Upon her mother's death in 1902, twenty-one-year-old Alfreda Esmond turns the family home into a boarding house that attracts a highly eccentric collection of boarders
I see everyone who has read this loved it. Well, The Revolt of Sarah Perkins is one of my favorite books from my youth, I recently re-read it and it still held up. I had never found another of Marian Cockrell's books before, and got this one online. It was a perfectly nice little story, but I never really engaged with it for some reason. It had a hint here and there of the wit of "Sarah" but the story was just very predictable. A Perky Young Woman in 1902 is left in financial straits after the death of her mother, and is forced to turn her home into a boarding house. Cue the eccentric motley crew of boarders. Cue a perfect man to eventually "save" her from having to have boarders....wait... PYW already HAS a rich, charming, handsome boyfriend, but....he is...wishy-washy! That means a more perfect man is due, and sure enough...here he comes, cue crisis with the boyfriend...etc. etc. Ho hum. I would have probably loved this when I was 14.
