In the third novel of THE CHRISTMAS EVE series, Eve and Patrick Gantly are living a normal life in 2019 New York, preparing to celebrate the Christmas season. Patrick is taking courses in forensic psychology and Eve continues to work as a nurse practitioner. To their delight, she is three months pregnant.

Despite their happiness, Eve is having premonitions that something dreadful is about to occur. Concerned about the future and the safety of their child, she insists that they destroy the time travel lantern. Patrick is more cautious.

One afternoon when Patrick is out, a sinister man breaks into the apartment and forces Eve to give him the lantern. In many ways, Eve is relieved the lantern is gone. She hopes they can now live a more normal life.

A day later, Patrick shadows a woman who has been staking out the Gantly’s brownstone apartment, and he confronts her. To his and Eve’s utter shock, they learn that Lucy Rose is from 1924 and that she time-traveled with the man who took the lantern. He returned to 1924, but she chose to stay behind. She offers to sell the lantern back to Eve and Patrick, and they reluctantly agree, hoping to keep it out of unscrupulous hands.

Convinced that the lantern is a threat to their future happiness, Eve and Patrick decide to destroy it.

But the lantern has more power than they could have ever imagined. Once the lantern is destroyed, Eve’s life is completely changed. She must set off on an adventure, in a struggle that will return her to the past, where she will learn the secret of the lantern’s origin and delve into the farthest reaches of her heart.

A weaving story of time travel and the true love of a woman was this book. Eve loved Patrick in 2019. Their previous two books had time travel via a lantern. So while destroying the same lantern, in the present time, magic and science amalgamated, creating a wave which caused Patrick to be lost and Eve and best friend Joni to travel back to find him. The year was 1884...

My first book by a husband-wife duo, Elyse Douglas, though third in series, saw me deeply entrenched into the depths of the story. The authors are definitely talented in the way they inject emotions in their words. Eve was the driving factor in this story who captured my heart with the strength of her will. Her need to be with Patrick burned into the pages of the novel.

The writing gave me a glimpse of the past two books allowing to slide in smoothly with this one. The book has Nikola Tesla to be the scientist making these time travel lanterns. It was fun to meet the man behind alternating current (AC) in a fictional setting. The story was about love, and it was the driving passion of Eve which made it come alive, so alive that the unknown stranger that Patrick was in 1884 had to take notice.

Modern women in the autocratic oppressive world of 1884 was well shown. I liked how the two best friends managed it well, adapting to the older ways. The authors converged the story in such a way that they met via their words, even when their paths diverged further, separated by time.

This was Eve's story completely. How could I ever stop reading such a story which bespoke of the strength of a woman's love. It was simply enchanting.

‘The Christmas Eve Secret’ is the third book in The Christmas Eve, Time Travel series. I have read the first two but each book can be read independent of each other. However, it is best to read them in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.

It is now 2019 and Eve and Patrick are overjoyed! Eve is pregnant. They are finally starting to feel settled and safe. Eve tells Patrick that she thinks they should destroy the lantern that has allowed them to time travel. She has a feeling that it is going to bring bad luck. One day when Patrick is away, Eve answers the door thinking it is a deliver but a man from the past pushes the door open and forces Eve to retrieve the lantern from the safe and he runs off with it. When Patrick returns home they go looking for and find the lantern and throw it in the ocean to prevent further incident.

Eve wakes the next morning to find that her entire life has turned upside down. She is forced to find the lantern again and time travel back to 19th century New York.

I love this series! Just when you think it can’t get any better, it does! In this edition, we meet Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. I especially loved that Tesla is there! This time Eve’s best friend, Joni accompanies Eve to the 19th century. She is a very quirky character and I especially loved her antics in the 19th century where women are supposed to know their place!

After reading books one and two, I thought they would make the perfect gift to readers of time travel or historical fiction but now with the third, I plan to buy the set of three for my sister in-law for Christmas. Shh, don’t tell her. LOL! I hope that Elyse Douglas continues the series with book 4 and beyond! Their writing brings their characters and 19th century New York to life! I think the series would also make a great television series! I give book 3 and the entire series 5 stars! Bravo!

The Christmas Eve Secret by Elyse Douglas is a most charming timeslip read and the third book in A Time Travel Novel series. I recommend reading books one and two first for maximum enjoyment.
The reader once again catches up with Eve and Patrick – and what happened next, I could not have predicted. Theirs is a love outside the confines of time. It is a love that will not die. It is a love that takes risks and it is a love that is prepared to sacrifice.
This is a thrilling read set in 1884. Through comprehensive descriptions the reader glimpses a bygone age. It is an age where chivalry is not dead but doesn’t always happen. Women are seen as second class citizens to be used by men.
Disease is rife. Life is precious. Without modern medicine, lives hang in the balance.
The Christmas Eve Secret is about taking a risk. It is a risk to reconnect and rediscover that which appears lost. I adored the book and am loving this charming series.

That lantern has brought both happiness and trouble to Eve and Patrick. They would not have met without it, but fearing its dangers, they decide to destroy it. Bad decision. When Eve drops it in the Hudson River, it gives off a strange blue light. And the next day, when Eve wakes up, she discovers that the last three years of her life have been reset, with Patrick gone as well as her pregnancy. Wanting her husband back, Eve again travels to the past, and this time Joni goes with her! It’s a great adventure for Joni, but Eve is fraught with despair, searching for the lantern that can return them to the future. She does find Patrick, but the reunion is not what she hoped for. It’s an engrossing tale, with each book just as good, if not better, than the previous one in the series. Great characters, excellent writing, and a well thought-out plot combine for a most entertaining story.

Terrific Christmas Reading

I throughly adored this series! The main characters are loveable and well written. The times and location scenes are easily imaginable they are so vivid.
The only thing that could have made it better is if Eve could have told Patrick she was pregnant.
Highly recommended.

I have one word to say about this book-- Patrick. I've decided that my life will not be complete until I have a Patrick Gantly in it. He's so dreamy. A handsome old-fashioned man and a whip-smart detective? Sign me up. Which, of course, explains why his wife, Eve is so devastated when she accidentally loses him. But that's getting ahead of myself, let me go back.
'The Christmas Eve Secret' is the third book in the Christmas Eve series by Elyse Douglas, and the most emotional one yet. Eve and the dreamy Patrick are adjusting to their lives in current day New York after several trips back in time in previous novels. Their time machine? An antique lantern that Eve stumbled across in a small shop in Pennsylvania. However, after two such jaunts to the past, Eve has decided that she wants to destroy the lantern in order to keep it from interfering in their lives any further.
After tangling with a gun-wielding maniac, the couple finally manage to destroy the lantern and the next morning, Eve awakens to find that the life she built with Patrickhas changed with devastating consequences. Eve embarks on another journey into the past to get her life back, but will she be able to return everything to normal? Or will Patrick and her perfect life be changed forever?
I've really enjoyed this series and dug into this novel with the fervor of a starving woman. I love the relationship between Patrick and Eve. I love their byplay and their romance that grows with every book. I can't tell you how heartbroken I was when Eve woke up to find her world had changed! I was positively weeping. I don't like spoilers, so I don't plan on giving up any more information than what you see above. For anything more, you'll just have to read the novel and find out for yourself!

I am a time-travel book junkie and this series always keeps me engrossed and wondering what could possibly happen next!  It is also a story about love, adventure, and hope.

This is the third book in a series and while it stands alone I suggest reading The Christmas Eve Letter first and then The Christmas Eve Daughter next.  These two books will help you understand the relationship between Eve and Patrick, and introduce you to other characters so you will have a better understanding of the storyline.

Eve and Patrick finally have the life they wanted until a mishap regarding the lantern throws a wrench into their lives that could potentially forever alter their lives.

The authors weave a story that melds the past and the present seamlessly. Eve ends up back in the late 1800s with her best friend Joni and while Eve knows what to do to fit in, Joni has a harder time but quickly finds herself enjoying this time period especially when she meets a handsome doctor.  Could it be love at first sight?   There is also science in the book, bringing in Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla (mostly Tesla) with an explanation about the lanterns from Tesla.

While there are various characters, this book is about Eve and her love for Patrick and making sure she doesn't have to go through life without him.  She endures the time period where women are not treated well but she is able to bring hope to some people she meets.  I don't want to give away too much of the story but trust me when I saw that this series is gripping from the time travel and history and there is a love story that doesn't end.

We give this 5 paws up.

Every Christmas I put aside two or three weeks to read holiday themed books, and given my love of time travel, The Christmas Eve letter made the list two years ago.

I still remember the stilted formalness and repetitive use of the name “Mr. Albert Harringshaw” some 200 books later, and I returned last year to The Christmas Eve Daughter. I recall a character named Irene who drove me up the wall, and that the villain of the book was referred to constantly as “the bad man.”

Here’s the thing. Time travel is always an ambitious plot, one easy to get wrong. I’ve read authors who have pages upon pages on their plots, making sure everything as written was perfectly reasoned. I’ve read from authors whose plots make no sense.

Spoiler space.

Okay, it seems that the way the plot works with the lanterns is that Eve travels back in time, changes the future, returns to that changed future (different Georgie Boy, different home, a different Joni.) When Eve and Patrick destroyed the lantern, they inexplicably destroyed the time stream they were living in, forcing Eve back into her original time stream at the point of departure. She finds a different lantern in the antique store, returns to an earlier time (1884 instead of 1885), changes the future, and then returns with Patrick to that now third timeline, one without Georgie Boy at all in it.

Right?

Okay, so some questions. Why did Tesla’s lanterns jump timestreams? I don’t understand why two different lanterns would be found in the same master location. Because the plot says so? I took it the timestream Eve awakes in a few chapters into this book was a reset version of the master timestream. So shouldn’t she find a letter inside the lantern from the Harringshaw’s again, not that I’m desperate to see them?

When Eve and Patrick destroyed the lantern, if that erased the timeline, then why did she still go home with him, spend the night together and have things reset in the morning? Shouldn’t it have been instantaneous? That really bothered me throughout this reading. They continue a conversation and then go home, and for some reason I think they decorated a tree that night. Why did all that happen?

The biggest issue for me? I recognize why it happened, as described above, but when the timeline reset, the earlier version of Eve wasn’t pregnant. She was pregnant with her first child, and then with the snap of her fingers she wasn’t, but she got a substitute daughter in the form of Colleen, and never really talks about it again, or thinks about it at the end of the book. She’s upset that GeorgieBoy has been lost, and there’s even a point where Patrick references it, says it’s sad, moves on, and adopts a replacement (I wasn’t clear if it was the same dog) but Eve’s baby is no more, and it’s completely glossed over. At Christmas. I’m a dude, but I’m a dad, and that just rubbed me the wrong way.

Overall, writing wise, this was the best of the three books. Characters were allowed to be out of their minds, or have fights, or be unlikeable at times, just like real people. My issues were plot based, and had nothing to do with writing style, and until those frustrations I was feeling much better about this than the earlier two books.

I’m somewhere between 3 and 4 stars at this point. The first two got three stars. The plot about the baby didn’t leave me feeling comfortable and that took it down a notch at the end.

I’ll certainly be back for Book 4 in a year.

A wonderful Christmas ("Eve") it was, is and will always be with all the twists, turns and going forward & back through time!

I have read so many of these books by this wonderful husband & wife authors team. I'm not very good giving reviews, but I will say that this 3rd installment of the time travel Christmas Eve books is a wonderful time travel romance and it kept my nose glued to this book in all my spare time (and not so much spare time lol!) . From them getting the Lantern stolen, buying it back and to the moment in time when they tossed the lantern into the water, to hopefully rid their lives of the lantern by doing so, so they wouldn't have to ever wonder if their lives would ever have to change, of going back or forward in time. Especially Eve, having brought Patrick & herself successfully back to the future, neither one wanted to take a chance of losing the other. Patrick came from the past to be with Eve. They were now married and expecting their first child. So they'd decided to go toss the lantern into the water off the bridge! So that should have cemented both of their lives here into the present time, right? I thought so too. Until the very next morning when Eve woke up - all alone in her bed... no Patrick beside her.. and her belly now empty of the baby that she and Patrick had conceived out of their love. That was a loss I wasn't expecting anymore than Eve was. Time had reset itself when they had both destroyed the lantern. Suddenly everything had changed as it used to be before Eve traveled back in time, then traveled back to the future with Patrick. It was as though it had never happened. She was back in the year of 2016 and she now suffered the loss of both her husband and of the baby that they had conceived together. Destroying the lantern had reversed life back to what it was in 2016 before she ever traveled back and met the love of her life - Patrick. Whatever shall she do now that she destroyed the lantern? Is Patrick lost to her FOREVER? I'll have to dive right into the next book and see what happens next! In this book, Eve gambles on going to the old shop in Pennsylvania just to see if the lantern went back to the shelves there. So Eve travels to that old shop once again finding the lantern and hoping it'll take her back to the past, to finding Patrick and hoping that he remembers her, their marriage and the baby they'd conceived that is no more. Hoping she'll be successful, but things didn't go as planned. They really never do. Will Patrick still be there and will he still remember her? Their love and marriage? Things didn't go her way. The lantern transported her back too far; back to when his pregnant wife is dying while giving birth to their daughter, who both had previously already died in the past she had traveled to the first time. He's no longer "her" Patrick... Whatever shall she do now??!

The Christmas Eve Secret

Eve had traveled to the past several times because of a lantern. After leaving 1914 Eve and Patrick decided to get rid of it. Then everything flashed back to the beginning and she lost her husband. Back to the antique shop for another lantern and she traveled to 1884 and Patrick didn’t remember her. Eve met Nikola Tesla and found that he created the lanterns on a Christmas Eve. Eve got hurt and to survive she needed modern medicine. Patrick lit the lantern and back to the future they went.

Love Can Survive the Winds of Time

What an intriguing adventure. The ups and downs kept me on an emotional roller coaster. I couldn’t put it down. A great love of time, forward and backward and in between. It pulled me in right from the beginning. I felt like I was right there beside the characters. I’m looking forward to the next book and anxious about it at the same time. Lol
I do recommend this series. It really needs to be read in order to get the full understanding or you will be lost.

Outstanding

This Time Travel Romance will take your breath away. Eve wakes up one morning to discover she is no longer in 2019 but in 2016 prior to all the time travel events. She is determined to get her husband and her life back, so she goes back in time to 1884 with her best friend Joni. The mystery, intrigue, and danger that Eve encounters will keep you on the edge of your seat. An awesome story and one I highly recommend.

Douglas never disappoints!

Captivating! I have burned dinner, been late for appointments, and blew off facetime chats just to keep reading this series. I love Eve & Patrick. The depth of their love transcends time and space...as Tesla (yes Tesla!!) was trying to explain to Eve (and Joni) in the book. Well, gotta go. About to read the final book in Douglas' Christmas series!

Love Never Dies

Like this as much as a Christmas Eve Letter. Leaves me wondering since all things that happened in first two novels were undone what were the fates of those people. Did they change back to previous end or to the ending in end of book.

I am enjoying this series but this book has plot holes. What about Patrick’s daughter Maggie? This book completely erases her existence. Maybe the rest of the series corrects this?
