Pretty Good Advice: For People Who Dream Big and Work Harder

Rate this book
Straight talk and tough love on power, beauty, and the art of the sale

Called the “Queen of Beauty” and the most influential lone woman to impact the beauty industry since Estée Lauder by the New York Times, Leslie Blodgett’s story is anything but ordinary. As the CEO of the struggling Bare Escentuals, Blodgett shifted the company’s focus and launched bareMinerals. In a move that would revolutionize the beauty industry, she went on QVC and sold $45,000 worth of makeup in the first six minutes. Before long, she was selling $1.4 million an hour. In 2006 Blodgett took the company public in one of the largest cosmetic IPOs of the decade, and in 2010 the company was acquired by Shiseido for $1.8 billion. Pretty Good Advice provides beauty secrets, business tips, life lessons, and lots of personal stories. Some ideas are common sense. Some are pretty unconventional. Most importantly, everything in this book is honest, all tried (and sometimes failed) by Blodgett. Fun, frank, and filled with actionable advice, Pretty Good Advice is a glimpse into the unlikely story of a successful beauty executive who approached her work and life a little bit differently.

Called the “Queen of Beauty” and the most influential singular woman to impact the beauty industry by the New York Times, you’ve never met anyone like Leslie Blodgett. Not only does she do the splits on boardroom tables, as CEO and creator of bareMinerals, Leslie pioneered the original power of community (before the idea of social media existed)—reinventing how beauty was sold.

Her warmth, empathy and authentic bond with her global community of fans, along with her unconventional approach, set a new standard that continues to shape the beauty business today. In 2006, Leslie took the company public in one of the largest cosmetic IPOs of the decade, and in 2010, the company was acquired for $1.8 billion.

Pretty Good Advice is Leslie’s next chapter. This refreshing book features 97 candid and entertaining insights on business, life, and beauty. Everything in this book is honest, all tried (and sometimes failed) by Leslie. Personal and often surprising, Leslie dishes on leading with humor, and why “You owe it to your co-workers not to be boring.” Pretty Good Advice is full of frank, actionable advice to help light a fire under you.

For her efforts in reshaping the beauty industry, Leslie Blodgett was recognized as one of the “Top Entrepreneurs of the Decade: 2000-2009” by Inc. Magazine and was named the first female recipient of the “Visionary of the Year Award” by Women’s Wear Daily. Leslie serves on the Board of Advisors for Spanx and Board of Directors for Every Mother Counts and Stella & Dot. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and established the Leslie Blodgett Endowed Scholarship in the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology at FiT in 2012. Leslie is a regular guest lecturer and Humor Ambassador at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, and is a 2018 Stanford DCI Fellow. Leslie Blodgett is a beauty industry pioneer, angel investor, and philanthropist.

From the start, Leslie treated her fan base, the community she built, like family. She’s always been a part of a very small group- famous people who are grounded, down to earth and not unreachable. She’s made herself available to her followers and admirers, and this continues in Pretty Good Advice.
As I read PGA, I felt like i was having a conversation with a family member or a good friend. Leslie doesn’t come across as an expert looking down at her readers giving advice, but rather as a friend, sharing her story, the lessons she’s learned, and passing them on to us to help us in our daily lives.
I loved PGA because the stories, lessons, advice are all things the average person can use in their every day life. We’ve all felt awkward, embarrassed, we all have our “off days”. Leslie comes from a place of humor but with intelligent, compassionate words of advice.
She talks about everything, from growing up to developing her own brand, from her start with bareMinerals, her first time on QVC to becoming the mother and style/beauty icon she is today. She gives you a peek inside her life, her journey of turning her passion (makeup) into her now lifelong career, and what advice she received , and lessons she learned along the way.
PGA is such a great read, for anyone and everyone. It’s an all inclusive, feel good, get it done, here’s some pretty good advice to better yourself kind of book.

This was a cute book. I don’t think I’ve ever used a bareMinerals product, but hearing Leslie’s story and reading about her devotion to building a community through the brand is inspiring. I can’t wait to put this on a shelf in my future office one day 😊

Leslie Blodgett first came to my attention in an infomercial many years ago. She was touting her bareMinerals makeup, and as someone with a questionable complexion thanks to my then-undiagnosed Hashimoto's disease, I was interested.

Pretty soon I had a collection of colorful little pots that took up a lot of space in my bathroom!

Leslie's book is just what the cover tells you: advice across a wide variety of arenas, from business to self-improvement. It's a fast read, but it also feels like Leslie is sitting across from you and talking. Her authorial voice is beyond authentic.

If you only take away one or two ideas to implement, this book is well worth the price. My personal favorite was (paraphrasing): if you feel like you need a vacation, wear fragrance to bed. Why? Because olfactory memory is a strong sense, and fragrance can take you somewhere else. It works, friends.

As good advice should.

Pretty Good Advice...I’m going to say, it’s all pretty awesome advice. Just like it’s author, this book is overflowing with love, laughter and wisdom. This book is easy to read and good for the soul...like a letter from a best girlfriend. I have been following Leslie for many years, since her BE days on QVC and she is such an amazing individual. She is genuine and down to earth, and what I love most...so relatable. Throughout this book, you will find a variety of useful stories and advice...some funny, some serious...but, all helpful.
I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

After Leslie’s FB live tonight, I started this book and just finished it. I read it straight through and it spoke to me in so many ways as I knew it would. She touched my heart and my mind and I’m so very grateful for the gift of HER. She aspires, inspires and her generosity of both spirit and tangibles is overwhelming. I have adored her for many years and didn’t think that I could love her more...but I do. Thank you Leslie!

I am a long time user of Bare Minerals makeup, so this book was an interesting look into the life of Leslie Blodgett. I enjoyed all of the little stories; it’s like sitting down and having a conversation with a good friend. Even though I didn’t always completely agree with the advice, there really was a lot of pretty good advice.

Pretty Good Advice is written with the wit, honesty, and humor that original BareMineral girls have come to know and love Leslie for! The page layout and colors are even enticing you to keep opening this book. I know I will reread Leslie’s advice over again.

Just like the tittle of the book it was pretty good advice 🥰 i love how i was a relaxing read yet with lots of good advices & insight of life of a wonderful discovery woman 🫶🏼 To me while reading this she is such an inspiring woman the way she view life & works through her journey in life is admirable 🥹 some of the words in the book that i love & can relate ⬇️ + (The fact that She even taught me how to receive compliments 🥺 finally a book that give advice on that topic in the realistic & logical way✨)

“Early on I started to wonder who gets to decide who is beautiful.
The media has a lot to say about it. They put pictures in our heads to influence our thoughts and convince us they are right. They push their standards of beauty because that works—it sells stuff, and we eat it up. But the version of beauty we see all the time is just one part of the story.”

“Faces hold truths, they tell of life experiences, they reveal character and express emotion.”

“Don’t believe everything they tell you about what is or isn’t beautiful. It’s horsefeathers. The more beauty you see in the world, the more beautiful you become.”

“If someone in your home tells you to “snap out of it,” refuse.
Tell them you’re in a meeting of the mind.”

“Take pride in your first job.”

“with my mother’s nudging, I found some direction.*
And while I have tried my best to forget those times, I own them now. If you find you’re out there rambling, don’t feel bad about it. It doesn’t have to stop your journey; it can just be part of it—left turns included.”

“The truth is: I’ve spent most of my life trying not to disappoint my mother, and that has actually turned out to be pretty good motivation. Also, she was right. What was I doing with my life?”

“I like my bar in view instead of in the constellations. I like to see where I’m headed, so I can plan my attack and make my move.”

“Set your own bar, a bar you can reach. Then another. And another. And guess what we just made? A ladder.
Now, you can go as high as YOU want.”

“ Because many people have no idea what their passion is, and trying to find one when you haven’t a clue can just make you feel worse and waste your time. So if you aren’t delirious about something right now, don’t worry too much.”

“And then . . . I was on. Paralyzed with fear. Not wanting to be there. Which is the nature of risk: Risk makes you afraid. You don’t get to choose whether or not to be afraid. Only whether to dive in, despite your fear. If you wait for the fear to go away, the opportunity will go away too. I wanted the opportunity.”

“If you’re not already catching on, the secret is: I choose to be lucky. This is the best trick you can play on yourself. It’s like magic. I’ve been saying I am lucky for so many decades now that my luck has taken on an almost mystical quality. Really. I win raffles. All the time.”

“About five years ago, I decided to find someone who appreciated the lost art of exchanging letters. Someone willing to skip the chitchat and see what we could discover about each other and ourselves. A true pen pal.
I had some rules:
• Handwritten correspondence only
• No fewer than three pages per missive
• No emailing in between letters except to ask if the letter has been received
• For Your Eyes Only, so get personal. (If it isn’t personal, you are wasting a perfectly good John Lennon stamp.)”

“But when you need to ease the tension with an audience (and within yourself), nothing works better than reading the room and speaking your mind. For about four seconds, if you’re me. Then it’s back to the script. A little riffing goes a long way.”

“You need a sparring partner. Someone* you can count on to tell you that your idea is worthless, pointless, and vain. Why? Because you’ll see how good you are at defending it. If you are willing to fight for it, you may finally be spurred to take action—and prove them wrong.
So, find that special someone who gets your goat, and see how your pitch comes to life.”

“As it turns out, I have a very loud and somewhat grating laugh. Some people don’t like it, but I refuse to tone it down, because a hearty laugh feels great, and nothing good comes from stifling one—and because humorless people are no fun.”

“But I owned it, which always works. Because being vulnerable gets an audience on your side. Everyone’s afraid of something, and most people are afraid to admit it. When you own up, you own the room.”

“You can learn a lot by listening to a kid.”

“If you’re not ready to work through something, just forget it. Especially when the benefits of not remembering outweigh the hours of therapy to work it out.”

“If the memory is not useful, it doesn’t need to be remembered.”

I absolutely adore this book!!! It is smart and funny---two of my most favorite things in the world. So many laugh-out-loud moments, and little gold nuggets of advice that will stay with me for a long time.

So, I must confess that I picked up the book for sentimental reasons more than anything else. I share a hometown with Leslie, and we graduated from high school in the same class. Although our paths didn't cross much, I remember her as being popular. She was on the kickline, and I was on the softball team --- pretty different worlds.

I learned years ago about her immense success in the beauty industry. A famous hometown girl! There may have been several hometown people over the years who became esteemed public figures, but the only other one I knew about was Soledad O'Brien. Our town had two high schools, and Soledad went to the other one. Pfffttt!

At that time, I started using bareMinerals, and of course, I loved it! If I remember correctly, I reached out to Leslie after seeing her on QVC, and she couldn't have been more gracious and friendly in response.

We may have been very different in high school, but as I was reading, our similarities are the things that stood out. When some of a person's story is the same as yours, it makes you feel seen and understood. I have often felt misunderstood, so this was nice. I can imagine that this is why she was so successful. I, too, am an introvert (INFP). I am an avid reader and word nerd. I love to write. I'm a lifelong learner and can spend hours at a time down rabbit holes researching something I knew nothing about before. Also, I have a fear of lip gloss (public speaking). Lastly, the inside of my car is a mess.

I wish I had known Leslie better in high school.

I hope that Leslie sees this review and puts it in her notebook that she likes to read at night to remind herself who she is to this world. I think she is the real deal!

I have so much to say about this book, please bear with me. This book is beautiful with a hardcover, no book sleeve, and a fun array of colored pages inside. It looks beautiful and feels great to hold in your hands.

The format of the book is great because it has short stories with an application. I appreciated the easy, uncomplicated setup, and found myself flying through it.

Last but definitely not least is the content! Whether you know Leslie from the Bare Escentuals/QVC days or not, this book is worth your time. There are so many great business lessons included in this book from someone who revolutionized the beauty industry and used online community before it was “the thing” to do. On the other hand, there are great personal insights, too. Despite the short length of each chapter, there is a lot of depth to what Leslie provides.

All in all, I highly recommend this book. Just like it’s author, it is smart, genuine, funny, and fun.

I like that Pretty good advice is so easy to read. Leslie wrote it in such way that you will hear her voice as you read it.

I love how she is funny and most of all how she is so personal, as you read the book you will feel like you really know her.

One of the advices that resonated with me is the one to always pay attention since there may be a miracle hiding in plain sight.

I like how she describes beauty and how she just created a community and was an active part of it.

This book will be helpful to anyone looking to know something new or maybe not so new, and it will help you see how we are all beautiful and lucky and it all depends on how we choose to deal with the opportunities.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of Leslie Blodgett's new book PRETTY GOOD ADVICE. So many great tips, not just for young people but for (ahem) more mature readers as well. Her written "voice" sounds just like her real life voice--matter of fact, supportive, candid, confident, and street smart.

I'm going to give this to all the graduates I know this year (who are entering the world of work at such a difficult time) and also to some of my friends who are really struggling, as Covid19 upends the world they have known.

My only criticism of the book is it should be called EXTREMELY Good Advice.

What an enjoyable piece of literature. leslie’s first book is a great way to get her readers involved and thinking back to how she became a household word for many women when it comes to the cosmetic industry. She taught many how to choose, use and enjoy the art of makeup on an everyday basis. She shares what she learned along the way, over the years, and give us a glimpse of what her customers have taught her. She uses stories, life lessons, funny as well as daily life lessons learned. It’s not Pretty good advice , it’s Darn Great advice, no matter what career path you have chosen.

I've been a fan of Leslie's for several years and had the opportunity to talk with her face-to-face a couple of times. I always admired her style as CEO of Bare Escentuals. She put herself out there and really connected with her customers.

Leslie is genuine, warm, funny, honest and compassionate. She is me and you. Her book Pretty Good Advice is a gift in these uncertain times. She gives advice in a very down-to-earth way, it's like listening to a friend. She has been extremely successful in her own life and now shares her stories with all of us. A very enjoyable read.

I have been a massive fan of Leslie Blodgett for years. When I found out she was writing a book I knew this was going to be a must-read/must-own/must-share! I am here to say that every single person should own this book. I refer back to it often. The amount of times Leslie cracks me up, makes me think about how I'm choosing to live my own life and even provide comforting advice is seemingly endless. Each chapter brings a new piece of advice and sometimes that advice needs to come at different times in my life. I'll keep this one next to my bed for years. Thank you Leslie!!

Sometimes it's important to see others' perspective, especially those whose values and lives so different from ours. It helps us see beyond the boxes we unconsciously build. It helps the cherry picking tendencies at the bay. It helps us to be really really open-minded, not only a self-proclaimed open-minded we all like to think we are. That's how this book makes me, see others' perspective from a person I'd probably argue if I have the chance to talk to in person, yet makes me try to see only the universality and connection as a human, as a woman, as a hard-working person.

This is a cute book with excellent use of humour. It’s a quick read filled with snippets of advice blurbs. I liked the style of this book. I think none of it was revolutionary, which the author admits at the beginning, but it was a nice little reminder of seeing the good in life.
I think it would be a great book to give a new college grad or someone starting their own business as a quick perusal.

A bit cheesy (hence it losing a star) but I heard a panelist at a women in tech event recommend it two years ago. Finally working through my TBR and so glad I picked this up. A refreshing "professional woman" book written in bite-sized chapters that make it easy to balance other reads with. I also have always loved learning about how beauty companies are made and this was a different perspective into Leslie's founder mindset. Light and sweet to read.

This is a very pretty (aesthetically!) book, with thick pages and beautiful color and words with easy-to-read fonts. So, it's been sitting on my nightstand for about 2.5 years -- you know the kind... the book you'll "get to" at some point, but you'll leave it for later because it looks so nice in that stack and it's very instagrammable. I had no clue that this was written by the founder of Bare Escentuals (nor did I know that Bare Escentuals sold for $1.7 bn to Shiseido in 2010... wow!) so was pleasantly surprised to see some threads of entrepreneurship throughout. I don't think any advice within these pretty pages was earth-shattering, but it was a pleasant read and, like I said, very pretty to look at. 2.5 stars, rounded up for the tactile and weighty paper choice.

I loved this book. It's an easy read with pretty good advice. I watched Leslie on QVC for many years, she was so authentic, she made you feel like a friend and she sold a great product! She is an outside the box thinker and I like that. This book is good, simple life advice.

Short and sweet, this is a fun book with good advice. Leslie loves people and her lifestyle proves it. I like how her stories were interesting and to the point, and the language was clean.

I listened to this book while painting my house, so it was nice to have a peppy, positive friend to hang out with me for a couple of hours. :)

Enlightening and fun!

I’ve been a Bare Minerals addict for many years, and was a part of the “Leslie’s Angels” group. I purchased the book out of loyalty to Leslie Blogett and her wonderful Bare Minerals product. I didn’t, however, really expect to enjoy it. I thought it would be a dry, serious book on how to build an empire. Instead, it was a lighthearted look at Leslie’s fun personality, and how she used that personality to interact with kindred spirits, and build a business and a life that enriched the lives of those it touched.
