Dean Parker likes to play classic video games. When he found his old console from when he was a kid, he dusts it off and sets it up. He played his old games, but he had finished them all long ago. So, what does he do? He takes a trip to the local game shop to browse the used titles. Browsing the old cartridges, he finds one that he never heard of: Dark Ages: The Death of Magic. When a store attendant tells him that game is rumored to never have been beaten, he had to have it. Occupying all his free time he finally beats the unbeatable game. What happens next, he never would have guessed. He is introduced to the System. Something that has always existed but not everyone knew about. Join Dean as he is introduced to the seedy underbelly of a world where the myths of magic from the past read like history. Joined by his childhood friend, he must survive in a world of magic hidden from everyone. A world that has remained secret through the blood of those who have discovered it. And to top it all off, he discovers that his childhood friend—his best friend—isn’t even human.
This is a great book with some very cool concepts. It blends a lot of the genre with the urban fantasy stuff as well as some new takes that we haven't really seen.
Looking for more development to take place over the next book.
I read a lot of LitRPG. One of the challenges is that the writing style is often amateurish and unskilled. I found this one particularly painful. The author kept switching between present tense and past tense - sometimes in the same sentence. There were editing errors in the stat blocks. None of it boded well for a well-planned and nuanced story line. I bailed after 20 pages.
Good story line. Interesting plot. Amateurish writing. Should get your money back from your editor. So many errors just in word usage or missing words.
Some examples.
waist instead of waste. Week instead of weak. Thee instead of three. He instead or her. Site instead of Sight. Peak instead of peek.
Are just some examples. That and switching tenses, causing whiplash.
Characters, did not feel well developed and plot holes were plentiful.
Was able to get through the whole story. Would read others from author but would not recommend this as other than a LITRPG filler to read if nothing else was available.
This book was a major let down. I find it hard to believe that the author, Thomas Whipple, actual wrote this. Not only does the book keep switching between the present and past tenses, but there are gaping plot holes that I just could not excuse. The very day after the MC gets his ability's his best friend/childhood crush, who apparently has had these ability's her entire life, tells him to stay home. Then the next day she takes him to an underground supernatural market.
I read a lot of Kindle unlimited books. This happens to be one. Quite a few of the Kindle books are poorly edited. I can handle a poorly edited book if the story is good. This book was just poorly written. The conversations in the book were the worst. I actually can't believe I got through the book. Normally I just stop reading and go to another book. So it was good enough to read but in the end I wish I hadn't spent the time reading it.
Not high literature. Pretty good story that longer than the page count might suggest. Felt a bit rushed. It's an interesting assortment of elements from various sources. Gets his power from a game and now sees all the supernatural beings among us. Does a variety of training nd a bit of conflict to liven things up.I Score: 7.9 out of 10
Good story and world building. Liked the main and supporting cast as the grew. Best of all, it's a nicely contained story that leaves you wanting more without resorting to a cliffhanger
Although there could be more character development and information to flesh out of the System world I really enjoyed reading this story and its intetesting mix of litrpg and teen fantasy.
So many of this joundre are based on similar ideas and become just another of the same old storylines . I found this book to be unique and engaging, couldn't put it down , can't wait for the next one .
Fantastic start to a series! Absolutely loved the story and world building that came with it. The characters are great as well, I can't wait to see how they all develop, and what surprises the author has next
At last I Am totally bored with books where the hero has to die to set up the book I do not even read that plot line anymore good luck with your next book
Something of a mashup of magic with fae, katsuna and hidden magical worlds. Story progressed fairly quickly after the explaining beginning. I will look for sequels.
