I lost everything in the fire, then I was whisked away to this Academy for Shifters.
I don't know anyone, I don't like anyone, and I definitely can't trust anyone.
And they don't even know that I have a secret...
I'm not supposed to be here. I'm not a Shifter. I'm something else.
All the while these five young men stare at me with primal hunger...

Interesting enough to make me want to continue on with the series but nothing yet that has grabbed me. Curious to see if she is a late bloomer shifter or something else entirely
The book was okay, but it was really short and very disappointing for 3.99. I like the plot well enough but it didn’t feel like a cliffhanger to me, it felt like it just wasn’t finished.
I was so antsy to finish this book just so I could talk about how bad it was.
50 books (50 on Amazon, 38 on Goodreads) of this? I can't imagine doing that to myself or imagine anyone who would. So much of the book was just exposition and world-building, which would be fine if it didn't take up 80% percent of it.
Not to mention how all 5 of the love interests act too similarly to one another. Ren? Handsome and distrustful. Theo? Handsome and distrustful. Enrique, Jasper, and Dracus? All handsome and distrustful, with very few quirks to differentiate one from another.
I will admit that the mystery grabbed me, and it's why I powered through it anyways, but the payoff of finishing it wasn't worth it, and I refuse to pay $3.99 repeatedly for the other books in the series just to get some semblance of a complete story.
This is like the first few pages in a book. It introduces you to characters and a mystery, but then ends and entreats you to buy the next book for 3.99. was it good? I'm not sure I had enough story to go on to judge that question. I think for now I'm going to see if I can find a whole book somewhere else to read. Maybe I'll come back to this, maybe I won't.
The story follows a very common theme. Girl loses parents and gets taken to a boarding school/ academy. Lots of good looking boys. Ok story but very short book. Not worth $3.99.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for the next book. You immediately sympathize with the FMC and hope she finds what she needs at the Academy. There is a mystery as well as a possible romance maybe. I am leaving a voluntary review for an advanced copy of the book.
Fiona was rescued from a fire that killed her family. The rescuers believe that she is a shifter who simply hasn't experienced her first shift yet. If she is, it's news to her as she believed herself to be, like those who raised her, completely human. Now, she's in some mysterious academy full of various animal shifters and feeling completely lost.
This was an interesting little short story that I picked up while it was free on Amazon, believing it to be a full book. (It turned out to be only 63 pages.) The story was interesting, but ended on a cliff hanger and far too soon. While I will admit to being curious as to what happens next, I probably won't continue on with the series as I expect that the other books are also far too short for me to feel they're worth the expense for me to buy them. (I finished this one in a couple of hours at most & was left feeling like there should have been much more.)
The series has 40 books in it and it appears that each book is $3.99. If each of those books is also only about 63 pages, it's not worth it for me to want to buy the rest of this series, no matter how much I respect how hard the author may have worked on it. I'm happy to pay more for a full length novel, but not for something that feels more like a sample or a teaser to me.
But I'll keep my eyes open in case the series ever goes on sale. The concept was interesting, though there were a few dropped words here & there. It just wasn't interesting enough for me to want to buy 39 more sets 63 pages for almost $4 each. As much as I love a good story, I'd rather buy a $10+ novel than a $4 partial story.
This has GREAT potential to be AMAZING!! Mystery, clearly potential love interest…. BUT that’s where it ends.
The world building is lacking pretty significantly. The description of items, people, places, scents, colors….are just not there. For instance something simple like - the library. It just states she goes to the library and into the basement section. Ok - tell me about the library she is literally suppose to be in a friggin castle- is it Belle’s library and the Beast is excited to show her or is it my 3rd grade library where I played Oregon Trails on the crappy block computer???
Then the odd passage of time and broken forward progression. This book needs probably a few more chapters in just character growth and development. More character depth, interactions, thoughts and insight into her visions…it just simply fell short and honestly gave me the impression this may be a new author - very green. Full disclosure, I have done no research into the author, I’m just calling a spade a spade. This needs work.
There were also grammatical errors that disrupted the flow. So it needs to be edited more closely.
So all in all, the idea is great! The author has a great concept! I think because I love the idea and bones of the story that I am MORE mad/invested. It’s so close to being good! Just needs a bit more TLC. Had the potential to be 5 stars.
I think I’ll attempt book 2 to see if the above issues get resolved!
At fewer than 100 pages, this can hardly constitute a book. Compared to most real novels, this would traditionally be considered an introduction. You know, that bit where the characters and setting are introduced, and the transition to actual plot begins. I'd say I wasted my money, but this first "book" was free.
Secondly, the number of grammatical errors in so few pages was atrocious. Get an editor. Periods after dashes and before question marks, singular words where plural should be used, and the wrong tense-- sophomoric writing at best. That's not even considering the basic plot. Obviously, it's not a seminal work by any means-- there's hardly enough story to make any judgment of this as a collaborative novel anyway.
... and most of the other reviews indicate that this series is a never-ending waste of time and money.
What's in this book? The reader is introduced to Fiona, the main character, whose family (you read in the prologue) has been killed and she's taken to a school for shifters. She slowly remembers elements from her past while being tailed by 5 gorgeously amazing shifter boys.... who are hiding "things" from Fiona. Fiona tries to fit into the academy and research the school.... and that's book 1 in a nutshell.
There's a lot of promise in the writing, but the execution is flat and the content is but a poorly executed whisper of a story.
Fiona loses her parents and her home in the same night. She is rescued by unknown entities that take her to a school that is specifically for shifters. She comes to find out that she is supposedly a shifter herself even though she doesn't think so. The boys she is housed with seem to be knowing stuff about her but want tell her what that is. Dracus is the leader and the oldest of the council of boys and he turns into a dragon and supposedly is a prince. Then there's Ren who turns into a wolf but doesn't seem to like Fiona for some odd reason. There's Theo who is the friendliest and he turns into a bear and is the one we first meet when she is still in the medical wing of the campus. Also there's Enrique who tries his hardest to be a ladies man. As she is navigating around the campus she is getting visions of something that seems to be her past and hopefully in the next book we will find out what that is. This book ended with her meeting a mysterious stranger that wants to know about her birth mark. That has me intrigued in seeing where this series is going.
What a way to start a series! Academy of Beasts 1 starts out with a bang - well, a blaze, and it doesn't let up. This first book introduces us to some of the characters as well as the Academy, and since it is a serial, we don't get very many answers yet. The story is told from Fiona's perspective, and it's full of mystery and a bit of danger. Add to that the fact that Fiona is surrounded by shifters - handsome shifters - and this is shaping up to be an exciting shifter serial. Becca Fanning gives us a variety of shifters in this one, and then we have the heroine, who is surrounded in mystery, and it all came together to leave me impatiently waiting for the next edition of the Academy of Beasts. This first book has the feel of a young adult story, but the characters are college age, and the blurb does promise a reverse harem romance, so I would say this serial will fall firmly into the new adult category.
Needs editing! On page 29, "I shifted my backpack onto both of my shoulders as we made the trek up to school.", but on page 31 you have "I didn’t even have a backpack!" "Maybe I could talk a hot shower and melt underneath the spray of water." is another example where editing is needed. One more example where editing is needed ".when the prince wasn’t pleased with his favorite breakfast before the rowdier dorm mates show up for the meal.?" I have to wonder if the author bothered to reread or have others read her books before she published them to catch grammatical errors. It pisses me off that you're asking people to pay $3.99 for a very short book with errors! Even without the errors, it's too much money for such a short book. It is a shame since the story was interesting. All those errors ruined it for me. I have no intentions of continuing the series. I might consider it if it's released as a whole book or boxset with editing!
It was interesting enough to make me want to read more…. And then more.. and then more. It was addicting to keep reading to find out what happens. I read this in 2020. It’s now 2023 and I still think about this book series.
What sucks the most about this series is the price. It’s free for this first book, which draws you in. Then it’s $3.99 for 60-100 pages per “book” with almost 50 “books” in the series. If the author wasn’t so money hungry people might actually read this series.
Also if you plan to read just know the author drags out everything. And I mean everything. It’s like every book in this series is equal to 1-5 days worth of plot. It can get a little annoying. But the story itself is so freaking good I kept reading.
I stopped after “book” 19. The cost just couldn’t be justify. Merge the books together. 1-3, 4-6, etc for $3.99 ea would be justified. But paying 3.99 for 50-100 is robbery.
Having gotten hooked on paranormal books after reading Harry Potter and Twilight, The shifters of Beast Academy are quenching my thirst for new and unusual situations and Becca Fanning is just the author to write them for us. Fiona has never shifted and doubts that she is a shifter of any kind but after losing all she is whisked off to Beast Academy where she is thrust in with the elite Core Council. She is meeting lots of people who are more than strange to her and has been experiencing visions of her own. This is the introduction to the Academy and the into to some of the main characters and it proves to be a very exciting series. I can't wait for the next book to see who Mr. X might be. This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy
Novella #1 of 50. Wow. I'll probably borrow the next on kindle unlimited, but wouldn't buy it. This first installment is totally confusing. The writing style reminds me of bullet points or an episodic screen play. From what I can gather Fiona is found by shifters after surviving a fire and her parents' murder. They tell her she is a shifter too and she has a symbol on her back. She's brought to a walled Academy and put into a dorm house with several men who basically tell her nothing substantial about being the a shifter. As time goes on she has strange headaches and mysterious flashbacks of her young childhood with people who are not her "parents".
⭐️1.5 Maybe I'm being generous, but I felt like I'm rating it this only because this could have been a cool story. A shifter school of dragons, foxes, wolves, lions, and bears. With a main character who doesn't remember her past. Yes! This needed to be longer than 80 pages, and I don't understand how this series is 50 books! Can't the author combine books 1-4 to make it longer and capture the readers interest? There were a lot of errors and times when I thought I was missing sentences because it jumped from one thing to the next and got repetitive. Should have DNFd, but it was short, and I got it on stuff your kindle, so why not try.
This is a voluntary and honest review for an advanced copy.
This was a good start to the series. I am not a fan of series with cliff-hanger endings, but this was a short story which is why i agreed to read and review. It leaves you with more questions than answers, which means it has done its job in wetting my appetite for more!
There is not much to review on, but i can say that i like all the different characters so far and i really do need to know more about them and where to story is going to take me. I will just have to wait until the next one is out!!
The book was good. It kept my attention. A couple of problems I had was that Fiona didn’t morn like I thought she should about her parents death, not being able to see her friends she may have had and was ok being taken to the Beasts Academy somewhat. I would have put up a big stink if it was me. Second I was disappointed that it ended so quickly. I looked to see how many books were after this and saw at least 8 in this series. Seriously, combine the books. I will not continue this series because of how many books are in it.
This was a disappointing first episode in what should be a serial story on Vella. Not a whole lot happened. Things are disconnected, there’s a lot of gaps with no explanations. This really isn’t a novel at all. It’s not even a novella. There is no story arc or climax. This is just ramblings. The characters are one big mystery that just grows more annoying as the story progresses. Reading the rest of the series is an easy no. And don’t get me started on the grammar. And the story was supposedly written in past tense, but there were a lot of slips into present tense.
4.5 stars This is the first book in a new series and it is a face paced, short read that will keep any reader absorbed from beginning to end. Fiona is grieving the death of her parents and is taken away to the Academy where she is surrounded by a variety of shifters and she has no idea why she is there. Filled with drama, suspense, courage and a lot more. This is one that you need to read to believe and I cannot wait for the next. I volunteered to read a copy of this book.
This is a good story, the characters are witty and sometimes aloof. I just think that the price is to high for how short a time it took me to read. 24 books in a series is a little much. I could see 8 book-with 4 of the little book in 1-that would be worth the 3.99 or even 4.99. The story kind of took a hold of me, definitely had me intrigued, but I could see where I would lose interest in it quickly.
It was a big mistake to check this book out on Hoopla. The story is choppy, a little generic, but okay. The problem is that the book is only 80 pages, and it looks like each of the subsequent 9 titles are that short as well.
I don't approve of books that are clearly drawn out to make more money. All I would lose is Hoopla checkouts, but it shows a real lack of professionalism from the author. A series can certainly last 9 sequels, but not at 80 pages per book.
3,5 rounded to 4 —> Quick read quiet entertaining so far. Not long so can be grabbed in and finish it quickly (cpl hours) Quiet interesting so far we are yet at the story building. Great it has multiple shifters (dragon and wolf are my usual favs) but here Mr Fox seems to be one of a mystery man (luv it) So no concrete opinion yet but entertaining… Will see as Im defenitely wanna continue…. Hmmm I just saw its a never ending story… let me read the feedbacks for a later number…
I like Becca Fanning, I do. But I bought this book before I realized it was only 78 pages long. You can’t get much story into 78 pages. And it’s really not worth the money to pay almost $90 for the whole series SO FAR. Thus this book will leave you with more questions than answers.
I would rate it higher but maybe I need to read the next one to get a few more questions answered. The beginning had an amazing hook but the suddenness of certain events and their reactions felt forced and unreal. I feel that the characters could have had a tiny bit more depth, maybe then some interactions would appear more natural. Overall, I loved the plot but might hold on the second book.
I don't think I will continue the series. there was some poor editing going on with words in the wrong places, like for when the from was called for and numerous issues with tenses being way off base. I could forgive that, but ending the story before the plot is really even hashed out or giving any kind of resolution to any part of the story just chaps my ass.
I guess I should have checked the page length before I started reading. No wonder it finished so quickly. So much left unsaid, as a reader you can only hope there is more to the next book. Maybe it’s because it was free, maybe, not even sure about that at the moment. Ha, anyway, might be a good story if it actually had substance.
