jest świetna literatura, chociaż podobnie jak w przypadku "Podróży.." miałem wątpliwość: o czym tak naprawdę jest ta książka? To są bardzo ciekawe historie, doskonale napisane, bo dbałość o formę (jak zwykle świetne tłumaczenie) to znak rozpoznawczy tego autora. Ale trudno mi było się wyzbyć wrażenia, że te opowiadania są tylko literackimi wprawkami, ćwiczeniami, intelektualną zabawą, bez głębszej treści.

Tak czy inaczej - zdecydowanie warte polecenia. (Chociaż "Wyznaję" pozostaje niedoścignionym ideałem).

To już nie "Wyznaję", ale Cabre nadal mnie urzeka. Bardzo podobało mi się połączenie opowiadań powracającymi motywami czy bohaterami, czasem bardziej a niekiedy mniej wprost. Dobrze wyszła też zabawa z samą formą, jak w przypadku rozdziału w formie dialogu czy często wykorzystywanej szkatułkowości. Gwiazdkę jedną zabrałem przez to, że zabrakło tu dla mnie wyraźniejszej i w jakiś sposób odkrywczej treści stojącej za opowiadaniami. Przez tekst się płynie, ale niestety równie szybko wypływa.

Aquests contes porten el segell de qualitat que suposa l'estar escrits per Jaume Cabré, i és que tenen la intensitat i la llibertat narrativa que caracteritzen la seva literatura. Són contes que d'alguna manera tenen punts de contacte i estan interrelacionats, molt centrats en l'art i les motivacions més fosques de les persones. Però els que esperin estar davant d'un llibre a l'altura de les grans novel·les de Cabré haurien de rebaixar les expectatives. Són contes simples, que juguen i entretenen però, al meu parer, no t'atrapen i no tenen aquella complexitat que Cabré ha demostrat a altres llibres. Si fos amic de l'autor li diria que està bé, molt bé, però deixa de jugar i posa't a treballar en la teva nova novel·la.

"En aquell moment, no es va saber preguntar per què les histories de la vida s'acaben sempre amb la mort, com si no hagués cap altre possible final de totes le coses."

Y es que todos los relatos tienen como eje central a la muerte que todo lo sentencia, pero cada uno es diferente en su estilo, los hay violentos, fantasiosos o en forma de monólogo y muchos de ellos relacionados entre sí. Como me ha pasado con todo libro de relatos que he leido, los hay mejores y peores. Pero en su conjunto me ha gustado bastante, aunque prefiera mil veces al Cabré de las novelas largas.

De los relatos destaco "Poldo" (el pagés roba ovejas), "Buttubatta" (con un narrador muy especial), "Les mans de Mauk" (literatura dentro de literatura) y "L'Ebre" (sobre la Guerra Civíl y para mí el más triste de todos)

Por último destacar el gustazo que da leer un libro en catalán de este hombre, es que te quedas con la boca abierta con el lenguaje y las palabras ¡qué delicia!

"Qaranlıq düşəndə" on üç hekayədən ibarətdir. Bütün hekayələr demək olar ki, yeddi böyük günaha, həmin günahları törədənlərə, hansısa bir şəkildə həmin günahların içinə düşənlərə həsr olunub. Fərqli mövzularda qələmə alınan hekayələri incəsənətə, xüsusilə rəssamlığa sıx bağlılığı, xana-xana oyunundakı kimi bir hekayədən digərinə hoppanan qəhrəmanlar, ən əsası ölümün absurd yaxınlığı birləşdirir. Və mən bu ölüm-dirim oyununandan böyük zövq aldım. Ən çox isə "Toplanış nöqtəsi" və "Ebro" adlı hekayələri oxuyanda gözlərim parladı.

"Toplanış nöqtəsi" adının haqqını verir: digər hekayələri bir yerə toplayır, oxucuya özünü müdrik xəfiyyə kimi hiss etdirir.

A minha primeira leitura de Jaume Cabré e fiquei marcada pela positiva.
Colectânea de contos bastante sombrios sobre assassinos, mas tão estranhos e obscuros e me prenderam desde a primeira página. Alguns contos entrecruzam-se, mas podem ler-se de forma isolada.
Sinto que muitas destas histórias irão andar comigo durante uns tempos.

Uwielbiam Cabrégo, więc taki mocno tematyczny zbiorek opowiadań o mordercach to jednak rozczarowanie. Większość czytałem bez większego zaangażowania, bo też wybitnie nie jestem czytelnikiem kryminałów. Oczywiście styl autora jest niepodrabialny i nawet w takiej formie cieszy, tym bardziej że opowiadania, jak Znikający punkt, Ebro czy Tezeusz potrafiły mnie jednak mocniej zainteresować.

Przeczytałem wszystko, co zostało na ten moment przetłumaczone, teraz nie pozostaje mi nic innego, jak wrócić się do początku i przeczytać ponownie Wyznaję.

Sempre és un plaer llegir en Cabré. Tot i la dificultat del conte, una disciplina que pocs escriptors dominen, aconsegueix un gran resultat, entretingut i de gran qualitat. Curiosament se situa en una zona grisa entre la col·lecció de contes sense relació entre ells i el llibre de contes que estan entrellaçats. Quan arriba la penombra té les dues coses, una temàtica, un fil conductor de molts contes, que no és un, sinó diversos -la mort, el crim, la pintura i el pas de la realitat al quadre, etc.- i contes orfes. N'hi ha de millors i de més lleugers, de llargs i de curts, però cap no defrauda. Havent llegit darrerament un parell de contistes joves que m'havien avorrit sobiranament, he redescobert el plaer per un tipus d'escriptura que diria molta gent que pertany obligatòriament a la literatura en llengua anglesa.

Primera incursió a l'obra de Cabré. He volgut començar pels seus contes per veure si em convenceria a les distàncies llargues. I crec que sí, perquè en els relats més llargs demostra una narrativa i uns personatges excel·lents i en canvi he vist que en els relats més curts fluixeja una mica més, sobretot potser perquè la història no m'acaba de fer el pes. Do zbiorów opowiadań zawsze podchodzę niepewnie. Bo często może być tak, że spośród wielu tak różnych spodoba mi się zaledwie pare i jak wtedy mam się odnieść do całości? Nijak. W tym przypadku poziom tekstów był raczej równy, wiadomo niektóre zapadły mi w pamięć bardziej, ale nie było wyraźnych niżów czy wyżów. Oczekiwałam jednak czegoś bardziej namiętnego. Racja, wszystkie te historie były niekonwencjonalne, dziwne. Ale nie były rozedrgane, nie były dramatyczne, na tyle mroczne bym musiała przerywać lekturę. A tego chciałam, naprawdę chciałam. Jednak ciężko znaleźć coś doskonałego, dlatego jako krótkie opowiadania powiązane wieloma cienkimi nićmi polecam ten zbiór. Traktuje on o mordercach, ich motywach i często o sztuce.

Un recueil de nouvelles de Jaume Cabré. Des récits autour de criminels sans morale. Des histoires sordides et cocasses. Je suis sortie un peu déstabilisée par cette lecture après avoir été éblouie par son Confiteor, je ne m'attendais pas à ce genre de lecture. Mais c'est aussi le propre des grands auteurs de savoir se renouveler et d'exceller dans différentes formules. Le hic ici, c'est que j'apprécie peu ce genre d'atmosphère en littérature. Sans être un amateur d'histoires à l'eau de rose, je préfère tout de même un climat moins malsain.

Dans ce livre, le plus laid de l'hommerie est étalé avec perversité. C'est le lien entre chacune des nouvelles. L'auteur nous révèle d'ailleurs en postface qu'il s'exerce justement à réunir ensemble des sujets qui résonnent entre eux pour composer sa publication.

Vous comprendrez que mon évaluation concerne davantage le propos que la qualité de l'écriture...

Ja se sap, en Jaume Cabré escriu com déu. He disfrutat la lectura d'aquest llibre de contes curts, que com l'autor explica en l'epíleg son petits divertimentis que van sorgint de tant en tant. Com altres grans mestres amb una frase, amb una línea, es capaç de canviar-te el rumb de la narració. Com diu un dels seus personatges se sent déu creant i fent evolucionar les persones i situacions. Gran sentit de l'humor, negre en aquest cas.
Una adversativa, un però. Les històries curtes, una darrera l'altra, embafen. I tendeixes a comparar, potser aquesta és millor que l'altra. Totes son bones, cal dosificar. Com deia en Chumy Chumez a la Codorniz, si publiques dos acudits molt bons un al costat de l'altra, sempre un serà millor (i l'altra pitjor).

Aquest llibre em té l'opinió dividida. Per una banda, Cabré és un mestre de l'estil i la correcció lingüística. Sap on ficar cada mot, com construir un text, com jugar amb les paraules i el seu significat.
Però, per l'altra banda, les històries no acaben d'atrapar. Són repetitives, sense massa interès de fons, la interacció entre elles —com en la trama dels quadres— no acaba de fluir fins al darrer dels contes i no és precisament aquesta trama el que el fa interessant.
Aleshores, tot i la perfecció de l'autor no és un llibre al qual em quedin ganes de tornar.

Jaume Cabré jeden z najważniejszych pisarzy mojego życia, którego proza zachwyca i trafia prosto do serca. Udowodnił swą wirtuozerię słowa w opaśnym Wyznaję, potem w Głosach Panamo oraz w kolejnych powieściach. Każda z nich jest niezwykła i niepowtarzalna, dotyka tego, co najboleśniejsze dla człowieka, a co siedzi w głowie i sercu. Teraz natomiast przyszła pora opowiedzieć o motywach zbrodni, kto zabija i dlaczego, a przede wszystkim poznać tego najwybitniejszego współczesnego pisarza na nowo, tym razem w krótkiej formie, jaką jest opowiadanie. W Kiedy zapada mrok Cabré ponownie zabiera czytelnika w krainę ciemnej natury ludzkiej.

Kiedy zapada mrok absolutnie nie stanowi literatury kryminalnej, w typowym popowym rozumieniu tego gatunku. To coś znacznie więcej, coś bardziej wysublimowanego i nieuchwytnego na pierwszy rzut oka. Wkracza do świata zbrodni, ale w sposób psychologiczny. Obserwuje morderców. Okoliczności popychające je do odebrania życia drugiemu człowiekowi, odsłania myśli i uczucia zabójcy, a przede wszystkim sam akt zabójstwa i wszystko, to co dzieje się po nim staje się momentem, w którym jakby świat wstrzymał oddech. Czynem nagłym, gwałtownym, odciskającym swe piętno na sprawcy, ofierze i jej bliskich. Każda z tych zbrodni jest inna, różnią się one motywem, mordercy też są różni. Do ich grona wszedł chłopiec cierpiący z powodu braku ojcowskiej miłości a potem molestowany przez wychowawców sierocińca, ale znajdują się wśród nich również ludzi kultury: pisarze, czy malarze. Każde opowiadanie jest niepowtarzalne i udowadnia, że wejście człowieka w mrok jest nagłe, stanowi chwilę, po której nie ma już drogi odwrotu. Czynniki popychające do zbrodni natomiast od wieków są te same: zemsta, zazdrość, albo pazerność. Przed naszymi oczami staje galeria nędzników, ludzi poranionych przez życie, albo tych którzy z powodów różnych zbiegów okoliczności, sami stali się mordercami. Wszyscy oni zaś są wiecznymi tułaczami wędrującymi w mroku, w świecie wyzutym z wszelkiego dobra.

Kiedy zapada mrok to Cabré w pigułce. Zawiera w sobie wszystko to, czym proza tego katalońskiego pisarza zachwyca. Mamy echa wojny domowej i odgłosy z dyktatury gen. Franco, mamy ludzką podłość, małość, egoizm, narcyzm, dążenie do zemsty i wyrównanie rachunku krzywd. Obserwujemy ludzkie cierpienie, pragnienie miłości i zło dotykające nawet tych najbardziej niewinnych, dzieci. Nie mające granic okrucieństwo i bestialstwo ujęte w niezwykły, charakterystyczny tylko dla Jaume sposób. Jest to za pomocą wyrafinowanych słów malowanie obrazu, scenerii zdarzenia, oddawania wszystkich towarzyszących mu dźwięków, zapachów i mrocznego klimatu. Tutaj jako pierwsza umiera nadzieja, a później jest już tylko pustka, bezsens, zemsta nie dająca szczęścia ale popychająca jeszcze głębiej w ciemność, od której nie sposób się uwolnić. O ile jeszcze w Wyznaję, w Cieniu eunucha, albo w Agonii dźwięków pojawiali się ludzie będący iskierkami dobra migającymi na tle mrocznego nieba, to w Kiedy zapada mrok ich nie ma, przez co jest to jedna z najbardziej smutnych i najbardziej przygnębiających książek tego autora, ale mimo wszystko plasująca się wśród moich ulubionych tytułów. Czytelnik po lekturze czuje się stłamszony, pobity, całkowicie rozbity emocjonalnie. Często opowiadania te czytamy ze łzami w oczach, ale ciągle chcemy więcej, chcemy dalej poznawać życiowych rozbitków wkraczających we wszechogarniający mrok. Ludzi tych nie potępiamy, ale im współczujemy. Rozumiemy ich pobudki. Bohaterowie zmagają się z własną noszoną w sercu traumą. Jej źródło jest różne: odrzucenie i latami znoszone molestowanie ze strony pedofila, niezrealizowane ambicje, zdrada przyjaciół itp. To ludzie zmagający się z życiem i własnym cierpieniem. Szukający dróg wyzbycia się trawiącego ich od środka bólu. Autor udowadnia, że każdy bez wyjątku może w przeciągu ułamka sekundy wejść na drogę zbrodni, po której nie zawsze czeka kara.

Każdy kto sięga po twórczość Jaume Cabré musi przygotować się na ekstremalną wyprawę w głąb, tego co w ludzkiej duszy jest mroczne. To wkraczanie w świat ludzkiej psychiki i emocji bez żadnego ostrzeżenia, tutaj musimy być przygotowani na wszystko. Na oszczędny język, z których jednocześnie pochodzi wiele głosów. Tu nie ma zbędnych słów, ale każde z nich potrafi szokować i wprawiać w osłupienie. Nieustannie balansujemy między światem żywych a umarłych, między rzeczywistością a iluzja. W opowiadanych historiach każdy ma prawo zabrać głos, nawet książka może opowiedzieć o tym, czego była świadkiem. Równocześnie nie brakuje u niego tekstów humorystycznych i ironicznych, bez których budowana konsekwentnie przez autorka atmosfera, byłaby nie do wytrzymania. To idealna pozycja zarówno dla fanów Katalończyka, jak i dla tych, którzy swoją przygodę z nim postanawiają dopiero rozpocząć.

If I was to define this collection of short stories I would describe it as a collection of writings with common themes, made as an intellectual stunt and for practice. All of the stories included had some clever ideas. Nonetheless, some were better executed then others. The quality of writing is uneven throughout this book as author clearly experiments with different writing styles and often flirts with somewhat impressionistic way of storytelling which I’m not very fond off. I couldn’t however, consider this a flow as every one of the stories was intriguing or just pleasant to read. And so even if some stylistic adventures undertaken by the writer didn’t quite match my taste I still enjoyed if not the plot then the experiment itself. Common theme of crime helps to tie this book into a coherent piece. If not for that it would just seem as “things I found in my drawer - the book” (drawer of a writer must be a wonderful place!). I must also say that there were some stories in this book which I consider absolutely brilliant and that took me by heart. I recommend this book for sunny afternoons and comfy evenings.

Libro de relatos de Jaume Cabré. Todos los relatos tienen un punto en común con el crimen como protagonista y algunos personajes que aparecen como invitados en historias ajenas.
Están presentes los recursos narrativos que dan carácter a todas las obras de este autor los saltos temporales, diálogos que son más bien monólogos paralelos.
Jaume Cabré nunca deja indiferente.

Després de l’extraordinari i merescut èxit de Jo confesso el 2011, Jaume Cabré no havia tornat a publicar narrativa de ficció. Sí que havia publicat l’assaig Les incerteses el 2015 sobre els processos creatius i els gustos culturals. Fins aquest Sant Jordi, quan ha retornat al relat breu, deu anys després de Baix continu, el que havia estat el seu darrer llibre de relats. Sí bé és cert que el públic potser demanava una altra novel·la al nivell de la protagonitzada per l’Adrià Ardèvol, el que ens ha ofert Cabré és una nova mostra de capacitat creativa i de domini de la narrativa que sembla impossible que deixi ningú descontent.

Mam mocno mieszane uczucia.
Artyzmu i mistrzowskiego posługiwania się piórem nie można Cabre odmówić.
Natomiast, opowiadania w tym zbiorze są mocno nierówne.
Do połowy byłam zachwycona. Absurd w niektórych opowiadaniach zwalił mnie z nóg albo absolutnie zaskoczył.
Po pewnym czasie jednak zaczęło mnie to nużyć. Opowiadaj jest dużo. Dużo postaci. Po jakimś czasie już zaczęło mi się to mieszać i zaczęłam gubić wątek.
Podobało mi się ale troszkę musiałam się pod koniec zmusić do lektury.

Jaume Cabré, an already recognized master of European prose, offers the reader in his collection "When Darkness Comes" not just a series of stories, but an artfully assembled kaleidoscope of human vices, where each turn reveals a new facet of the darkness lurking in human souls. As the title promises, the book immerses one in a world where death is not a tragic accident, but rather a caustic mocker, a character with a dark sense of humor who cannot be outwitted.

For me, this was my first encounter with Cabré's work, and perhaps a short story collection is not the most obvious way to get to know a writer. However, this "initial foray" was far from a failure; instead, it proved to be an excellent starting point. Despite the weightiness of the themes explored, the stories are written in a deceptively light, almost airy style, which makes reading engaging and the shocking events even more stark by contrast.

Cabré explores the nature of evil from various angles, using a shift in perspective as his primary tool. We see the world through the eyes of an unloved child whose life is derailed by an indifferent father, triggering a chain reaction of tragedy. We delve into the twisted logic of a professional hitman who proudly discusses his "craft," considering murder a creative act requiring methodicalness and inspiration. He doesn't consider himself a psychopath — after all, he appreciates painting and is capable of empathy (as he believes), which only underscores the chilling banality of evil. Alongside this are stories of a cattle rustler, a serial killer, a grief-stricken father and husband, and many others.

But for me, the main pleasure of this collection lies not in the individual stories, but in how they weave into a single tapestry. This is a true intellectual delight for the attentive reader. Suddenly, you realize that a crime scene from one novella was already mentioned in another. An artist or a work of art, briefly noted in one story, becomes key in the next.
