Piper Hawthorne just walked through the front doors of Rosewood Academy.
The problem? Piper Hawthorne was supposed to be dead.
She was one of Rosewood Academy’s most beloved students until a post-prom accident took her life. Now, with the help of an eccentric tech entrepreneur, her parents have managed to bring her back.
A version of her, anyway.
But The Thorns, the kings of Rosewood Academy, don’t want Piper’s replacement. She might have the same speech patterns and mannerisms as their lost friend, but they’ll never see her as one of them.
Jude. Tyler. Brennan.
Handsome, but cruel. This is their world, and there’s no place in it for the girl they deem Piper 2.0.
They’ll do anything it takes to break her. To tear her down until she can’t take any more. Everyone has a breaking point, and The Thorns are going to find hers.
Piper 2.0?
She wasn’t programmed for this.
A note from the authors: Though this story features some AI technology, this book is light on the science and heavy on the petting. Recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content.
2.5 stars, rounded down because it was genuinely painful to read at times.
By which I mean I almost teared up, and that is a huge deal for me.
➽ Quick and Dirty Summary
Piper Hawthorne wakes up on an operating table, only to discover that she isn't Piper Hawthorne; she's an incredibly humanistic AI companion designed to comfort the real Piper's grieving parents. She looks like the old Piper, but doesn't have her memories - or her abrasive, bitchy personality. Piper 2.0 is intensely and painfully spineless.
She gets to school to discover that the Thorns and Roses - three boys, and two other girls respectively, who rule Rosewood Academy - hate her for being a fake replacement of their dead friend. And, in Tyler's case, dead girlfriend. All five of them do intensely sh*tty things to her and Piper is incapable of dealing with it.
➽ The Good ✔️ The premise is incredibly unique, and it did more to explain the bullies' justification than most bully romances.
✔️ It's emotionally written, to the extent that I really felt for Piper.
✔️ I can sort of understand why Piper is the way she is: I suspect she's programmed to be really submissive and almost masochistic in the way she takes what her bullies dish out. But this isn't explicitly stated by the authors, and it still doesn't make the romance between Piper and the 'heroes' palatable.
➽ The Bad
❌ Piper is so, so, so, so, SO stupid. Even - dare I say it - stupider than Maryne. After days of being called horrible names by the Thorns and Roses, Piper is immediately taken in when they say they want to be friends with her again. Obviously, it's a trap, and she's left humiliated for the nth time. I wanted to shake her. She gets taken in AGAIN, when hero Jude says he's sorry, so she has sex with him - only for him to laugh and kick her out. This happened within 24 hours of the last humiliation, so I really began to wonder if she even had a brain (or self-respect).
❌ Another example of her stupidity: her sex with Jude went terribly. But she goes on to have sex with the other two heroes, Brennan and Tyler. You know what? Each time, it ends EXACTLY THE SAME WAY - with them ignoring her, and discarding her! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me THRICE, shame on me. The definition of stupidity, to misquote Einstein, is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time.
❌ Jude, the chief arsehole, frequently thinks of hooking up with OW even after his encounter with Piper. This just put the nail in the coffin for me.
❌ There felt like a weird misogynistic undertone to the book? Let me explain. Brennan, Jude, and Tyler are all handsome and clever and athletic Thorns. Apparently Tori and Chelsey, the two other Roses (excepting Piper), are just brainless sluts. Ookay? Piper forgives the boys for bullying her constantly, but not the girls? In a breathtaking move of hypocrisy, the boys tell the girls off for bullying Piper, which they personally instigated and actively took part in!!!!
Overall
This book really frustrated me. I powered through it in one night, because the drama kept me up, and as soon as I got to the cliffhanger I immediately downloaded the next book. But I didn't actually enjoy what I was reading, and I've DNFed the sequel (review for it up shortly).
Woah. I am absolutely amazed. I don't like reading about teenagers, I don't usually like Sci Fi, and I really don't like reading about bully romance. But Hot Damn.
I was taken on a wild ride.
If you are sitting there wondering about whether or not to read this, Read It.
I just finished reading this arc and WOW. SO GOOD. It was the most original bully rh book I have read so far out of them ALL. Piper dies in an accidental drowning so her parents hire this scientist to make an AI type of clone that is suppose to be an exact replica of Piper. But this clone turns out to be her own person. She isnt a snobby rich girl that eats minions for breakfast like the real one. She is sweet and has feelings and all that good stuff. So since she was queen bee when she was alive, it only makes sense that there are other queens and kings that she reined with. Meet Tyler (her ex bf) Jude (dark asshole type) Brennan (sweet nerd) Tori (bitch1) & crap whats the other girls name? Casey? Chauncey? Shes irrelevant anyways. Piper assumes they will welcome her back with open arms but it is the complete opposite. They HATE this new "2.0" version and try everything they can to get her to leave. But somehow she has sex with all 3 guys (dang it Piper you have no self control) and the ending SHOCKED ME TO MY CORE. Worst cliff hanger ever. I think I gave enough in my review without totally spoiling anything but if you ever listen to me, now is the time. If you enjoy bully or RH you need to read this because it was amazing.
When I grabbed The Replacement by Christine Kelsey and Cassie James, I have to admit I thought I was just reading another bullymance novel that would turn into a reverse harem. Other than that I wasn't sure what I would get. Turns out that this book has a twist as the main character is, in fact, an AI robot designed to look like Piper Hawthorne. The real Piper Hawthorne died at the end of the year at a party and now her parents have paid an up and coming scientist to create a replacement for them as Piper 2.0. She has all of Piper's memories and the questionnaire answers uploaded to her system and was created to be a comfort to those who lost Piper. However, when she arrives at school Piper's friends are anything but happy to see her. In fact they are disgusted and start a plan to get her to leave as if they can't have the real Piper then a replacement won't do the trick. The guys have their turn with her and besides Jude the Jerk, the others Brennan and Tyler are actually starting to develop feelings for her which of course, they are so worried about their image and status as the kings of the school that they won't be honest. As the book goes along, we see that Piper 2.0 isn't exactly a robot as such as she is starting to develop her own personality along with Piper's which should be impossible. What happens though when just as she is starting to get things rolling at school and finding her way in the world, Piper's real mother Jackie isn't happy as she wants her daughter back not some machine as wasn't the AI supposed to be a replica of Piper, not her own person? The Replacement ends on a major cliffhanger which had me grabbing from KU Book #2 The Proxy to see what will happen to Piper 2.0.
I had the opportunity to read this for free, and this is my voluntary, unbiased review.
Whilst, personally, fantasty/paranormal isnt my instant go to style, the trope of bully romance is, so thought I would give it a go.
The book begins at the start of an imitation Piper being woken - a silicone replica of a girl who died, programmed with information about Piper, her friends/family and factual life.
She is created to help ease the emotional loss of family and friends, by "being" Piper, however it is soon very clear that whilst she has the facts of Piper's life, she is her own being, a sentient with her own conscience - one that is clearly different from the life she is imitating.
This becomes more apparent when she interacts with her 'friends' - ones who don't want her there and are not hasty to show it.
I'm quite a factual person, so I have a few cynical questions left unanswered and possibly there are no answers to give, however the authors do a fantastic job of creating a character that you are able to connect with and humanize, and the descriptive accounts of both the characters and the situations are very well thought out with an easy-to-create picture for your mind.
I loved all the MCs, the boys all with different flaws and traits and the MFC with her strength under the vulnerability she portrays after each attack.
The ending though..... get the advil because that's one mighty hangover!
Omg!! So this is the first book I’ve ever read by Cassie (I know she has her Sinners series and I definitely need to read them) and I was so blown away by it!
The writing was impeccable, the story kept me interested and invested in the plot and the characters, etc! There was steamyyyyyyyy scenes that I obviously loved, and I just adored the FMC. This is a tough thing to write considering the Artificial Intelligence factor, and I whole heartedly can say she did an amazing job of it. This is the first book I’ve read that included an AI, and I am SO INVESTED now I need book 2 RIGHT MEOW especially after that cliffy! Haha.
If you read this baby, you WONT be disappointed, I promise.
I did receive this as an ARC, but as usual all opinions are my own! 🖤
This book was spectacular. Like honestly, it was amazing. I've never seen anything like it. Props for originality author! The ending gutted me. Hopefully no long wait until the next book, which I will definitely be reading!
I just finished this series. It grabs you from the start and keeps you reading. I love that the POV is so divided between all the main characters where you feel like you actually get to know everyone involved and not just see things from one side of the story. I love sci-fi and I love romance but I do not always like the mix of the two. This story does not delve into the science aspect of AI too much nor does it really matter or beg the question of what is realistic. It is a work of fiction and presents itself thus. The story is good and you never really feel like you need more explanation. The writer does a great job of character establishment and delving into all the characters personalities and feelings. I do not want to give too much away but this was a good read, enjoy.
Hot damn! This was amazing, completely different to anything else in the bully RH trope and entertaining for every step of it. ‘Piper 2.0’ is the product of rich and grieving parents attempt to lessen their pain, she is not quite the replica they want her to be and she grows and develops her own personality over time, defying everyone’s expectations along the way. The bullies actually kind of have a decent reason for hating her at first sight, and that just adds a new complexity to the story. ‘The Replacement’ is not a story I am likely to forget, and I will be counting down the days until I get the sequel ( that cliffhanger was killer).
My goodness, so let me start off by saying that when I was checking out this series I skimmed the reviews to get a feel of the story and was quite upset that one reviewer I saw gave a 1 star review where ther gave up the cliffhanger, not cool dude, not cool. That alone made me want to read it, just to see how off they were. And man they were off. This book pulled me into this story and would not let go. I really need to see how this series is going to play out. I feel so much for Piper and the way she's been treated.
I Give this book a 4 out of 5 Star Rating. No Spoilers. Cliffhanger(?): Yes! This was absolutely fascinating, well written, and AI-Piper was very likable, and all the guy POV’s were so important! The moment I started reading it, I couldn’t stop till I encountered that Cliffhanger hanger, which had left me biting my nails on what’s going to happen next! Looking Forward to Reading Book 2!
I think of all the cliffhangers I've had, this might be one of the most dangerous and painful. I'm terrified and heartbroken for Piper. Gosh, I loved how unique this setting is. The dynamics between all the characters and Piper is very fascinating to see. I really really can't wait till book two comes out, but there's also a sense of dread (spoiler alert so I won't go into it) loved this book and I love 2.0
Totally bitter that this fell flat. This was actually such a weird plot that I instantly was intrigued. A replacement for the girl people loved, envied, and hated? It’s a hell yes. This could’ve been great if the authors really fleshed out the story. What we actually got was a rush of romance, lame bullying, and a crazy mother. BUT, I love the concept, so it’s a 3 stars from me.
Wow, I didn't like this book at all. To be fair I am not a fan of most bully romances. That being said this story irritated me because I really like sci-fi. I like the idea of making a A.I. robot the MC, but I need more character development for me to relate to care about the MC. Otherwise, I am just going to look at a robot as a very human toaster. Robot replacement "Piper" is an companion A.I. programed as a glorified emotional support pet for the people who knew the real (and dead) Piper. Pipers Parents decide its a great idea to send their robot pet to school (this make no sense). Of course those who knew the old Piper are horrified and pissed that there is a replacement Piper. I don't blame them but how some of them reacted is just plain discussing. Calling her "Silicunt" and sexual harassing her while others watch and made fun of the MC. Tyler was Pipers boyfriend so I get the resentment, but Jude... there are not redeeming qualities to this guy. Character descriptions for the "love interests" (I use this loosely because these guys are just garbage.) were seriously lacking. I still don't know what these guys really looked like besides them being 'handsome'. Brennan was quite yet spiteful as well. You also find out that Piper was a mega bully and part of the in crowd called the thorns and roses. I made it about 20% into the book and just stopped caring. I couldn't relate to the MC in any way and it was disturbing how she was forced to be someone she wasn't. The MC is also forced to want to emotional help her 'friends' which just means that she is going to get abused over and over with no free will of her own. I also HATED all of the characters except the one girl who comes to the MC rescue. I gave this book an average rating because the author did warn that this book wasn't sci-fi but a bully romance. So if you like bully romances you might like this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Only rounding this up as I was super into the premise of this novel and then got excited when it FINALLY shun in the last chapter.
This book could have gone so many ways; the plot was extremely creative and had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it played out in arguably the worst way it could have...
I have three bones to pick with the author. Firstly, Piper (our main character), is by every definition of the word - a moron. Mind-blowingly so on far too many occasions. She's what I imagine a low IQ, human bodied and extremely horny SIRI would look like. For a learning AI all homegirl manages to learn is toxic patterns with the three equally pathetic incel male leads and never learning her freaking lesson. Her coding is the equivalent of the instagram algorithm when you first make an account and everything is all over the place.
Secondly, the misogynistic overtones of this novel are honestly foul. The two female antagonists whose names are as forgettable as they are - are so one dimensional and constantly derided by everyone as being nothing more than blonde, stupid and wh*res. The asshole male leads who bully Piper far worse than these two girls ever do are praised for their good looks and vindicated constantly.
Thirdly, the weird biweekly, triweekly, monthly, weekly timeskips in random places. They happened so frequently in places where there should have been tension, conflict and resolution. As a result Piper had little to no character growth and the pacing felt jumpy and all over the place. I really felt like we missed out on so many key scenes that were quite literally just omitted.
I'm likely going to pick up the second book just because this one ended on a cliffhanger and I'm filled with a kind of morbid curiosity. The kind you get when you watch a pimple popping video on YouTube...
I will start with saying that this story has captivated me and not let me go since I started the books a day ago. I have fell in love with every single character in these books. Each one is unique and fascinating in their own way. I found though that there were many questions left unanswered...how is she able to keep the Original Piper’s name and memories and the parents don’t make a big deal- fighting the contract? She wants to be her own person yet 3.0 still answers to Piper Hawthorne? The tech questions are never fully answered - the reader just has to assume. How is she able to have a conscience, feelings, humor, and so many other human characteristics? She’s passed off as a learning AI which I get but that doesn’t make the jump to understanding empathy and such. Sorry to be crude here but in all her check ups, the tech never really examines her vagina despite knowing thru her log that she has had multiple lovers. With her being used for sex so often why doesn’t he have to replace her juices which are used for sex ? Her operations were never explained either: how can she have an orgasm, get wet, be turned on, etc. If she can do all that can she become pregnant?
There were so many questions surrounding this series that I couldn’t fully get pulled into the story because I was making a list of alll the small holes the author (and others) miss.
I figured where it was heading and I can't say I'm surprised, but still utterly unethical and bollocks... Every character except Macie was a piece of trash, all of them unruly psychopaths and despicable humans. Not much of the past is fleshed out well enough to be consistent with the way the characters behaved towards the new Piper, and once shit started to hit the fan, the true colours of who they were was just wrong. I get that it was always going to be a disaster experiment, you can't expect grieving people to just accept an AI to replace someone who died, but the way they went about it from the start was wrong. I almost DNF'd it at 37% and it didn't get any better. The timing was messed up too, like Piper kept saying weeks and weeks had passed since she'd tried befriending these kids, but it was literally like two to three months. It wasn't very consistent. Everyone sucks, the story derailed and sucked, it was just not a fun experience.
So this has the potential to be loved. As it is, I’d be very happy for her to end up with Brennan and Tyler. Though she realistically didn’t spend too much time bonding with them.
There were definitely parts that I hated. Piper had her stupid moments. She was especially frustrating at the end when she finally had to face the consequences of her actions. I’m not even sure she fully understands that she’s the one at fault.
I wish she was capable of either being her own person or actually stepped into the role of Piper. I would have loved to see her live up to her promises.
I loved her interactions with Macie and how she was slowly learning, slowly getting comfortable in her skin. I did really like this book, but Piper is hard to love.
I really wish that I could say, this book was so great that it only took me 24 hours to read but it is not.
Straight off the bat I had trouble connecting to the characters. And the fact that it's an Android trying to be another person or pardon me the person that she was created to be. I don't know. It just made my mind stall. And then the way she was treated in the first couple chapters my mind kept on stalling on this.
Maybe I'm just in a book slump. But this book definitely hasn't struck my interest.
This book definitely goes to my dnf list.
Maybe one day I'll go back to it and read it again but so far I can't see that happening.
This story shocked me in the best way!! The meshing of the tech world and bully romance genre works tremendously well! This tore at my heart, filling a hole I didn't know I had. The FMC is written with heart crushing precision! I never put it down. I bet you won't either. The harem will make you squirm!!! ;)
Didn't know what to expect as the reviews were quite varied but I enjoyed this story. A learning AI? Pretty cool, although I did wonder about the ethics of it all. Piper 2.0 is fascinating. She's trying to be a dead girl but is also herself. I loved that side of the book. The bullying part is hard at times. And I don't think I like any of the guys... yet.
What? I mean... WHAAAAT??!! The main plot is so wrong and unautentic that I just couldn't finish that book. It was too painful to read it... In some world that could be material for some kind of twisted tv show for teens but NOT in this world. Sorry.
Freaky and Awesome. I read this book months ago and I am still freaked by the concept. I still can't decide how I feel about the MC. This is a must read!
3.5 stars/🌶️ - I was pleasantly surprised by this. The premise and characters were interesting and it was a memorable work in an often-repetitive genre.
I walked into this blind and knew nothing about the book beside it being a bully RH and holy moly…what a unique story. Probably one of the craziest cliffy’s I’ve read for a RH book too.
