“I can’t say I wasn’t hoping for it, but I didn’t see it coming.” –Jessi Kirby, Golden
Clean: 7-very-short chapters: there is a definite play on words with the title. I’ve read it several times now and did make the connection right away. Well… that was interesting.
Oh-My-Gosh!! This was wickedly creative. We aren’t given the identity of the couple until way into the chapters. I did not see this reveal coming. The clues began to make sense but I was so shocked I laughed out loud and thought… no, they did not just do that. Hilarious. It started out so somber and then turned on a dime. OMG!! JoanHall is wicked. I highly recommend this shockingly creative spin on Austen’s P&P. I think even DC would approve. You’ll get it when you read it.
1st read 9-3-19 2nd read 2-28-20 [still funny] 3rd read 8-6-21 4th read 4-12-23 you have to wait for it… still funny
I came across this story when trawling through and deleting a lot of old email notifications and nearly didn't click on the link. I'm so glad I did! It's a short story (3000+ words) told in seven chapters, apparently inspired by the author's son and who may even continue it one day.
It's really sad at the beginning as the unnamed wife is thinking over her regrets at not having borne her husband a child after four years of marriage. Then things get turned on their heads by something totally unexpected. I think everyone who's read this will have their assumptions about who the couple are and I had to go back and re-read it to check out my assumptions. The author has been very clever in her writing here. The reveal near the end and the twist in the tail are real doozies!
Great little story that you can read whilst drinking a cup of tea or coffee. Just don't take a sip near the end - you'll be spitting your drink all over the place!
This short story features alternating points of view of a couple who have not been blessed with a child in a world where that is the status symbol for any married woman. As they come to accept their situation, they find a foundling child in the woods.
