Rebecca Elliott is the author and illustrator of the best-selling Owl Diaries series (Scholastic US) & over 20 picture books including Just Because, Sometimes, Naked Trevor and Zoo Girl, for which she was nominated for the 2012 Kate Greenaway Medal. Her new series The Unicorn Diaries (Scholastic US) & her first YA novel 'Pretty Funny ' (Penguin Random House) are out now.
In this installment, Eva wants to shine as the star of the play, but must deal with being cast with a small part and being an understudy. While the book followed its usual cuteness where everything works out, I wish Eva really would have had to let others take the spotlight in this one.
For: fans of owls; readers wanting a diary format and fun illustrations.
Possible red flags: lying and telling stories; stage fright.
Owl Diaries Eva in the Spotlight is such a nice and enjoyable book! Eva, the amazing owl, gets a chance to be in the spotlight, and it's so exciting. But guess what? There's a funny disaster that happens, and Eva's sister comes to the rescue. I love that part so much!
In this book, Eva gets to play the role of Snow White. How cool is that? But wait, they call her Snowy White in this story, and it's a little different. Eva and her friend Lucy are costume makers, and they work hard to create amazing costumes. Eva is also the understudy, which means if anything happens to Sue, she gets to be Snowy White. It's like being the backup, and it's an important role too.
Do you know what's really important in this book? Mirrors! Mirrors can fall on the floor, and you have to say, "Mirror, mirror on the wall." Oh wait, no, that's not right. In this book, they say, "Mirror, mirror on the floor." And then you have to ask, "Who is on the floor the most of all?" It's a little silly, but it's all about Snow White and her mirror, you see.
Now, let's talk about what I learned from this book. I learned that sometimes accidents happen, like mirrors falling on the floor. But you know what? We can find a way to make it funny and turn it into a joke. That's exactly what happens in this story. Eva and her friends know how to handle unexpected situations and find the humor in them.
In conclusion, Owl Diaries: Eva in the Spotlight is a hilarious and magical adventure that will make you laugh and keep you entertained. Eva's journey to be Snowy White is full of funny moments and unexpected disasters. It teaches us to find joy in the little mishaps of life and to be ready to step up when an opportunity comes our way. If you love stories about friendship, humor, and a touch of magic, this book is a must-read. Get ready to shine in the spotlight with Eva!

I've got so much to say about this book. Watch my full review on my YouTube channel to hear all my thoughts. https://youtu.be/9AbDNXssSbM
My kid loves Owl Diaries, but this is probably my favourite book in the series. I liked that Sue was portrayed in a less one dimensional way, and that Eva wasn't the star of the show (at least not entirely) and that she faced a conflict, asked for help, and got through it.
It seemed longer than many of the other Owl Diaries books (in a good way), and if this is the direction the series is going to go, I'm glad.
I love this series. I love the format and all the color, but how each two page spread is still simple and focuses on the text which is supplemented with pictures. The way it is broken into chapters and the fact the first chapter is always an introduction, and the last always a form of summary. I like how it also has comprehension questions at the end. It is a cute story and I liked the characters and illustrations. Cute book, a series I would definitely recommend.
“Sleeping Hoot-y! Alice in Wing-derland! Jack and the Beak-stalk! The Wizard of Owl!”
3.5/5
Eva and the class put on a play of Snowy White and the Seven Owlets. Sue gets a bit of redemption in this one, but she’s still kind of the worst. Cute owl puns and fun, colorful pictures.
Possibly my favorite in the series yet. :-) Love the grandma & grandpa characters, and there’s a depth to this one more than the first twelve. As always, the sweetest illustrations and lovable characters.
This book took us a little longer than the rest because we got distracted by some cool new picture books, but Clara LOVED this one! It is about Eva’s first play performance and Clara loved reading about he acting and the play!
Eva and her class is going to perform Snowy White and the Seven Owlets as a class play. They each will have a part in the play, and a job to do behind the scenes! Eva really wants the main part, but doesn't get it. Will the play go as planned? Either way, the class is determined to make it fun!
Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Eva's Grandpa Owlfred is away for work, and her Granny Owlberta is feeling sad. Eva hopes she can get the lead part in her class's play to cheer her grandmother up, but instead she ends up being Sue's understudy. A solid installment to this series.
I enjoy reading these sweet, quick books. My sons love them, too. I started this one with my seven-year-old, but then he finished it on his own, and I had to find out what happened with Eva!
J loves this series of books and is happy that our library has new titles available (diary style, cute drawings, cute characters, fun and quick to read stories) (3rd grade)
