On the surface, show business is a beautiful world, filled with beautiful people. One of these people is Mike Brown, press agent extraordinaire. Charming, talented, and utterly unscrupulous, Mike leads a wild and hectic life. Whether he’s in Times Square, pulling a publicity stunt with scantily-clad women, or hustling his way across the city, picking up clients and going to meetings, Mike is always on go — and always on the job.
Larry Walters, Mike’s ruthless genius of a boss, knows he can count on Mike to seal the deal, no matter what it takes. Sometimes, that just means handling difficult clients. Other times, it means dealing with sex-crazed directors, drug dealers, social climbers, aspiring actresses, socialites, neurotic celebrities…but no matter what comes his way, Mike wouldn’t change a thing. After all, there’s no business like show business!
Hype! is an intense, exciting novel — a lurid glimpse behind the curtain, beneath the glitz and glam, into the sordid underbelly of the entertainment industry. From cult favorite Len Levinson (called a “trash genius” in the pages of Paperback Fanatic magazine), this new edition features an all-new afterword from the author!
Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Len Levinson served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957, and graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Social Science. He relocated to NYC that year and worked as an advertising copywriter and public relations executive before becoming a full-time novelist. Len has had over eighty titles published and has created and wrote a number of series, including The Apache Wars Saga, The Pecos Kid, The Rat Bastards, and The Sergeant. After many years in NYC, Len moved to a small town (pop. 3100) in rural Illinois, where he is now surrounded by corn and soybean fields ... a peaceful, ideal location for a writer.
Len Levinson was himself a press agent in his younger years. In this novel he attempts to expose the underbelly of the profession. And he does a great job. It is clear that the job requires a very special kind of intelligence. I’d never thought of it, but this is a type of occupation that is dependent on the character of the people you represent. If they go off and do something really stupid, you’ve got the mess on your hands. And there are plenty of idiots on display here. I relished this novel and am quite glad I read it.
This book was written in the late seventies and there some areas that are dated, but the story is marvelously current as all people behave in similar ways to those you actually know. It seems people never change.
