This story is so vivid and realistic, I found myself clenching my teeth from the beginning till end! My jaws were hurting by the time I realized it! Lol. The persecution in the first chapters was mind blowing, kind of reminded me of The Firth Element film, nerve wrecking! I’m fascinated with the creativity and imagination of both Hopper and Chaney. The plot has in depth, a careful and well description of world building, alluring landscapes, intrigue, mysterious ancient alien Artifacts-just what I love- a superb starship, Lars a snarky AI, a powerful villain, a dream team, a witty and humorous dialogue, fast paced, action packed...perfect! And.. so emotive moments, felt a lump in my throat, I couldn’t hold back the tears, it was so heart breaking, I had a hard sleeping afterwards. It has a wonderful combination of what a SciFi story should have, very compelling and unique. I love this team and series! Next stop, Resonant Fortress #3!
Another amazing story!!!! If I haven't said it before I should have by now. Nothing and I mean nothing beats these amazing stories taking place in the Chaney universe!!!
Book two in this series. Flint an ex police officer and Rachael, who Clint later discovers is an ex Union Constable work for a billionaire who likes to collect priceless artifacts. This translates into extremely dangerous missions, non stop action on literally every page. Even though both of their paths are a different career path, especially Rachael they both have similarities in their actions and surprisingly their moral compasses. This is an excellent read! Enjoyed immensely!
Where the first book read like sci-fi Die Hard fans wet dream… the sequel is jokless gray-zone set in the rules of got to to A get item or info and go to B. This book was just slapped on space exploration with no realism to it.
Very well done book, I personally don’t like children in science fiction books.
I enjoyed this book, it was a fast read very snarky humor and great characters especially Rachel AndLars Flint in my opinion is just OK. Even though he is the main protagonist I personally don’t like his personality. Maybe he will grow on me in the next book. This author has a penchant for putting kids in his science fiction books, I personally do not think kids belong in these type of books. That’s just my opinion. But the series so far is interesting enough that I may continue to read it. You may like it, you may not give it a try
This is the second book in the Resonate Son series. If you haven’t read my review of the first book, you can find it here.
Over all, this book was better than the first one, but still one of the weaker entries in Chaney’s catalog.
This book finds Flint and Rachel on a mining planet for the first part of their mission for their benefactor. Of course, things don’t go completely as planned.
We do get to see Flint and Rachel’s relationship develop. And we get to learn a little more about who they are as Characters. In fact, one of the best written parts of the book was how the authors handled the revel of part of Rachel’s back story. Also, as always, for me there were some laugh-out-loud parts.
On the other hand, I had a hard time believing the relationship between Flint and Rachel. If this was a movie, I would say that this was down to bad chemistry between the actors, but this is a book. How do characters in a book have bad chemistry?
If it wasn't a fact that romance between the leads is a common theme in Chaney’s books, I would say he just wasn’t good at it. But, in all the books of his that I have read where this is a minor plot point, he does a pretty good job of it. In this book, not so much. (Maybe they just went from strangers to lovers to quickly.)
The pacing of the book was really good. Chaney and company don’t write particularly long books, but they still move a long very quickly. These are not stories that will change your life, but if you want something that you can devour in one or two settings, these are great.
My major gripe with the first book was that it was really a retelling of Die Hard (with just the names and places changed to protect the innocent). It took me to the very end of the book to realize that the authors had borrowed from another popular story*. (It could be that I didn't catch on because I wasn’t paying attention, but it wasn’t in your face this time.) I will say that the fact that this time it was more subtle (at least from my experience) the cribbing was intentional, making it more of an homage rather than plagiarism. Besides, I decide to give Chaney the benefit of the doubt. (It helps that so many of his series are variations on a theme to begin with.)
I can say that this book is very much action driven. While I think this approach will always limit the depth of your story, though that was not the point of this story, and I don’t necessarily think it's a bad thing. I really think there is a place for books that are just fun.
As an action focused story it was really fun. I did not have the same tension that I had with the first one, but just because I knew that Flint and crew would win, it was exciting seeing how it worked out. It felt like this wanted to be heist story. I would have liked to see Chaney lean into that more, but maybe with the next book. If you liked Resonate Son, then I think you will like this book too. I am excited to see what the next in the series brings.
In the end, I give this a 3 out of 5.
*To prevent spoilers, I have decided to put this note down here. The story that this book borrows from is Dune. This book was about a mine where a powerful and high demand drug was mined. The drug was the result of the ecrement of giant worms. But this is about where the similarities end.
Flint and Rachel are still looking for treasures for Mr. Min Oragga.
They have left Se!!ion City. They stopped in Varadia to get an introduction to Meldorn for their next decisions on how to look for the artifacts. During the time there they get chased and shot at by another set of bad guys. Now they are on their way to Meldorn and more trouble than they realize.
The second story in this series really gives a window into the scope of things to come, and how, once again, it is connected to the rest of the Renegade Universe.
Chaney knows how to write outstanding stories. I love the way each series stands alone yet is interwoven with his other series! These books are the kind you can’t put down. They’re awesome!
Entertaining storyline, good development of characters. Just when you think you understand what’s up the world changes. Give it a read you you will not be disappointed.
I was surprised that I really enjoyed the story. It was a roller coaster of a ride and a bit drama filled, but I find I am looking forward to the next adventure.
