When I first started this story, I have to admit I was apprehensive about the heroine being Amish. I wasn't sure how that would pan out. Turns out, I really enjoyed it.
HERO~ Porter was not a bad guy, he just did bad thing to bad people. He was tough, protective and utterly in love with Faye.
HEROINE~Faye was so darn sweet and naive. Growing up in an Amish community left her sheltered and lacking any kind of street smarts. She was a fish out of water when she found herself in Porter's life
SEXUAL HISTORY~Faye was a virgin Porter's past was thankfully not mentioned
OM/OW DRAMA ~ None
STEAM some steam in the second half of the book.
VIOLENCE Nothing of a sexual nature
SEPARATION no separation
STANDALONE OR SERIES Standalone that is part of a series. Previous characters are mentioned but not absolutely necessary to understand
SECONDARY CHARACTERS Porter's men were protective of Faye and I hope they get stories
This was another good story In the 'Crime Kings' series. Thank you, May!
Our Heroine, Faye Amos, has grown up extremely sheltered in an Amish community. Her dad is beyond strict and demanding. It seems she works on their land from sun-up to sun-down every day. The only time she's allowed any pleasure is when her father permits her to walk to town to buy supplies and occasionally stop by a non-Amish friend's farm. Her father doesn't like her to see her friend (because she isn't Amish) but she does so whenever she can get away but only always with her father's permission. She's twenty-years-old but has never been outside of her Amish community. She would never think of lying or going against anything her father says no to. She blindly does whatever he says and now he has told her he is choosing her husband and she will marry at the end of the month.
When her brother, Samuel, was sixteen he went on Rumspringa (a break from being Amish when they travel to the city and are encouraged to break the rules.) But Samuel never came home from his and men arrived at their home to inform the family that Daniel was dead. Soon after, Faye's mother committed suicide because of her son's death.
One day Faye was going to their small town to buy a few supplies and say hello to her friend at the farm. She never made it back home and was kidnapped by a horrible mob boss's goons.
Our hero, Porter Rysk at thirty-seven-years-old, is the top mob boss in Chicago but he has strong competition, Ryan Leo. Leo is trying to take over Porter's territory and he and his men are steeling from the shipments of all the other men in this series. The plan is to terminate Leo. He's causing way too much trouble and he's a bit off the wall.
As Porter's men are following Leo's goons they see them kidnap a woman and they, in turn, kidnap her away from them. They take her to Porter and tell him what happened. One look is all it takes for Porter to fall for her but they live together for six weeks before consumating their relationship.
I enjoyed this book and I liked the couple but not quite as much as I liked the ones from the previous four books. I felt there were times
BOOK SAFETY Completely safe book. Hero celibate for many years. He had only been with a handful of women when he was a much younger man and wasn't thrilled with the experience so he has been celibate since then. Women were taboo for him. Low angst No OW/OM drama Heroine a virgin and completely naive
The newest book in the Crime Kings series is amazing. Since "safe" books are my preference, this is an author that I can auto click without needing to read reviews for safety info. I'll never have any worries about cheating or scenes with OM/OW. (That's something I can't handle) She may throw in a virgin or two, insta-love, a kidnapping, some violence and angst but rest assured you will NOT have to worry about manwhores or cheating between H/h. OK, so let's get down to it, shall we???? -no cheating -virgin h, celebate H -H 37 y/o, h 20 y/o -insta-love -no sexual abuse (h gets kidnapped, hit & shot) -dual POV -H is alpha, possessive, tears in his eyes, almost cries, emotional & gone for the h -h is Amish, been sheltered her whole life from the "outside" world, nieve but so sweet, loved her actually -possible triggers - talk of h's mother committing suicide, H beating, torchering & killing "bad men" to try to get information, talk of brainwashing (can't tell you who, but it's not towards h/H but an outside character
Great job Queen May on another kick ass story. As always...can't wait for the next. I completely, fully, wholeheartedly recommend reading this book/series.
I liked this story for the most part. I liked both characters even if Faye was very naive and innocent. I liked Porter except I wasn’t a fan of how he treated Faye after she found out what he did for a living. I didn’t think he had a reason to be angry with her and treated her too rough. I wish he would have used a more sympathetic tactic. Otherwise I liked the story. This has been an enjoyable series.
Safety and Spoilers Completely safe. No ow drama, another crime boss wants h for his own and is out to get her. H has been celibate for a long time and has only been with a few women when he was a lot younger, h is a virgin. Lots of mafia drama and death of secondary characters. h is kidnapped and slapped a couple times and is shot by accident.
Faye is a shy sweet lady whom you wouldn’t expect to be with porter but they work. Insta love and though I’m not a fan of that type of book I really enjoyed this one.
Sheltered Spirits is book five in the Crime King series, but it can be read as a stand alone.
Faye has been raised in an sheltered Amish community, but she secretly longs to explore the outside world. Events transpire, and she ends up in the hands of Chicago crime boss, Porter Rysk. Porter is a sexy alpha male who falls for Faye from the very start. He vows to never let her go but accomplishing that might prove tricky for two reasons. 1. She has no idea who Porter really is, and he is afraid that when she discovers his secrets she will leave him. 2. There is a very bad man who has become obsessed with Faye, and he will stop at nothing to get her. Can Porter keep her safe from this crazy man? What will happen when Faye discovers who Porter is and the violence that comes along with his "business"?
Wow! This is my first time reading anything by this author, but it will not be the last. I just loved Porter! Yes, he was a criminal, and yes his business was prone to violence, but with Faye he was sweet, loving, and patient. And Faye? Well, I have to be honest her. When I read the blurb for this book, I wasn't sure if I would like this type of heroine, but she proved me wrong. She was as sweet as she was strong, and she loved Porter something fierce.
I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to buy the previous books and read them while waiting on the next book to be published. Great job, May Gordon!
I LOVE THIS SERIES :) so much! This author really makes great books like what i wanted. One of my favorite authors for sure!
THIS CRIME STORY IS VERY GOOD. And the LOVE STORY IS SAFE. No too annoying things really going on in this story. SO EVEN THOUGH ITS A CRIME and mob boss and violence like that happening, THE LOVE STORY AND BOTH CHARACTERS ARE SAFE.
- NO ANNOYING OW
- OTT POSSESSIVE ALPHA MALE
- NO SEPARATION
- DRAMA WITH OM and the heroine’s brother but not too annoying and the hero safe the heroine before its too late or too far. So the drama is not annoying...
Five stars for this wish I could give more loved how Porter was protective of faye plus his men who I would love to read stories about Faye was so shy timid and a Virgin and it was great to read how she grew with Porter how he didn't rush to have sex and was so patient with her teaching her to trust him there is some violence in this story ive not read any of this series and this can be read has a standalone but after reading and enjoying this so much I will definitely be getting the other books.I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.
°Virgin heroine °Hero celibate for years °Dual POV °He's 37, she's 20 °No OW drama °Unwanted attention from OM (bad guy) °No cheating or scenes with OP °OTT alpha hero °I didn't like the way the hero reacted when the h discovered his secret, I wish he'd been more understanding and gentle with her °Epilogue: 5 years later and another 5 years after that - married with 2 kids (the epilogue confused me a bit, at the end of the first epilogue the h is pregnant with their daughter but in the second epilogue they have a 10 y/o son (?))
I love how Ms. Gordon's men love so deeply, thoroughly. I love how she writes so much detail that as you read, the movie is playing in your mind. I love how, while her characters are strong, so determined and even intensely independent, their pride doesn't get in the way of them asking for or accepting offered help. Go 1 click this y'all. You'll not be disappointed 😘
3 1/2* Faye has lead a sheltered life in the Amish community until she is kidnapped twice. Porter is still looking for Leo so a surprise delivery from an associate who owes him stuns him. A beautiful fairy he feels the need to protect but will she accept him? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
This newest release was an enjoyable read. Porter and Faye’s instantly connect, she calms his crazy and what they end up with is a slow burn romance that in the end heats up like no other. I’m loving this series that brings intense men to their knees when they meet their other half.
What a romance when Amish girl met a mob. Heaven on scripted romance!! The story swept me off my feet at even the mere ideas of it. I liked how patient the H was and how swooning the romancing. All the right words and all the right steps to steal my-romance-lover heart. A great read with how surprisingly natural coupling the MCs was.
Gosh! I devoured this book sooo fast! I love Porter and Faye! How gruff and no nonsense Porter is. How he loves her. She's his everything from first sight. And Faye is so innocent, sweet and curious. They fit together perfectly! Another fabulous read in the Crime Kings series!
I really enjoyed this story. I think these stories and characters have evolved more through this Series of books. The story between Faye and Porter was nice to see. Insta-love, yet a bit of a slow burn.
I couldn't wait for Porters book to come out and it was so worth the wait. I loved the whole story and Faye was so sweet and innocent . I can't wait to read the rest of the guys books .
I just recently found may Gordon and I have sat and binge read everything she wrote in 5 days ( I have two kids so I also had to parent 😀 ) and I love them next book better than the last. I recommend any of her books
wow this book was amazing! its the fifth book in this series. she has always led a sheltered life. than one day she ends up in his place. he is a bad man that does bad things. only she is his shining light. one guy wants her for his own. he will not let her go.
This is the 5th book in the series. Porter is a crime king, who finds himself very protective towards Faye who is shy and innocent, and grew up in the Amish community. This is a well written story which is a great addition to the series, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
As Faye do d's out there is always good vs Evil. Another successful dreadful crime king and love that there is always growth for more. They may be bad men but they love their women and children. It is a must to read them all to know their love.
I genuinely didn't see that twist coming at the end...
Faye and Porter had pretty good chemistry, unnecessary drama related to him not being honest with her about his line of work... Pretty enjoyable read overall.

Faye and Porter are quite an interesting pair. Two hearts, from completely different worlds, sheltered in their own ways. Faye learns to adapt to life outside the Amish community that she has only ever known, Porter struggles with letting her in. The depth of his devotion to her, the hard man who is able to be soft, sweet with his lady. This was a fantastic read!
