A fun-filled chapter book series that answers the question: What if Frozen's Elsa went to regular school? Princess Lina's BFF Claudia is desperate for a dog. So Lina decides to use her Winterheart magic to turn a puppy snow sculpture into the perfect pet. But the magical snow dog has a mind of its own -- and it's running loose at school!
Christina Soontornvat grew up behind the counter of her parents’ Thai restaurant in a small Texas town with her nose stuck in a book. She is very proud of both her Thai and her Texan roots, and makes regular trips to both Weatherford and Bangkok to see her beloved family members (and eat lots and lots of Thai food!). Christina is the author of the fantasy middle grade series, The Changelings, and the early chapter book series, Diary of an Ice Princess. Her forthcoming books include the middle grade fantasy, A Wish in the Dark, and All Thirteen, a nonfiction account of the Thai Cave Rescue.
In addition to being an author, Christina holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Science Education. She spent a decade working in the science museum field, where she designed programs and exhibits to get kids excited about science. She is passionate about STEM (science, technology engineering, and math), and loves learning new things. She lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, two young children, and one old cat.
“Magic can solve problems, but it can also cause trouble.”
Lina is part of a magic royal family. Her granddad, who lives in a castle in the clouds, is the North Wind. Lina’s mother is also a windtamer (has power over wind and weather.) On earth, Lina has to keep her power as a Winterheart (power over ice and snow) a secret, only BFF Claudia knows about it.
Lina feels like magic is the answer to every problem. But her mother gets angry when she tells Lina to clean something up and Lina uses magic, which makes a bigger mess. When Lina complains to her granddad, he takes his daughter’s side. After all, he says, you don’t want to end up like your Great-Aunt Sunder. Lina has heard bits and pieces of that story, but no one wants to tell her the whole thing. All she hears is “having magic powers is a big responsibility.”
Meanwhile, it’s Claudia birthday and Lina doesn’t know what to get her. Claudia desperately wants a puppy, but her father is allergic. That’s when Lina decides to create a snow puppy for Claudia, which is exactly how all the trouble starts. Will she be banished to the South Pole, just like Great-Aunt Sunder?
Lina wants to get the perfect present for her best friend's birthday. Claudia really, really wants a dog, and, luckily enough, Lina discovers that her winter magic can bring snow to life! Lina makes the most adorable snow puppy...but the puppy turns out to be a bit more trouble than the girls imagined. How to you train a magical dog made of snow?
This series is fun with a great combination of humor, everyday school adventures, magic powers, and a lovely message of self-acceptance. Plus, this series stars a biracial main character, is written by a diverse author, AND is a fantasy series--a combination very hard to come by in first chapter books. Recommending to anyone and everyone.
Lina, trying to come up with a good present for BFF Claudia, creates an allergen-free dog of ice and wind of life. The idea comes from a family history book about Great-Aunt Sunder creating snow beasts the same way. But Lina makes her snow dog before reading the end of the story, and soon ends up with a BIG problem on her hands!
This book is a very straightforward easy-reader. I do like that it's very tight - there is not a single idea or item that is mentioned only once, it all comes back again in some other context to tie everything together.
In the fifth book of this series, Lina wants to make something super special for her friend, but she ends up abusing her magical powers and making a living ice puppy that grows each time it eats snow or ice. Unfortunately this leads to a lot of trouble!
This was a cute book, my daughter enjoyed it. We just wish there was a picture of her pet! And we learned we can't use our magic to solve all our problems. Good thing we learned that lesson from here. Phew dodged a bullet there.
