Οι "Διευκρινήσεις επί των Θυσιών" του Joseph de Maistre θεωρούνται το ιδρυτικό κείμενο της νεώτερης ανθρωπολογίας και της θυσιαστικής πολιτικής θεολογίας. Joseph de Maistre

He was the most influential spokesmen for hierarchical political systems in the period immediately following the French Revolution of 1789. Despite his close personal and intellectual ties to France, Maistre remained throughout his life a loyal subject of the King of Sardinia, whom he served as member of the Savoy Senate (1787–1792), ambassador to Russia (1803–1817), and minister of state to the court in Turin (1817–1821).
Maistre argued for the restoration of hereditary monarchy, which he regarded as a divinely sanctioned institution, and for the indirect authority of the Pope over temporal matters. According to Maistre, only governments founded upon a Christian constitution, implicit in the customs and institutions of all European societies but especially in Catholic European monarchies, could avoid the disorder and bloodshed that followed the implementation of rationalist political programs, such as the 1789 revolution. Maistre was an enthusiastic proponent of the principle of hierarchical authority, which the Revolution sought to destroy; he extolled the monarchy, he exalted the privileges of the papacy, and he glorified God's providence.
Xavier de Maistre was his younger brother.

Joseph De Maistre es una de esas figuras en la historia que merece mucha más atención de la que generalmente se le otorga. El Tratado sobre los Sacrificios, muestra sus conocimientos particulares de una mistagogía cristiana que hoy en día, incluso dentro de los círculos eruditos, se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Una obra fundamental para todo aquel interesado en el esoterismo judeocristiano.

On the contrary, I am happy to notice that men, by giving God names expressing greatness, power, and goodness, by calling him Lord, Master, Father, and so on, show clearly enough that the idea of divinity cannot be born of fear. It can be seen also that music, poetry, dance, in a word all the pleasing arts, have been called on in religious ceremonies and that the idea of rejoicing was always so closely involved in the idea of festival that the last became everywhere synonymous with the first.

Joseph de Maistre is rather brilliant, and this short essay has been justly influential on thinkers on both the Left and Right. The essay is primarily concerned with explaining the insatiable drive towards human sacrifice. His argument is that only the rise of Christianity adequately resolved this problem, since it produces a generalizable ritual for mollifying bloodlust. Interestingly, JM highlights the progressive role Christianity has played in the emancipation of women.
The essay starts with an argument I confess I entirely agree with: "the idea of divinity cannot have been born of fear." The god of love only becomes the god of fearful sacrifice through a process of reification - Marxists should be delighted to find an ally in the father of contemporary reaction. I appreciate that JM goes out on a limb for alien intelligence - those who deny the plurality of worlds and the possibility of alien life utter the meanest "thought that has ever occurred to the human spirit." I should also note that I entirely agree with his withering critique of the shallowness of Voltaire.
The only reason I don't give this book 5 stars is the slightly alarming insistence on the doctrine of original sin. I agree with a lot of JM's arguments, but I'm not convinced that we need the premise of original sin to get to the conclusions he reaches. Spinoza's anthropology can similarly account for the effectivity of the Christian solution to the problem with the benefit of a more plausible notion of human nature. We are neither fallen nor elevated, we are power-maximizers. In Spinoza's realism, JM's account can be included as a particularly compelling explanation of the fictions of evil.

A veces me doy el gusto de leer por motivos totalmente arbitrarios, como la tapa del libro o el título, en este caso fue por el segundo.
El título es emblemático, o sea, habla sobre sacrificios, de los que involucran sangre.
Maistre reflexiona sobre la humanidad y su necesidad de matar algo para satisfacer a Dios. Siempre matamos animales o humanos para conseguir algo de la divinidad.
Al parecer el cristianismo es la única religión que escapa a eso. Suaviza con su amor y misericordia la existencia de los hombres porque el máximo sacrificio lo hizo Dios al mandar a su hijo a morir por nuestros pecados.
Que se yo, no es lo que esperaba pero ta. Este señor era contemporáneo a Voltaire y acá hace proselitismo por la fe cristiana ya que la moral burguesa y la ciencia estaban ganando terreno y se la veía venir.

Este ensayo clarifica el pensamiento (desde lo primigenio hasta el pensamiento cristiano) sobre el sacrificio, el dar para recibir. ¿Por qué necesitamos de la acción divina para sobrevivir?, ¿estamos condenados?, ¿por qué se da para recibir?, ¿qué se debe dar?, ¿qué se recibe? En resumidas cuentas, LA SALVACIÓN POR LA SANGRE.
Es un ensayo interesantísimo, no hay que pasarlo de largo sólo por la ideología e intenciones del autor.

November 24, 2025es necesario leer al enemigo 😜 todo lo contrario a lo que he leído este año y a pesar de que este señor me cae super mal, este ensayo me pareció muy bacano para profundizar sobre el concepto de sacrifico. Eso sí, me pareció horrible lo que dice de la inquisición y la moral definida por leyes divinas. Muy interesante leer esto justo después de leer la moral anarquista del goat Kropotkin 🫡

Es un grande opúsculo. De Maistre argumenta que el instinto al sacrificio proviene de lo mas profundo del hombre. No es un mero regalo que se hace para agradar a los dioses. ¡No! Para de Maistre eso es no comprender el sacrificio y menospreciar al hombre. El sacrificio es, mejor, una expiación por una culpa profunda, y esta ligada a la mera fuerza vital del hombre: el alma, y por ende, la sangre. Por eso la sangre tiene que correr, ya sea la de un animal, ya sea la de un hombre.
Todas las culturas paganas/pre-cristianas ofrecieron sacrificios, y lo hicieron porque intuían ese dogma: el de la expiación por la sangre. No se equivocaron al ofrecer sacrificios cruentos. Aun el sacrificio humano, error abominable, no parte de la gran verdad: se debe sacrificar. Y es solo Cristo quien rectifica la idea del sacrificio. Es el verdadero sacrificio, único con verdadero poder expiatorio.

Lo malo de hacer libros de capítulos de otras obras mayores es contar con opúsculos cuya unidad se haya perdida o remite a otros lados. No podía ocurrir de modo diferente con este texto.
El texto, si bien es corto, es de una densidad intelectual increíble. Es, salvando la analogía, como estar ante un agujero negro literario, de poco tamaño pero mucha masa "intelectual".
El tema es interesante, y su idea sobre el misterio de por qué se hacen sacrificios, que bien puede ser respondido ya por expertos en diversos campos de modo diverso, es el eje central para guiarnos de las antiguas oblaciones a los dioses al máximo sacrificio: el de Jesucristo.
Uno queda impresionado por la erudición de De Maistre, y se alaba de esta edición, que haya conservado las notas tanto en latín como en griego. Yo diría que no esperen de este texto un análisis científico sobre la práctica del sacrificio. Una vez expulsada esa idea de su mente, el texto les resultará más llamativo.
