Bereits der junge Thomas Mann hat die kurze Prosa als seine Form entdeckt und früh zur Meisterschaft entwickelt. Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. ,,Vara intră în toate drepturile ei. Incă pe la sfârșitul acelui august, urmară un şir de zile fierbinți, în care nu căzu nici un strop de ploaie. Cerul de un albastru palid, aburit privea spre pământul însetat, iar arșița încremenită, teribilă a zilei făcea loc către seară unei zăpușeli sufocante, apăsătoare, pe care o adiere slabă o făcea cu atât mai sensibilă.”
,,Şedea adesea până târziu în noapte între cărțile lui. Numai micul ceas deșteptător ticăia monoton pe comoda din odaie, iar afară răsunau când și când paşi singuratici. - Sus de tot în piept acolo unde începe gâtul, îi stăruia o durere ușoară, călduță, lichidă, care năzuia să plângă cu adevărat, plângea doar în cuvinte pe hârtia răbdurie de pe masă.”
,,Da, el se înstrăinase de toate. Lumea din jurul său se scufundase, iar el plutea prin săptămâni doar pe sub norişori trandafirii și sub amoraşi rococo care cântau la vioară - fericit, fericit, fericit!

Mir fehlt die weibliche Perspektive. Wie so oft... Ein Mann - hier der Mann - erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes.
Er ist jung und stockverliebt in eine hübsche Schauspielerin. Sie wohnt in einer billigen Gegend und ist überaus schlank. Weil sie sich nichts schöneres leisten kann und aus Geldnot nicht viel isst?...
Sie verkauft sich also eines Tages an einen alten Mann für Geld - wohl nicht aus Jux und Tollerei. Sie wird dafür als unmoralisch und als Enttäuschung auf ganzer Linie dargestellt. Seine Enttäuschung ist schon verständlich.
Der junge Verliebte hat ihr aber nichts geboten nebst lauwarmen Handküssen und heißer Luft. Er sagt, er sei überglücklich. Bekommt also viel von ihr. Lebenslust, Verliebtheit was gibt es schöneres? Dopamin. Serotonin. Oxitocin. Gibt ihr aber nichts dafür. Zumindest nichts, womit sie Miete zahlen kann. Sie nimmt also ihre Finanzen selbst in die Hand. Als junge, schöne Frau im Jahre 1894.

Eine der besten Erzählungen, die ich - bis jetzt - lesen durfte.

Aus vielen verschiedenen Perspektiven kann man diese Geschichte lesen. MMn zentral: die Erfahrung der Desillusionierung. Manchmal sieht man in den Dingen mehr, was man darin sehen will, als was sie wirklich sind. Eigentlich banal, aber sehr gut dargestellt in dieser Erzählung.
