I wanted to read the book after watching the documentary which I found incredible. I think it is a great read. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it can be too technical and a little hard to follow if you are not familiar with sailing. Even then, it is a great, inspiring story and the book does a great job in presenting Tracy as a person, with her ups and downs along the process. I got a hard cover version used on Amazon and the quality of the book is amazing and it has a lot of pictures, so I recommend this format as well.
Though the Kindle version has a lot of editorial errors it’s really all about the amazing story of this young woman, her battle to be seen, allowed to do what she loved to do and the incredible crew she picked and saw it through with her. Watch the awesome film too. A must for young women everywhere who dream to live fully. I was lucky to have seen the film, met the current crew and toured Maiden in Antigua, Traceys second home and ours too. Thank you AYC.
Exciting to read the action as it unfurled (pun intended) of this amazing around the world sailing race with an all-female team in 1990. I had seen the documentary which is also exciting and thrilling and has great footage. Speaking of which, I did wish the book had better photos and I know they were taking pictures so I'm not sure what that was all about. In any case, I'm going to read the book Maiden Over next, which I think talks about Tracey's post-race life.
Looking forward to introducing Tracy Edwards on HBA Leadership Day in a couple of weeks! Great book and good complement to the documentary of the same name. If you haven't seen it, do. So many great lessons about perseverance, grit, resilience, and leadership.
Such an inspiring story and a gripping read. Very candid, Tracy really lets you inside her head. You feel like you’re in the Southern Ocean with them at times!
It was no small vision to propel her project forward. Crafting the Maiden and an all women crew, to being Maiden's captain and sailing around the world winning a leg of the Whitcomb, Tracy Edwards' story continues to amaze and inspire.
Fascinating and hugely impressive achievements but I had got very little understanding of what it was like to experience it. Of course it’s of its time but it felt rather descriptive and detached.
Tracey Edwards skippered an all-woman crew in a round the world sailing ship race in 1989. The challenges and struggles make for an exciting tale. Edwards had an interesting life before and after as well. Video taken during the voyage was used in a documentary paralleling the book called “Maiden.”
