Just when Brandon Ross gave up on the woman he'd always wanted, he found the one he needed—right under his nose
A politician's son, Brandon reined in his desire to serve his community for years after a former friend blackmailed him for desiring the man’s wife. Years later, he's still haunted by Kayla, holding every woman to her standard. And Brandon's secretary, Amberlin Evans, knows she can’t measure up.
Amberlin would do anything to make her boss notice her. But when one phone call from Kayla sends Brandon running after her, she knows it's time to stop waiting for him to see her and move on. Funny how her resignation gets Brandon's attention in a way short skirts didn't.
When Brandon confronts Amberlin, he realizes that he's been blind to his feelings for her—and that the way she always calls him Sir and says "please" has his thoughts turning wicked…
Shayla Black is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances. Her books have sold millions of copies and been published in a dozen languages.
As an only child, Shayla occupied herself by daydreaming, much to the chagrin of her teachers. In college, she found her love for reading and started pursuing a publishing career. Though she graduated with a degree in Marketing/Advertising and embarked on a stint in corporate America, her heart was with her stories and characters, so she left her pantyhose and power suits behind.
Shayla currently lives in North Texas with her wonderfully supportive husband, her daughter, and two spoiled tabbies. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, gaming, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.
Shayla is at it again! As part of the Wicked Reads series, which features the Wicked Writers in all sorts of short novellas, Ms. Black is treating us with a novella from her Wicked Lovers series.
Remember Brandon from book 1? He is Morgan's brother. Also, better known as Jack Cole's good friend who basically thought he was in love with Jack's wife until, after betraying his best friend for a woman, she left him too. He's been heartbroken for years, thinking he wants her back in his life, and not seeing what he's had right under his nose.
Kayla has been Brandon's secretary for three years. Three years that she has fantasized, loved, and hoped that Brandon would notice her. But that was not to be the case. She's known Brandon was in love with someone and when she strolls in his office and they go out for lunch one afternoon she decides it's time to move on with her life. She can't keep doing this to herself.
So she quits! And that was just the shock Brandon needed to finally notice Kayla. Proper, buttoned up Kayla.
After she quit, he followed her home. Thinking of only talking some sense into her. He was not expecting to have her shoved up against the wall and not able to hold off one second before he was inside her.
This story is short, it's hot, well, panty melting hot, but what didn't work well enough for me to give it five stars was the fact that in about 5 minutes Brandon went from 3 years of not thinking of Kayla as a love interest to not being able to live without her and considering marriage.
What a disappointment. I was really looking forward to Brandon's story and this fell flat. The story was way too short and I really didn't get any relationship between Em and Brandon other than he didn't want to lose her as a secretary and he liked the sex. The story was basically just about their sex but nothing else. The teaser about Kayla was just a big zero. This was really a nothing story and could have been so much more. : ((
Nice office sex between secretary and boss with Emberlin and Brandon. Brandon who is Morgan's half brother and the one who had the affair with Jack's wife Kayla. A little different since there is no BDSM or menage in this one. Just two people getting together and finding love that was right under their noses all along.
4 Stars. It wasn't very long, I knew that going in, but what there was was intense. The pervert in me just loves the way Shayla Black writes sex scenes in her books/stories. They stories aren't just written around the next sex scene, there is always substance, However, I love me a good bit of lovin', and while there may be some that are as good in delivering both there are none better.
Brandon was never going to get his own full on book, he's vanilla, knew this from Wicked Ties. I enjoyed this short piece of vanilla love. I'm glad I got to see him get a little something.
Keep writing in this series Ms Black, as the song says "I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough".
This didn't have any development. She quits and all of sudden, he realizes he can't lose her, they have sex, the end. I think the woman barely said two words.
While I enjoyed these stories they were both too short and made me needing and wanting more. I do not understand what I read, 2 different parts of stories? It felt like we were only given a piece of the actual Story for each one. I enjoy this series but this book or 2 stories was a bit of a let down on what I like in her writings.
2/5 stars--- OOF. This was very underwhelming, especially because my first novel by this author was pretty good. The two short stories lacked any kind of character appeal AND the smut was horrifically mid. It was a no for me.
I'm so confused on what i just read. It wasn't even substantial enough for me to get to the point, literally like 2 chapters worth maybe? We have Brandon who is friends with Jack Cole, a guy that we know and love from other books, and his secretary Em. We have a really short and fluffy story between these two.
Em has resigned from working for him because she think that he's still pining for Kayla - an ex flame of sorts, and her own feelings are clouding everything. Too bad Brandon has other thoughts in mind and it takes her walking away from him to realize it.
So from there we get a really quick 24 hours of where they make that decision to be more than just coworkers and it's as steamy as expected. Again though, so confused about what i read since there was no substance at all.
For some reason I don't remember who Brandon is or his connection to Jack, even after it was mentioned a couple of times. I think that might be part of why I didn't care for this one all that much. I also had a hard time buying into the couple. I find it odd that it took one woman to push Emmy over the edge to do something about Brandon. Found it even odder that she thought he was with this other woman, yet when sex popped up she was going to take what she could get. Then when interrupted and given time to think I found it odd that Emmy wanted to call things off. Brandon's role was odd to me too, instant attraction to Emmy when they met, but when he realized she was his employee he backed off. But after he thought he was going to loose her professionally he goes after her.
I just thought the whole scope of the relationship was odd, maybe because all of this happened in 30 some odd pages it didn't help things out.
This is definitely the weakest link in the Wicked Lovers series. There was not real plot. Not much tension. Brandon was attracted to Amberlin upon their first meeting but decided to only think of her in professional terms. She also felt an attraction. Three years later she realized that there wasn't ever going to be a romance between them so she quit her job without giving Brandon an explanation. He went after her to find out why she quit, he manhandled and bullied her in her apartment, she caved. They had sex in the foyer and Brandon decided she was the one for him. HEA and all that... That's pretty much it.
This was a short quick read. Brandon Ross who is the half brother of Morgan from book one of this series and Jack Coles former friend who sleep with his wife. Brandon reined in his desire to serve his community for years after a former friend Jack blackmailed him for desiring his wife. Years later, he's still haunted by Kayla. Emberlin Evans has wanted Brandon for years and after he gets a call from Kayla he is ready to move on. This short quick read was well written like all of the books in this series.
I can honestly say It took me a while to read the novellas and I regret that sooooooo much. Closing the gaps in the wicked series is so much fun. Reading about Brandon and Emberlin was so much fun. I loved the almost instant recognition that he was missing something significant with her. Their passion burned bright and fast. And I loved every second of it. I adore this series. I hope it continues forever.
Good to see Brandon back from book one. Good story but to short I would have loved to see more of them building their relationship. Maybe we can see more of them in Tyler's upcoming book. I love how this author always ties in previous characters and finds great ways to introduce new ones to build the series further. She is one of my favorite authors for the hot and sexy genre.
3.5 Stars My first Black and enjoyed it very much! This book is sizziling but the story was too short for me. I would like to have heard more about the characters. I will definitely venture to Ms. Black's other books as they say...once you go Black...no that was bad..
Is there anything as satisfying finding surprise attraction and chemistry? I really liked this story about finding out unrequited passion and love was in fact returned. I loved the fact that they had worked together for years even more.
