The second original storybook featuring the lovable characters who inspired the hit TV show on Disney Channel! Join Alice and her whimsical best friend, Unicorn, for their second all-new adventure. Alice's dog Max is used to leading a quiet life. But that was before Unicorn came along. Now every day brings a new magical misadventure... and Max is feeling a little left out. Until unexpectedly, the family's old dog starts learning a few new tricks. All of a sudden, Max is growing horns, his fur is turning pink and blue, and he's even hovering in midair! It's all fun and games... at first. But soon Max's magic starts getting out of control. Can Alice and Unicorn figure out what's really going on with that doggone dog?
Max had a great life with his family before Unicorn showed up. Now it seems like Unicorn is stealing everyone’s attention. That is until Max accidentally snacks on the wrong snacks and starts floating. Then he gets some attention, but Alice still seems distracted. Will Max’s life ever be ok again?
This tale of jealousy between an old pet and a new pet is very believable. I like the magical twist in the story, and how solving how Max developed magical abilities helps Alice realize Max was feeling neglected. There’s a happy resolution for everyone. Kids will absolutely adore the illustration style in this book. It is very eye-catching and fun. I like the reminder for readers that when a new pet or new friend joins the group, it is important to help the older pet/friends know they are still loved.
Disclaimer: this book was gifted to me by the publisher.
In this instalment, Alice’s dog Max is feeling left out when Alice’s new unicorn friend disrupts the family dynamic. Max suddenly develops some new powers, that make him feel special too.
As with the first book, I loved the illustrations. I liked that in the end, Max wanted to stay true to himself and Alice loved him just the way he was.
Oh crap, is this one of those books that is basically an adaptation of an episode from a cartoon? It is, isn’t it? They are always too wordy, yet still feel like they are leaving something out. This is the story of a dog who is jealous of the unicorn pet his family has basically replaced him with. Standard stuff for kids to relate to when they get a new sibling. The only character with any personality is the dog. Still, there are a couple of funny parts.
This is a fun book with lively illustrations that engage children. Max, the dog, so cutely expresses his longing to return to the close relationship he had with Emily before Unicorn’s arrival.
My students and I enjoyed a group Zoom read-aloud session with the author. The kids loved seeing her illustrations come to life right before our eyes. She even added elements to her drawing from audience suggestions. My students were thrilled! What fun!
Max and his owner, Alice, were doing just fine until Unicorn showed up. Instead of paying attention to Max, Alice now spends all her time with Unicorn. When Max himself somehow starts turning magical, he is only able to gain Alice's attention for a very brief moment before she's all concerned with Unicorn again. What can Max do?
This is a good example of a story that shows what jealousy can look like.
Max the dog is feeling a little left out since Unicorn came to live with his family. When Max starts doing magical things, the attentions gifts back to him and it’s up to Alice and Unicorn to help him. This is a cute book, but feels like it’s missing some important plot points. The illustrations are bright and colorful.
