WYRD: The Wild & Weird Adventures of A+B Part 3: Malaysia & Singapore
-1-
We were, once again, taking off into the uncertainty and all we could think about was landing in Malaysia. Even though, it had never been a location either of us really wanted to go, in that moment, we were longing for it. But first, we needed to get to Beijing. After everything that we had been through, we never thought that we’d be so worried and terrified to fly into China. But after twelve hours of being stranded in North Korea, we just couldn't wait to get it all over with. Kuala Lumpur was calling our names. We were just praying that we would make it there in one piece. We still had no cell reception, so we had no idea if things were even resolved. For all we knew, the North Koreans were just taking matters into their own hands and experimenting with all of us. I guess we would find out soon enough. Thankfully, it wasn't a long flight, but the two hours felt like an eternity. My eyes remained closed for the majority of the time and, for the first time, Boris was the calmer one out of the both of us. After about an hour in the air, I began to relax a little. But I was still wound tightly just enough to continue gripping Boris’ hand on top of the armrest. “I think we might be okay,” I finally broke the silence trying to be optimistic. “No one has shot us down yet, maybe we might actually get to Beijing.” “We’re fine, don't worry.” I was starting to let my face match my mentality and loosened my grip. “You're right. I know, you're right.” I turned back towards the window and hypnotized myself with the movement of the clouds. We heard some mumbling on the loudspeaker and rustling through the aisles. We took it to mean that we were getting ready for landing. As soon as the wheels touched the ground, we felt an emotional release. We made it. We had escaped North Korea.
Currently, wandering the world, creating magical stories, and writing them all down to share in the new fantasy nonfiction series, WYRD: The Wild & Weird Adventures of A+B.
"It wasn't about the activities that tourists did that made us feel like we visited a country, it was about what the locals did." ~ ~ Returning to "WYRD: The Wild and Weird Adventures of A+B" feels like catching up with good friends. Again I felt their positive energy and open-mindedness in every sentence. ~ This series of travelogues always makes me feel like I'm traveling with them. Part 1 made me visit Japan without having ever been there, Part 2 took me to South and North Korea and Part 3 showed me Malaysia and Singapore. This book (and all the others) were given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. ~ I love the way these books are written. It truly gives me the feeling of looking out of the authors eyes and even more importantly taste the food she is describing. Food takes up a big part of the series and I can totally relate to that. Not only am I a foodie myself but I'm also a vegan which makes finding this kind of food difficult in some places. And, I as well tend to remember places in connection with what I ate there. ~ I also love to blend in with the locals. "When in Rome, do as the Romans" totally applies to the way I go on vacation. Just like them I like to look behind the scenes. ~ This series is perfect for the traveling foodie. The next part is going to be about Cambodia and I'm really looking forward to reading this one as I've been there a couple of years back and have fond memories of this country. ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫/5 stars.
"So far, being without a house only further deepened our appreciation for every place that sheltered us, if even for a night. And every time we left, it was like departing on our journey all over again."
The journey of my two favourite backpackers: Aleks and Boris, continues! After their overwhelming stay in North Korea, they finally land in Beijing, narrowly escaping the lockdown of sorts of the land, and they start their journey towards Malaysia: a journey that comes very close to Aleks's heart as she had hoped before when she experienced Malaysia a couple of years ago, that one day, she would visit it again with the love of her life. Basically, with Boris except she didn't know who it would be with...! As our backpackers go back to being alone again after experiencing Korea with others, they are both happy about it. Except Aleks is also overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions after their rollercoaster journey. Ending their journey to Malaysia, they make their way to Singapore. Along the way, they get opportunities to house-sit and so many other signs that symbolise how they're at the right place, moving on to other as universe guides them to. This book has a prodigious amount of life lessons to offer and experiences to share, compared to the other two, that I might just have a favourite!
Something about this book just stood out for me: even when Japan was a joyous read and South Korea/North Korea was a nerve-wracking read that only let me relax for a moment because... pAraNoiA... but just something about this book stood out for me! From the very first page, Aleks makes sure that she holds the reader's attention within her grasp. She weaves every word with beautiful and simple magic that makes the reader bewitched under her magic. I don't think I will be able to connect with any other travel diaries except A+B's because I don't think I will read another one which explores every emotional conflict and interaction in a journey, in the way it is done amidst the pages of this thought-provoking book as Aleks does not focus only on the positive experiences but she also explores the negative ones and accepts them. Maybe, not as gracefully every time, but she accepts it and it's so profound that it deepened my connection with their journey! Also, the fact that she somehow managed to make me literally drool over my cultural cuisine because of the way she weaved her words exquisitely about Indian cuisine. Look, I adore my culture's cuisine but she somehow manages to induce temptation for the food I have daily. Even right now, writing about this while remembering vividly about her and Boris's love for Indian cuisine is making my mouth water. IT'S NOT FAIR, ALEKS!
I loved this read and I connected with this in a way that I will never be able to properly put into words. As Aleks always says, it is truly a fairytale for adults. It's the kind that will always fill you with joy and hope, knowing that whatever journey we agree to take on, it will always be worth it. And so much more! I absolutely cannot wait to read about their next adventure: Cambodia! I am currently angry with you @itsyagirlaleksandra for ending the book with a cliffhanger, it does little good. I am constantly overthinking and not all of the scenarios that my mind brews are good! Nevertheless, I love you so much. xx
I will never be able to thank the author enough for making me part of her journey: her words are built entrancingly to be a looking glass that transports me to journey beside them- except for the benefits of being able to eat the mouth-watering foods! Still, I am so thankful for everything, including the review e-copy you provided me nearly 4 months ago!
