Can Tamsyn cook up a spell to solve a famous author's murder before the killer strikes again?
It's Tamsyn's first solo gig as manager of the Pinecroft Inn's kitchen after Aunt Gwen skips out for a once in a lifetime cruise right before the start of the island’s big literary festival. Tamsyn thinks she finally has a handle on the whole magical cooking thing, but her confidence turns to panic when a famous author dies after eating the treats she'd prepared for the festival’s fancy-schmancy afternoon tea.
Whatever caused his demise, the author's ghost isn't talking. The same cannot be said for Lillian, the newly manifested spirit of a feisty flapper who is making herself at home in Tamsyn’s bedroom. Between the lonely ghost and her demanding feline familiar, Tamsyn hasn't had a moment of quiet in weeks. Is it any wonder she might have made a few mistakes when baking her cake? It's not like she expected it to turn deadly!
Even as suspects start to pile up and it turns out there's no end to the islanders who might have wanted the victim dead, all eyes remain on Tamsyn and her lethal lemon cake. Will her absolutely-not-a-boyfriend, the charming Dr. Caldwell, come to her rescue with lab results that clear her name, or will it be up to Tamsyn and her coven to cook up a spell to reveal what really happened at the tea before a killer can strike again?
I'll be honest, this book was so heartbreaking in a way. Tamsyn feels like she can confide in no one for pretty much the whole book, and that was so sad. I hoped and hoped that'd she'd gain the confidences she needs to trust in the people around her that obviously care about her as a person not her short comings. She is going to go great places in this series, so much potential personal growth.
This mystery was multi-leveled and I didn't see the full 'end story' coming at all. There was plenty of world development and character growth throughout the whole story. I look forward to many more adventures with this crew, and discovering more about their magic.
This story has LGBTQ elements, they play a huge role in this book and overall were done okay.
I got this as a freebie (audiobook),that has nothing to do with my own willing opinion. I about died laughing. So far this series is great. I recommend it!
I enjoyed this book. The characters are developing nicely but Tamsyn needs to gain a little more confidence. The mystery was well developed and kept me guessing until the end. The narrator does a wonderful job once again with the characters. Her voice is pleasant to listen to and she seems like a natural storyteller. I am looking forward to the next in the series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way, I have been influenced by anyone.
3.5 Stars. I’m enjoying the series so far, I think that Nicole St. Claire has done a great job at bringing this series together, I know that this is only the second book, but it’s starting to look a little more promising than the first book. I know that this series has a long way to go and I’m excited on seeing where Nicole plans to take it. I thought this book was an interesting one, I couldn’t exactly figure out how I felt about it, but I did find a few things that still unsettled me a little, for example I know that the kitchen at the Inn ends up being closed and whilst the girls cleared it up they still couldn’t use it, they never got the full clear from the sheriff’s department that the kitchen could be used to cook in again, yet when Tamsyn’s Aunt came back from the cruise early she was cooking in there…. For me this didn’t make much sense, I know that in some ways this is a small detail, but at the same time it’s a major factor because of the kitchen being closed off as it’s technically part of the investigation of the author who dies at the Inn… It would have been nice to have had some clarity to it all. Another thing that unsettled me was that again, I still found that whilst I was reading through that I would lose concentration because in some scenes there was way too much information when at times it just wasn’t needed. A few things that stood out to me that I did like was that I could see Tamsyn was growing as a person and the fact she confined in her coven about the fact she’s not a Kitchen Witch like her Aunt thinks she is, I thought that was a brave move on her part. The fact that she’s got her coven beside her and are willing to hear her out, I love that. Yes, she might still be new to the area even though it’s been years since she lived on it, but the fact she has people to turn to when it comes to her being a witch it’s a great thing. I also loved that once her Aunt came back, Tamsyn finally confined in her, I know it was a matter of the fact she couldn’t hide anything anymore but at the same time it’s not like she tried when her Aunt was away. But I’m hoping now that she’ll keep talking to her Aunt and actually ask for help when she needs it. I do think the plot was good and the characters were likeable, the writing is pretty good too. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next with Tamsyn and everyone on the island.
Tamsyn is being left in charge of the Inn for three weeks as her Aunt is going on a cruise with the rest of her coven. Tamsyn is scared that she may do something that will harm the Inn, but she is still going to do her best to look after the Inn. When she receives a call about hosting a big afternoon tea which is part of the islands big literacy festival, she starts panicking as she’s not exactly known for her cooking skills…. But not wanting to let anyone down, she agrees and as she’s not messed any magic up in a few weeks, she’s eager to succeed in the task. However, things end up going down hill when special guest who goes to do a speech at the tea party ends up dying on the spot it looks like Tamsyn is in trouble and the kitchen to the Inn is shut down? Will Tamsyn be responsible for his death or will she find out there was someone else who was responsible?
I enjoyed the book. I have listened to book one and think it helps to know the characters but it isn't essential to enjoy this book because it could be read or listened to as a stand alone. I liked the way the author combines witch craft with murder and the plot plays out very nicely. I chose my suspect very early on and was proven right, so there isn't any real twists to the plot but I enjoyed it all the same, especially the checky ghost cat. The characters are fun and quirky enough to be entertaining. All in all a light hearted cozy mystery that gets solved by using magic, although it doesn't always go the way they are expected. With her aunt off on a cruise Tamsyn is left in charge of the B&B and also the food for the writes festival. When plans change over hurt feeling when a guest speaker agrees to speak, Tamsyn agrees to host the party on the Pinecroft grounds and instead of catering for thirty people she finds herself cooking tor 130 people with a whole new menu because of allergies. She reorganized the rooms for the demanding writer to have an executive suit and she has to enlist her coven sisters to help and hire staff. Then the unthinkable happens and the guest speaker dies before his speech. Was it something Tamsyn served him? The police seems to think so and closes down her kitchen while they investigate. Was it a spell gone wrong, Tamsyn's cooking or posion? The guest speaker use to live on the island and the mostly suspects are his so called friends, the newspaper writers group but why would anyone kill him? With the help from her friends and a ghost from the 1920's can Tamsyn uncover the secret that got him killed? Or will her aunty return to find she is out of business? I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job with all.the different voices needed to make this story so enjoyable.
This book gets 3 stars because It’s a lovely middle of the road paranormal mystery with the usual ingredients to make it do. Easy reading and good writing which makes it engaging. There’s a love interest with Dr Noah Caldwell the vet and good friends who are Covent sisters and a delightful aunt.
There is nothing outstanding but lots to keep the reader reading with a charming characters including a whodunnit when a grumpy writer’s drops dead. Question is was its Tamsyn’s lack of potion skills or somebody else’s dastardly deed?
The central character Tamsyn is a kitchen witch, except her kitchen skills aren’t that good. But her ability to contact the house ghost and her immortal cat are good. And Tamsyn is amateur sleuth, with a 100% track record that the sheriff doesn’t appreciate.
One might find Tamsyn’s insecurities annoying, I did. An example being she couldn’t share her fears with her friends or aunt. Tamsyn speaks to the Flapper girl ghost Lilian. And she Tamsyn is a witch but is scared to share!! 🙄
But I’m eagerly waiting for the moment the immortal cat 🐈 talks. It’s gotta happen, perhaps in the next book.
I loved watching the development of the main character in this book. Tamsyn starts out with an utter lack of confidence here, and who can blame her? She only just found out about the family magic about two months ago, is still trying to understand that and regain her own balance, and she is thrust into more and more difficulties. But she addresses them head on and learns. I really enjoy watching her interact with Lillian especially. Can't wait to read the next one!
I enjoy the first book but this is even better that the first one. Love the excitement that the author puts into her writing. Recommend anyone that enjoys reading mysteries to read these books by a wonderful writer.
Love Tamsyn and her magic awakening, her coven sisters and magical family. The mystery added to mayhem she starts with her discovery keeps the pages turning. The trouble for me is all those wonderful food mentions recipes makes me soo hungry lol
Thoroughly enjoyed this series! Excellent writing, fun plots and alternating laughing out loud and silly smiles that make my roommate say, "read me THAT part" and then we collapse in giggles.
First read of 2021 finished. I really like these books. Light, easy reads/listens. There are 4 in the series right now (I believe), following a new witch. She gets herself into some scrapes but also has a knack for solving murders. 📚📚📚📚
Omg finally some LGBT characters in a cozy! I've been reading cozies for years and never have a read one. Thank you so so much. I guessed the killer but it didn't ruin the fun at all for me it was awesome to see all the working pieces come together. Amazing! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I read the first book for free and bought this, the second in a series. Taken has recently discovered that she is a witch. But, her attempts at kitchen witch dry are mostly dismal. Could she be a different sort, and if so, what type?
Tamsyn is left in charge of the B&B while her aunt goes on a cruise. When a famous author dies during a literary festival it appeared to be an allergic reaction to something that Tamsyn made. A mystery and lots of magic.
A light read that really leaves you hooked. The characters are well written and interesting. One of my new favorite series and will be recommending these!
I loved reading this book, except for all the missing pages!! There are some pivotal scenes where I have no idea what happened. I have no idea what happened at the very end of the book. What was in the trunk?? Argh!!! I will continue to read the series in the hopes that I will be able to fill in blank spots.
I received this ARC for a review. This is book 2 in the series, and the first book I have read in the series. Not having time to read book one, I dove into book 2. Tamsyn is a new kitchen witch and, after failing at her last job, has returned home to her aunt’s inn. There she is learning kitchen magic. Unfortunately, her aunt has planned to go on a cruise (a 3 year in the making trip), leaving Tamsyn to provide the food for the author’s tea event during the Summerhaven Literary Festival on the island. Tamsyn and her aunt perfected the menu before her aunt left for her cruise. Tamsyn is later told that the guest speaker has allergies to most of the items on the planned menu. Tamsyn now has to create a new menu. She is aided by the flapper ghost and her cat. The menu is approved and when she goes to the venue to purchase the new fruit preserves with the shop owner, she casually tells him why she has to change her order. That is when the shop owner finds out he is not the guest speaker (as he has been for years). To find out who killed the guest speaker (that’s in the book description), you will need to read the book. Will Tamsyn be accused of poisoning the guest speaker? Will the shop owner kill him out of vengeance for not being the guest speaker? Will it be someone else? I purchased the first book because the cool cover caught my eye. The description sealed it for me. I joined her newsletter and voila, was offered the chance to read book 2. Ms. St. Claire combines humor and mystery in this story. Her choice of descriptive words paints visuals in my head. Definitely a cute cozy to read with some tea.
Tamyn is going to hve to deal with the inn on her own. As her Aunt Gwen is going on a cruise for three weeks. Tamsyn is still having problems with the kitchen witch magic, which she has hidden from her Aunt. Once her aunt leaves, all chaos happens. She will be hosting the author for the festival, he has food allergies that she didn't know about. Then the other place pulled of hosting the full event at their location. She will end up having them there. The guest speaker ends up dead, it looks like the food that she made killed him. So the sheriff shuts down the kitchen. Tamsyn is thinks that either the food or her magic might have killed him. Noah also wants her to help with a bake sale for his clinic, she isn't sure if he has feelings for her or not. She seems to mess things up when they are together Tamsyn is still dealing with the ghost Lillian, seems that their magic combined makes for interesting stuff to happen. Tamsyn will take it upon herself to solve the murder on her own, so she can clear her name. There are alot of secrets that are just below the surface, including her own.
Love the slow build up to her and Noah, am hoping that they start a relationship soon and love they dynamic of the coven. Love the dynamic of all the characters. Look forward to the next book in this series.
I received an ARC copy of this book, this is my honest opinion and review.
COVENS, CAKES, & BIG MISTAKES is the second book in The Witches of Pinecroft Cove series. Though each will stand on its own, I highly recommend reading both that have been released and in the order of release.
This was a fun, entertaining, and enjoyable listen as I puttered back and forth to work. Between the humor and the light mystery it is absolutely my cup of tea. Just hold the poison, please.
Narration: Stephanie Murphy is a wonderful narrator with a sweet voice. While most won’t be bothered by the mispronunciation, I do need to mention that the word library has two Rs in it. Since the word is used several times, it became like nails on a chalkboard to me. Not enough to bring down my rating of the book, but I did want to say something since I know that reviews help the authors and narrators improve their crafts.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: COVENS, CAKES, & BIG MISTAKES Series: The Witches of Pinecroft Cove #2 Category /Genre: Cozy Mystery, Witches Recommended for: 14+ due to vocabulary & murder Listenability: OK for most ears Received from: Nicole St. Claire (as an Audible gifted copy)
A good read. Okay it floundered slightly in a place or two but the overall plot was a good one although I must admit that i figured out the culprit and the motive about halfway through. The characters are great but there doesn't seem to be any explanation for the type of witch that she is and neither does she seem to be eager to fidn out her family history. But the feuds and conflicts both personal and interrelationship were what made this a good read. Her aunt has gone on a cruise but she thinks she's got everything under control. Wrong! A bombshell hits her. The Literary Society shindig is going to be a lot bigger and she's got two new guests coming. However when the keynote speaker dies, she has her kitchen shut down, her guests (apart from one) leave, she volunteers for the bake sale, petty thefts rise, a new ghost haunts the Inn, she loses her current one, more people fall ill and she outside her actual power to her coven. Can she find out who is behind the illness and the death? Will she get rid of the new ghost and retrieve the old?
I love the characters in this series, especially Tamsyn, who is often as awkward as I feel. We also share a passion for solving mysteries and are not quite at home in the kitchen. I am looking forward to finding out more about Tamsyn’s magical abilities and spending more time with the coven and all the fun characters living (and not quite so alive) on the island. What a fun, cozy series! Just one warning - make sure you have some yummy baked goods ready handy, as you will be craving lemon cake and snickerdoodles while you read!
I loved this book. It was a great read that captured my interest from the moment that I started reading it. It moves along at the perfect reading pace which makes it an enjoyable read as you are not running into slow areas, has characters who are so real and lifelike that you feel as though you know them personally and a story that will grab you from the moment that you start reading all the way till the very last word. This book has to be read their is no doubt about it.
