This was supposed to be a journey to find his dream of starting his own spread. As he left the Bar L just northwest of Cheyenne and rode south into Colorado, Conn already knew where he wanted to build his ranch and had enough money to buy the land and get it started. It was just a hundred mile ride through open country. What could possibly go wrong?

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Started off really slow seemed to be a boring same-o, same-o, but picked up in town with introducing “Sam”, I got a kick out of her,(after she quit stuttering) the computer reading the stories has terrible recognition of the words. One time it’s one thing and next time, same word different pronunciation, kind of ruins the reading of the story, very distracting but all in all I did enjoy the story, love scenes were very moving 😛🤗💕🤭those “cold water baths in the stream are a killer “ been there done that In olden days . 😂 hahaha Onward C.J.

Every once in a while you want to read a Western - to sort of cleanse the pallette. Then when you finish the Western - you say to yourself - From now on, I'm going to have a sorbet to cleanse my pallette. This story follows the old - I'm going home after the Civil War to see my brother - my brother really married a hot wife - my brother's town has been taken over by scoundrels - I happen to be good a killing people so I'll clean up the town - good gawd my brother is in cohoots with these scoundrels and is also beating his wife - blah blah blah.

I can't read any more of these stories.

The book begins very slow. Νο smell, no landscape descriptions just a few name drops. For a reader who isn’t familiar with American lands, this is strictly disappointing. The action scenes are so badly written that the author puts the protagonist to explain us on the following paragraphs what he did. As long as to show off, how brilliant and macho the protagonist is. The whole book is advertising guns. I learnt about Winchesters and Colts and what is the best gun for a woman, as if the writer gets secretly money to promote them.
Conn speaks to Samantha as if she is retarded. The writer just drops names without even slightly develop the characters. Cj Pettit names his character Conn after Emperor Constantine and he certainly points it out so many times, to show as that he knows history? To show that his perfect character knows history? The irony is that Emperor Constantine was a murderer before the Church turned him into saint.
Furthermore there is only one sex scene almost at the end of the book and it is so prude. “He pleased her, and he pleased him and he was frenzy and she was frenzy” and C.J. Petit doesn’t know any other adjectives.
The plot is unconstructed and the writer emphasizes the same information on and on as if it is a Greek soap opera. So much ink for events that happened in just three days. There is no backstory, no developed characters, not a valid reasoning upon their acts.

Conn Jackson

Again CJP wrote a story that I hadn't really considered before , the coming of the railroads. Conn had saved his money to be able to buy the canyon to make his home there. However, since the land was really sold illegally, the railroad thought that they could take his home. Just shows you, they didn't know Conn Jackson. After all, he's the man who cleaned up the town of Buffalo before the railroad even got there. This was a 👍👍 great read!!!! Absolutely one of the best from CJP, bound to be one of my favorites. 👏BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO 👏👏 Thank You CJP for setting the standard so high for great westerns that always reach me something about those times that I'd never thought about before. I hope you keep them coming.

RAILROAD, RANCHES, SALOON GIRLS, GUNS

This 5 STARS exciting old western era drama explodes after a minute with a bank robbing, towns people shot, deputy murdered by 3 of the worst outlaws in that part of the country; or indeed anywhere. Then, they tangle with Conn on their way out of town, his way in & he was lucky enough to get all 3. This book earned 1 whole star if not 2 just on the storyline of these 3 bank robbers & Conn; when all 3 outlaws were down the conversation between Conn & 1 of them was a 5 star conversation to me; I just loved it. I smiled, plus laughed out loud. Now, this just wets your reading spirit for more to come and it's action, exciting, some parts & characters are disgusting but all of it is real and raw. For some people this may be to gritty & raw like when Conn's brother slapped his wife in front of their 3 young children, then had the 2 strangers he was with to grab her and said you are going to town to whore at saloon, and ( their young son) Fred, is going to go tell his uncle Conn. Fred, tell him Beds is going to do the same thing as Sam's mother; just walk up until you see the canyon & trees then start yelling his name. (About 2 miles) This intriguing action piece is just one that happened to clean up the corruption that held a grip on the childhood town where Conn had went to church & bought supplies growing up. Now, the good people didn't have guns or cash anymore; they were being bullied by men that other towns considered low life bad men. It is a wonderful story and you don't want to miss it or the reason all 5 saloon working girls ended up dressed very demure sitting in the front pew. Not to mention that Sam was wearing her baggy pants & large flannel shirt when they got married; while at the alter after the final kiss, Sam's pants were ripped from her and fell to the floor as Sam.......WOW! At the front of the church, too. Are you still wondering why I gave it 5 STARS? You need to read it yourself to flesh out the rest, find out what cured Sam's stuttering the most . The RR was in the process of building the tracks to get a tracking from East coast to West coast. Conn knew they were probably going to give him grief over the price he paid for his canyon; however he also figured they had laid track accross his ranch without ever getting a right away and that is another great sequence to smile with.
So, you can either take Deputy Conn, who was an unpaid deputy that was there to help the sheriff, and like this laid back, but hard working horse loving cow man or not but read;
Conn Jackson By C.J. Petit
before you decide & please don't let the reviews keep you from reading a book; what you enjoy & the reviewer can always be as different as night & day. Also, sometimes I love some books that at other times, in other frames of minds or moods I would never choose that type of book So remember it's your appetite it's ok to try different interesting areas & on every menu there is usually some delicacies.

I never grow tired of C. J. Petit's superb writing abilities, as he is such an imaginative author. This so is definitely one of his best and there is enough romance and gunplay to pacify the most demanding critic's endearing interests. Too, I was definitely mesmerized throughout the entire book, as it was exciting anticipating what Mr. Petit would delve into for his next entertaining adventure!

Giving five stars without any hesitation. A well researched and superb written masterpiece by an exceptionally talented author. I, as always, continue to follow Mr. Petit's books, never reading a bad I one.
There is ongoing adventures and gunfights throughout the entire story, enough I didn't put aside until the final word was read. The character selections were effectively initiated and their assignments were definitely descriptive. Too, Mr. Petit's storylines have always been very impressive. This time he managed to outdo any of his previous releases.
I, most definitely, recommend this book, and all other releases by Mr. Petit, as I am sure you will be as impressed as I have been. There is exciting romance, gunfights and superb adventures throughout this entire book. If you like a family-friendly story, then this is an excellent example for you to read another great western extravaganza. To not follow Mr. Petit's books is definitely your loss!

NO MORE STUTTERING

A young girl and her mother no means of support other than the mother working as a soiled dove on her own. In other words, she worked out of her shack, charging less than the soiled doves who worked the local saloon. As the young girl grew older and developed into a curvaceous young lady, the mother cut her hair and dressed her in boys clothing. This was done for protection, but that still didn't stop the bullies of the town which included the grown-ups. Her mother succumbed to the bad treatment she endured working as an independent soil dove, the last male visitor beat her so badly that she told her daughter Sam, that he must have busted her up internally and that she was dying.
This author writes beautiful stories, western dramatic love plots. The characters bring tears to your eyes and others you want to slap side their heads. There's still love, compassion and the determination to make a good life for themselves and their future children. I think that these are lovely to read and it's not all kill, desertion, but it's part of all the plots of this author. Love and companionship, happiness, trust and above all respect for each other, especially the women in those days who weren't treated any better than the animal stock, no voice regarding their futures. A great lifetime western to read and enjoy.

Conn had enough money saved to purchase his own ranch in a remembered canyon near his brother's ranch. Before Conn reached the town of Buffalo he learned that the town was controlled by criminals. He was sworn as a deputy and set out to free the town from criminals. He was stunned to learn that his brother hated him but that didn't deter him from setting up a rustic home in the canyon. On his first trip to Buffalo he rescued a young child, Sam, from bullies. Later he learned that Sam was actually Samantha. Conn was harassed by the Buffalo criminals and he overcame them one at a time despite his brother's siding with the evil men. Conn and Samantha soon fell in love while he worked to support his sister-in-law and her children. When the villains were overcome, his brother had been killed by them and the town was free of the criminal element. The town was restored to a friendly town, his sister-in-law married the local pastor and Samantha had blossomed into a lovely and supportive person. He rescued the soiled doves and gave them money from the previous owner so that they could have their own lives. Conn was a moral person who was able to make changes in his life and those around him. Sam and Conn took over his brother's ranch and lived well together.

To Be Honest...

.... I haven't even read more than a few pages of this one yet. If the author remains as prolific as he's so far proven to be, I doubt I'll Ever quite catch up - fortunately! May you always stay ahead of me, C.J.!
But I got to thinking about the period of time in which your tales are set... There was so much misery that was particular to those years yet, while you certainly acknowledge it, your focus always remains on what is both good and noble in the nature of humans (and animals:).
I have greatly enjoyed every story, and confess that I'm the one who occasionally goes on a Kindle proofreading binge along the way - but only to make the stories as typographically perfect as they already are in the telling!;)
You are a bright oasis in my life - thank you!

Just another really good story by C J Petit.

The beginning pages of this book were great, a real surprise. But what more can you expect? Well, a lot more. And C J Petit delivers, in spades.
Conn Jackson rides into the town of Buffalo and sees two town bullies roughing up a small boy .
S-stuttering S-S-Sammy is the butt of name calling and more, but no one will dare to step in to stop it.
Conn does and takes the boy with him on his journey out of town. Soon he finds to his surprise, Sammy is not a boy, but very much older girl with short cropped hair and a dirty face.
Now this new story is off and galloping along. And it doesn't slow down until the last page.
Read and enjoy.

C.J. Petit books are addicting. This is the 7th. I have read. Always my favorite American West author.

Every character that C.J. Petit introduced in Conn Jackson, from Conn himself and of course Sam, to the bad guys and there were several, we're realistic and Entertaining. I think this book was one of my favorites so far. The book has a little bit of every type of personality, Ranchers, Bankers, Sheriff, Deputies, Mothers, and Fathers. Even some Painted Ladies that tear at your heart. I will be reading more of C.J. Petit for sure.

Love

I truly enjoyed this book. The characters seem realistic. It seems there is a balance of good and evil, right and wrong. This is a fine story with love and morals. I am pleased with this book and am now looking for the next one I will read by this author. Lastly, for now, I want to say thank you to Mr Petit for writing these books, also to his daughter for encouraging him to let us read his stories. In addition, thank you for keeping the price of your books as low as possible, thereby making them easy to buy.

Fine Read

C.J. I have now read a number of your books and I thoroughly enjoy how you develop your story lines and keep your characters fresh. I am amazed at how quickly you put them out. I am pleased that you are going back and cleaning up your early ones. I was a proof reader for a monthly international magazine for 4 years and was seriously bothered by the word errors, extra or missing words, and I appreciate your clean up. It makes reading much more pleasant! Keep up the good work.

Loved the love in this story

Many of Mister Petit's stories have love weaving through them. For me this is one if the things that make them so good to read. Another is that the love, while maybe starting with caution, becomes deep and withstanding without compromise or confliction. Is this real? I don't know. It seems uncommon in the stories we find in everyday relations we find nowadays. In the time of the 1800s in the emerging American West, with all its challenges just to survive, it may not have been so complicated with nuance, but was rather a necessity.

Surprised by chance

Another excellent presentation by Mr. Petit to add to his lengthy list of works that are all well worth your reading efforts.
He actually involves his readers in his character's lives to the point that it's virtually impossible to put down each novel.
Well written, highly believable , and fluidly flowing plots are his trademark, and any of his works are more than worthy of your time.

Very Calm

It might seem strange, but the word that describes C.J. Petit books for me is "Calming". His stories are never boring, always interesting, and calming. I suffer from fibromyalgia, I can't just lay down and go to sleep. I need time for my body to relax my muscles so I can call asleep. I Read and C.J. Petit is one of my favourite author. Like I said his stories are so good they calm me. I never get tired of his stories.

Enjoyable read here. Conn comes to town to buy land an make things better with his insecure brother. Must deal with some hard cases who are controlling the town while fleecing its citizens. First order is to rescue a bullied stuttering woman who poses as a young boy to protect herself from the worst. Here's a tale laden with arrogance, compassion, and recovery. Inspiring to anyone who can relate to abuse or bullying at the hands of the heartless. PKB

A Western About a Small Town Run by Criminals

CJP has penned a western about a town run by criminals. The change courts when an Army veteran returns to his home Ranch. He finds and identified the problem and consults the Sheriff at the County Seat and then is made a Deputy Sheriff. His job is to do what he can. This an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Good story. Why do all of them never wait until they are married before they have sex? Every story is the same in that regard.

I enjoy all his stories even though they are basically the same. I have read all of them except one. Can't wait until the next one. Didn't read the witch story. Didn't appeal to me.

Having read Louis Lamour's books, many times, I truly appreciate your attention to character, details of western living, intricate story-line, emphasis on leadership, and quality of life.

Three generations of western story readers are enjoying your books. Thank you for sharing.

Kudos.
Look forward to each new one.

I've never read a bad C.J. Petit book. Since I've read over 30 of them I tend to judge them by his other ones. Most have a hero (Conn) and a heroin (Sam) who usually end up falling for one another. They have ups and downs, shootouts and misunderstandings, until it's finally all resolved and they live happily ever after. Good Book.

Conn Jackson

This was a well written Western adventure. A young man leaves his job to start a ranch next to his brother's spread. Upon arrival he finds the town Marshall was a bully as well as a thief. The Marshall paid a group of thugs to enforce his demands. A Western with lots of detail about this small town in Colorado.

Cowboys

Typical of these books, Conn is more generous with others than himself. An common cowboy who isn't afraid of trying. His savings are based on a lot of doing with less. His brother is typically dumber, more selfish, lazier. And jealous. Not a breathable or father or rancher. A weak male.
