It was a night of terror and destruction for the men of Dau Tieng base camp. Two battalions of North Vietnamese Army regulars attacked the camp and broke through the wire, running amok with RPGs and satchel charges. This real battle is portrayed through the eyes of three fictional characters who must survive the night, discovering much about themselves in the process. A young infantry PFC who has just arrived in country must prove himself the hard way, a cynical artillery sergeant must come to terms with the destruction he causes, and a disgraced officer must overcome his many personal problems, all while they fight an enemy who is everywhere around them. This book takes you into the heat of battle, revealing the emotional toll it takes on the men and the courage they display to protect themselves and their fellow soldiers. These are actual harrowing events that you can experience along with the fictional characters, to see what the war was really like for the men who fought it.
I did enjoy reading DELTA TANGO: A VIETNAM WAR NOVEL by David Allin as much as his other two books about the Triple Deuce of the 25th Division. This book focuses on the battle and overrun of Dau Tieng from the perspective of three different characters who were in different parts of the basecamp. It is remarkable how the author after reading after-action reports and feedback from soldiers who were there, was able to write a story in such detail including discussions between characters - that readers might think that he was actually present during the battle. The only reason I didn't give it five-stars was due to the number of typos within the story. I do highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about battles of the Vietnam War and be witness to the bravery of those young soldiers who fought for their lives during a long, fearful night. Great job, Mr. Allin.
As usual the author produces a really good page turner. This has different characters from his Vietnam series, but equally well drawn. The only issue was four or five single word edit errors- easily fixed, easily ignored.
This is the 1st book I've read that mentioned Dau Tieng. I also was in Dau Tieng with the 65th Engineers and arrived there in March 1969. I'm looking forward to reading more books by David Allin.
A very realistic portrayal of combat in Vietnam Nam and a well deserved tribute to those who served. The commentary was communicated on a very personal level allowing the reader to project as he or she was there. Norm
The author continues to keep my interest to the point that I cannot put the book down. He also is able to describe feelings that Viet Nam vets feel during and after combat. Great job!
Fiction of the highest caliber hard to put down. It reads like non fiction with rea!ism that is gripping and scary. You get to know the characters and feel their pains and anquish as well as their triumphs. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
