Clive couldn’t help but think how similar and yet different they were. She wished to atone for someone else’s sins while he worked to correct his own. He didn’t have an answer for her except, “With a heart as true as yours, the most beautiful thing you could do for the world is be yourself.”

Lord Clive Dendrick, Marquess of Fawley, seeking revenge on the Duke Van Dero and his family, has been sent to Lady Irene Hiller, an old friend from childhood, and who he stole a hairpin from before he was kidnapped. Rumor has it Irene has a book written by Van Dero that has the secrets of all the Lost Lords. But does she have it, and if she does does she know what it is?

Lady Irene Hiller never forgot that kiss. Here she was, a spinster, inheritor of half the Van Dero holdings:” more wealth than the Crown”, and slightly obsessed with Lord Dendrick.
When another intruder hell bent on “THE BOOK” tries to hurt her, Clive, now positive she is innocent, protects her as the book’s secrets begin to unfold.

They say Clive is the last of the Nine “Lost Lords” that need to recover from their abuse by Duke Van Dero.[having only heard of that series as I have read these books I cannot confirm nor deny that]. All I know is what a wonderful read this is; full of mystery, revenge and romance, the perfect trilogy for a well written regency. Deborah Wilson hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Highly recommended 5/5

This book was okay. It kind of confused me at first. I thought he didn't like her at all and then out of nowhere she became is everything. I may have misunderstood that part.
I won't be continuing the series this book was my closure. Once again I felt the book was rushed at the end. I wish the author gave an epilogue.
Also it should be stated that this series is a clean book.

Pain of the Marquess

This story was well written. Great historical romance . Irene was alone, on the shelf at 30. Her father was an evil man, but she did not know this fact. Clive wanted to know what her father had told Irene about him. Must read to learn the whole story.

I love this series, and every time I read a new installment, I find I love the characters featured even more than the previous ones. It's ridiculous. I'm sure it's just because I get carried away, immersed in the lives of these people. Still, I found I really liked Irene SO much!

I've been wanting to read a story in which one of the main characters was not impossibly beautiful or handsome. Irene is described in a way that makes it clear she is not particularly attractive, perhaps downright unattractive, but she has the most kind, giving, and loving soul of any character I can remember reading recently. This overpowers her physical appearance so that it becomes unimportant. She loves without reserve and without the fear of looking foolish. I was touched by her unbridled enthusiasm and unquestionable love of Clive.

Clive is an interesting character, more damaged by his early life than by the time he spent in captivity with the other Lost Lords. He is so afraid to love that he is unable to recognize it when it creeps up on him, but it is clear to the reader, if only because Irene becomes more and more beautiful to him, even as he denies he is in love. It is a lesson in selfless love to witness the way in which Irene manages to reach him when no one else can.

The story itself is fascinating, particularly as Irene begins to realize how evil her father actually was. Understandably, she feels as if she needs to make up for his sins. She is referred to as Saint Irene, and not always as a compliment by those who question their own goodness. Clive becomes more and more fearful of losing her, the more he realizes how wonderful she is and how bad he has been, and the more he realizes how much he needs her. She knows he is hiding something and that he cannot tell her what it is until he understands that she will love him no matter what. And until he realizes that, he will not be able to give her his heart.

Although I loved the story, there were a couple of loose ends that bothered me. When Irene tells Lord Edmund to say "hi" to his wife, he responds in a way that makes it seem like he has a second, secret wife. Irene has unfinished business with Cecilia, and I felt there should be some closure. At the end of the book, a maid comes to Irene and Clive's room and says, "Lady Ganden has requested your presence in the studio. It is urgent." As they leave the room, the book ends.

This is not your typical cliffhanger ending. It feels more like a whoopsie. It's so vague, it doesn't compel me to read the next story. It just irritates me because I don't believe there's an urgent reason she wishes to see them. Don't get me wrong. I DO want to read the next story! But I want to read it because I love this author and I always enjoy her writing, not because I'm intrigued by the statement. I think this message from Lady Ganden should have been left out entirely, or there should have been more context to make it seem more urgent. I wish it hadn't ended this way.

What happens?
Irene is the daughter of the man who was behind the kidnapping of the lost lords. She has forever been in love with Clive believing he loved her too. With her father's death a mysterious assailant is entering her bedroom to get her to reveal where the book of secrets is.
Clive and the others clear her name of being involved and being like her brother and father. With that done he must protect her as she has no other relatives close enough to protect her.
Final thoughts
I really wasn't sure about this book because of her age (I know I know!) but I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong. This was a good read. I'm disappointed by the ending but I loved the actual story its a slower burn than the others but its very sweet.

TITLE: “Once you allow someone to walk all over you, you become a rug, and rugs are beaten.”

SETTING: LONDON, March 1822
What if the daughter of the architect of the capture and torture of the Lords of London were to fall in love with one of them? Would he be able to love her in return? If only that was the single complication to face Lady Irene Hiller (daughter of the Duke of Van Dero) and the Marquess of Fawley, Lord Clive Dendrick! The situation is much more complex!

Irene must deal with the sudden knowledge of the vulgar businesses her father ran, the complicity of her brother, the knowledge that her brother was murdered to protect someone else, and that yet another family member is willing to kill HER for the book of secrets! Thankfully, she has learned early on a valuable lesson, one that she endeavors to pass on to other young women:
““As you take your first steps into the London Season, I must make one thing very clear. Never, under any circumstance, settle. Not with husbands. Not with friends or family. Never settle for anything less than respect. Once you allow someone to walk all over you, you become a rug, and rugs are beaten.””
She will need this strong sense of self-respect and self-confidence to swim in the turbulent whirlpool of events threatening to sweep her away!
Lord Fawley has spent a lifetime of being tormented, emotionally tortured and held captive before falling into the hands of Mr. Goody who held him bound for 1 year. He has been told he is not lovable so long he believes it, and it takes a long time for him to open his heart to love anyone again. Thus, the romance between Lady Irene and Lord Clive grows slowly, with fits & starts.

CRITIQUE: I enjoyed this episode even more than the other books, because the inner pain of multiple characters was so well, and so believably, portrayed. Past characters are seamlessly woven into the story at appropriate times and play important roles in this story. Well written and engrossing story, that adds a significant piece to the tale of the Lost Lords of London.

Another excellent tale about the Lost Lords. I love this series. This story surrounds the evil Duke Van Dero's daughter Irene Hiller and the Marquess of Fawley, Clive Dendrick. The story is shrouded with mystery, vile secrets, illegal activity, betrayal and the search for Van Dero's infamous book of secrets called "The Book of Affairs". This book contained the skeletons in the closets of the ton. This gave Van Dero unlimited power over people who thought their skeletons were concealed. Now that he has passed on there were some people looking for it including the Lords. One man in particular had been threatening Irene's life. Clive for reasons of his own felt obligated to protect her. Irene has loved Clive for years and swore no other man would do. The main plot was about Irene and Clive's painful and blossoming relationship. One of the subplots was the reveal of Van Dero's evil business ways to Irene. Irene had believed him to be the best of men until her eyes witnessed the atrocities her father commanded. Another subplot was the search for the "book". This brought danger to all the families of the Lords. The search was exhaustive as was the relationship between Irene and Clive. Clive's lack of self-worth because of the way his stepfather forced him to live as a youth. His abuse continued for years and his stepfather had no trouble reminding Clive of his misdeeds and what it would do to his mother it she was to find out. Irene proved to have a spine of steel, spoke her mind but had a tender heart for what was right and good. She had so much love to give and she did give it. However, she was naive thinking she could handle the man who was terrorizing her about the book. Clive showed her differently. There is a new character introduced, Van Dero's heir, Lord Cassius Kemp. He is the new duke. I have a feeling we will be reading more about him in the future. An excellent read. I highly recommend it.

Clive, The Marquess of Fawley, until this book seemed the best of the kidnapped Lost Lords, above reproach, darn good looking and protector of the mute Garrick! But this book reveals Clive's sordid past, trained from his childhood by his stepfather, Edmund, who had stolen his inheritance, to be a thief and coached to support his seven half siblings by stealing, even from his own mother. And he is still that same man, bent on revenge against the Duke Van Dero who headed up the kidnapping, and is the deceased father of his main inheritor, his hot pretty spinster daughter, who got all of his criminal businesses. Irene, though, is obsessively in love with Clive, who, with a kiss, stole a jeweled hairpin from her, years ago on a dare by the woman he was courting, the last thing he ever stole before being kidnapped. This story centers on Clive being sent to Irene by the Lost Lords to determine if she has the Book of Sins that was the basis of Van Duro's power and still has the dark secrets of the Lost Lords. He becomes convinced of her innocence and begins protective action for her against an intruder into her bedroom trying to get the book who reveals to her the businesses that need cleansing. An exciting tale with thrilling dangers that leads to a HEA romance and can be read alone but much better if you've read the proceeding books! I volunteered this review from an ARC. Is this the last of this great series?

I have loved all the books about the lost lords - Ms. Wilson does have a wonderful knack for enticing & weaving great stories. The men in her books are all attempting to be better people & overcome the darkness & tragedies in their pasts. Clive Dendrick, Marquess of Fawley was one of those men. He & his friends, the other Lost Lords, are searching for a book that has horrible things written by the deceased Duke of Van Dero about them & other members of the upper class.

Irene Hiller, daughter of the Duke of Van Dero, has loved Clive for 6yrs., after just one kiss from him. He does not understand her obsession nor will he ever return her feelings. When Irene's father dies & someone is breaking in to her house, threatening her & insisting she give him the book; she calls on Clive for help as she loves & trusts him.

Their adventure starts here with secrets, slave trading, kidnapping, intrigue, action, deceit, arson, mistrust, kindness, love, romance, family & friends. I loved that all the Lost Lords & their wives were in the story, as it really showed they were family although not by blood. Can all of these things be solved & will it all end in a HEA?

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book; all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

Lady Irene Hiller heard slow footsteps of someone moving around in her room the footsteps came to a stop and she heard breathing next to her bed as she got ready to scream hand landed on her nose and mouth and the sound was muffled. She thought she was going to die the man holding her told her she would scream he would remove his hand she kept fighting he released her and the air came rushing back into her lungs it was bless and he threatened to kill her if she tried to scream. Wanted to know where the book was except she didn't know what book you wanted. And this is the beginning of Lady Irene's story. Her midnight visitor kept returning and telling her about her father's businesses and she kept discovering the corruption that existed in the businesses. Her father had been the Duke of Van Dero had died two months after her brother had died. Her cousin had inherited the title she had inherited the businesses and half the wealth. Irene was in love Lord Clive, the Marquess of Fawley and had been since he stole her hairpin that had been her mother's. She thought he had kept it for himself and that he was in love with her. To find out what happens in the rest of the book is read. It's a very good book...

An incredibly powerful and painful novel, this book brings to light the devastation caused by man's greed for power and the lengths they will go to get what they want. Lady Irene has loved Clive for years without realising that even though he kept his distance, there were those who would hurt her just because she had feelings for him. With her father's death, it opens a can of worms that Irene never anticipated. Betrayal comes from sources close to her and even those she thought she could trust, prove to be unworthy of her kind heart. The underbelly of society is exposed as various parties hone in for the same prize. Whilst the story is painful and suspenseful, it is also deeply romantic as Clive's heart start to soften and mend through Irene's unwavering belief and love for him. As secrets and past crimes start to tumble into the light, the Lost Lords once again stand together to protect those they love. The novel is well written with an intricate plot and keeps the reader in suspense through to the end. There are still some unanswered questions, but no doubt the author plans to bring these to light in a future book. Highly recommended.

Hurt Like No Other

When I first started this series my expectation was that these would be your typical regency romances but they have proven to be more than that upon the reading of each book.

Each book has evolved upon the telling of each characters story and Clive's story was deeper than ever imagined. This character went through and is still struggling with unresolved issues and boy did I feel for him as the story unraveled.

No the character of Irene if compared to the woman of the day would be considered desperate and delusional. What woman would believe a man loved her just because he took something precious from her and then cling to this belief for six years. Well thank you this is not current times and her steadfastness in believing and loving may net her her hearts desire.

Totally recommending this series to anyone that loves a mystery, underhanded dealings, love that conquers more obstacles and hard headed men and justice prevailing in many different ways some not even legal.

I love all of the books in this series. In fact I don't even know which number we're up to now. I love that each one is its own unique story but ties into the others. This one likely wraps up the story of the Lost Lords.....some. I wonder where we will go next. My guess is that Irene's cousin, Cass, will be the next to find love. I hope so. I think he's going to be an interesting character.
This book is where the last Lost Lord finds his chance at a love. A love he didn't want at all. Heck he didn't even really like her that much. Clive stole her hairpin for the woman he once thought he loved. But that ruined his reputation. Now he's falling for the very woman he stole from. And she thinks he did it because he loved her. Nope. And what will she do when she finds out she was never the object of his affection.....after they marry? Well read it and find out. Just another sweet clean story of love. Ms. Wilson always does a great job at weaving romance into a story set in a time and society most of us can't even imagine living in. Always a fun read. Enjoy

This was the first book i read in this series. Although the number of secondary characters is quite large, i was not too much out of my depth, but aware that i was missing out on some of the motivation of the characters. The characters are interesting, well rounded and varied. The heroine is for once not breathtakingly beautiful, that was a nice touch. The story line is slow paced, and i was wondering for a while where this was all going: it is not just a question of how the marquess gets the girl, as it is in many (most) romances. Here the sex scenes are simply alluded to.
That said, what really irritated me was the lack of editing: typos, missing words, doubles... And the extract for the next book at the end, in which the story line continues, had them too, so: not going to pursue reading that author.

Deborah Wilson has written a story for each of the Lost Lords and who knew she'd save the best for last?? Clive and Irene are the perfect couple and I found myself rooting for them when we met them in the previous books. But their book firmly planted them in my heart. Nicely done, Deborah, nicely done!

Deborah has the ability to not only make you feel what the character is feeling but understand why he or she is feeling it. Her words allow you to see inside not only the character's mind but heart as well. I truly admire her way with words.

I will say one thing - Ms Wilson needs a proofreader or a better one to go through her books. I try to mostly ignore the mistakes but sometimes they are very distracting.

This is the story of Clive and Irene. It is Book 9 of the ongoing story in the Valiant Love Series. He is another one of the men troubled by his past. His present can be threatened by the past if these men don't find the key to what will destroy them. There is a lot of action in this story, as well as suspense, mystery, violence, kindness, compassion and love. All the men in this circle, including Clive, and all the wives stick together, always. This book holds your attention from beginning to end. Deborah Wilson is a well written author. This book is highly recommend by me. I can't wait for her next book.

One of my favourites of this series.
This is the story of how Clive, the last of the Lost Lords, finds his HEA; whilst it is Book 9 in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I loved that Irene was brave enough to show her feelings, opening herself up to ridicule and hurt in the face of little encouragement from Clive but equally never settling for anything less than respect. As she says to her friend’s daughters “Once you allow someone to walk all over you, you become a rug, and rugs are beaten.”
Finally there is closure for the Lost Lords but the door is opened for others to have the lives turned upside down by long held secrets.

This is Clive’s story—the last of the Lost Lords whose tale had yet to be told. I feel quite bereft as there are no other Lost Lords to read about. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and the characters, although flawed, have become my friends. Clive’s story is just as dramatic as the ones before. Also filled with mystery, intrigue, twists and turns in every direction. And of course an angst-filled love story between Clive and Irene. A clean romance as is Ms Wilson’s custom, non-the-less filled with great passion. I shall miss this group of characters. I highly recommend reading it.

This is a sad and painful story of a woman who discovers how wicked her father had been. She tries to right his wrongs, but an assailant is terrifying her in her own home. The man she has always loved is hiding secrets from her, although he offers his protection in marriage. This story contains much heartbreak and pain, and even when Clive is emotionally tearing Lydia apart. Lydia holds herself together and forgives him, because that's what love does. Love does not abandon, it forgives. A lesson Clive Fawley is going to learn.

Mystery, love, commitment

Mystery, love, commitment and loyalty is what you will get in this story. As the drama of this series continues to unfold the suspense builds to the falling action of the story. Mean while trust and love unfurls is what is fate and was always meant to be. Action suspense, drama and love is what you get in this book. I truly enjoy reading this book and believe that this is my favorite. It was a great escape for everyday life.

Another great book. Irene has loved Clive for several years and believed Clive returned that love. Clive stole Irene’s hair pin then was kidnapped shortly after. Her father was the one how chose the men to be kidnapped but she didn’t know that side of him. Clive was the only one who believed her innocent of her fathers sins. This story kept me interested the whole way through and I enjoyed it very much.

I have absolutely loved this whole series, but the Lost Lord books especially, there's something wonderful in seeing love transform these broken men. I loved Irene's goodness and her stubborn determination that Clive was the one for her. I loved seeing Clive become a whole person, something he'd never had the opportunity to be. The intrigue in this was fabulous and I wondered what was going to happen next throughout. I can't wait to read more.

The Lost Lords

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though I started the
series at the end, I still followed the story-line and was able to get to know the characters well. Heaps of suspense, mystery and skull-thuggery intertwined with love, hope and HEA. As an extra was the information selected and well written into the book about child slavery. Recommend!!!

It was good to reunite with the Lost Lords and their ladies. Clive and Irene have a twisted path to love. I am sad that there is only one lord left single. Deborah Wilson has done an excellent job making each lord and lady follow different paths and yet all working together.

A different take on the typical historical. Strong minded female loves frivolous male. He was kind, not dominating, even though he didn't understand her 'focus' on him. The story progresses at a believable pace, with a good number of twists and turns. Well done little mystery/romance.
