Reread 6/28/21: I love this just as much as the first time I read it! Still one of my favorite manga titles this year and SO excited for the second volume!
Original Review (3/22/21): Okay, this was A LOT of fun!
It's been some time where I chuckled/laugh this much when reading a manga. I actually would go back and reread some of the pages just so I could laugh again because I was enjoying it so much! LOL!
This manga was different than I expected as I didn't realize that each of the guys are a different age. Considering they ARE different ages, I wouldn't have expected for all the stories to really flow in transition as they did. However, the mangaka did a fantastic job of doing just that! It was like where one story ended another began, but without feeling jilted due to a different character's voice. It was really cool!
Hands down Hayate is my favorite followed by Takayuki and then Shun. It's interesting to me because out of the four guys, I felt it was the hardest time for me to "connect" with Souma. BUT on the other hand, I felt like I related to him the most. He probably has the most "positive" outlook on his clumsiness and found the way he reacts that said clumsiness to be smile inducing. LOL! I think overall his story was just a little bit slower paced then the others and felt like much didn't happen so I had a harder time connecting with his character, making me not super like him but not super dislike him either. I DO want to hear more of his story though because I feel is going to very much have an inspiring one!
The colored pages were AMAZING! The panels being in color and then the background of the pages being a solid color for every chapter was really something cool! I would be curious to see how this affects the manga industry because while it may look like a graphic novel in that it's colored, it truly has the flow and feel of a manga. The way they used color to enhance the pages was awesome! And the art of course is gorgeous!
I would be really interested to read the next volume! I know this will probably become a read I will read again if I need a pick me up or a good dose of laughter. These guys are just hilariously cool!
*(I received a review copy from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*
Asdfghjkl THIS IS SO CUTE AND WHOLESOME. Who doesn't love reading about cool dorks?? (Also the art is just 😍) I absolutely can't wait for the next volume~~
Indulge me as I pull back the curtain on the review process for my Goodreads hobby. I read 80% of my manga before falling asleep and then write the review in the morning after I’ve slept on it.
When I start to think about what to write and I can’t remember anybody’s name and have forgotten the name of the book, that is a problem. It’s a big flag that a book is equal parts boring and more boring for me.
This book thinks it’s a lot more clever than it actually is. It concerns four guys of various levels of trying to be cool who are not cool and the ways they interact with their peers and eventually come together. Apparently this is funny and if you think so, I am jealous, because I don’t and I wish I could have enjoyed it more.
I think, of the four, the only one who is even fitfully amusing is the guy who constantly messes up and then acts like that’s what he intended to do all along. Everybody else is really... not much of anything. The optimistic kid who laughs at everything is so annoying I wanted to brain him with a waffle iron.
The art is pretty good, I will give it that, and I like the way the stories eventually intertwine (at least if this turned into a BL book it might feel like it had a point). I can’t imagine that throwing these four together will save this book, that being said.
Ah, I can’t give this more than two stars. It’s a dull slog that felt far longer than its short length. If you look at this is the male version of ‘cute girls doing cute things’ then you might get a bit more out of it, but don’t hold your breath.
This is officially one of my favorite mangas I've read so far this year! First of all, it's in full color and the art is gorgeous! Also, I laughed almost the entire way through the book! It was so relatable (I have done many of these things), but the different ways each of the guys react to their goofs was so entertaining! I loved the way it transitioned from one character to the next without making the book feel disjointed.
I'm definitely going to be continuing with this series! I'd recommend it to those looking for a light-hearted and fun slice of life manga!
This full-color manga stars four different "clumsy-cool" guys: Hayate Ichikura (age 20, college student), the "embarrassed and introspective" type; Shun Futami (age 17, high school student), the "bluffing stoic" type; Takayuki Mima (age 27, working adult), the "unaware and unaffected" type; and Souma Shiki (age 19, vocational college student), the "self-accepting positive" type. Each guy is introduced with examples of how they manage to remain cool despite being awkward or clumsy, and each section transitions to the next guy by having the previous one bump into the new one. By the last few chapters, however, their paths start to cross in more significant ways.
This volume was super short, which was depressing, because it was such a warm and wholesome read that I didn't want it to stop. Nothing much really happened, but it was just so...nice.
It's tough to tell how long this series will manage to go on before becoming stale, but for now there's some nice potential in the ways the different guys might interact with each other. All of the characters had at least one moment where they admired one of the other guys for being particularly mature or cool - my favorite was probably Hayate and his awe at the way Takayuki didn't even blink at his own verbal slip-up (which he might not even have noticed). And I loved the way Takayuki encouraged Hayate.
I'm looking forward to finding out how well Volume 2 holds up. For now, this seems like an excellent warm and soothing kind of series.
SO CUTE !!! SO FUNNY !!! could not stop smiling throughout the entire manga !!! just lovely and clumsy boys trying to make their way through life— 10/10 can’t wait for the rest!!! 💖💖
The premise is four cool guys who do goofy, scatterbrained stuff and then try to play it off like they were cool the whole time. And well, that's technically what we get? I guess? Only the "goofy, scatterbrained stuff" was things like... reaching up to push your glasses back when you're not wearing any. Or pulling on a push door. Or accidentally playing your music without headphones in and not noticing.
Like... everyone does that???
But then the characters around these cool guys notice these little tiny things and go nuts for it. Like, how high are these peoples' expectations that someone reaching up to push back glasses they're not wearing is cause to squeal and gives them a boost to their mood because it's so unexpected and cute? What??
I feel especially let down because I asked our library to purchase this in the first place. I don't know, maybe this is someone else's sweet spot, but it just did not do it for me.
This was a random lucky find I had seen on Amazon that had great reviews so when I seen it at my local bookstore, I knew I wanted to check it out. The situations were completely relatable! It was like I was ticking off a personal checklist during my read through. "Yep, I've done that." "That’s definitely happened to me." "I still can't believe I did that." I can't wait for volume 2 to follow the boys & witness more of their goofy escapades. This was definitely an entertaining read that felt comforting. A reminder that we all need to just laugh off little mistakes, mishaps instead of feeling embarrassed. Life is already hard enough. Doesn't mean you should make it any harder on ourselves. 💜 💜 💜 💜
I said I love you to a guy I was dating right before hanging up the phone. We’d been dating about two weeks and instead of explaining it was out of habit I said ‘that was on purpose’ (it was not) then I hung up. I had to marry him to keep it from being awkward.
I was thinking about what to rate this because I really liked it and I wasn't really sure if it was a five-star. However, I wasn't able to forget about this book at all and I really want to continue on with the series so I did. Now I am waiting for the third volume.
We are following four characters who are handsome and clumsy at the same time. We follow two university students, one adult-office worker, and a high schooler. All of them were fun to follow and I am not sure who is my favorite out of them all. I think this manga would be great for a reread in the future!
this manga is seriously so freaking cute and lighthearted and heart-warming and relatable!!
I absolutely adore the main cast and I especially relate a lot to Hayate (though not cool, just easily embarrassed lol)!! I can see how people might find it hard to read due to secondhand embarrassment, but for me it was just really relatable I felt kind of called out at times LMAO
The art and the characters are cute, but it's all a little weird, because I don't know what this is supposed to be. Hayabusa files it under comedy, but for that it's not nearly funny enough. The humour falls flat in the mundaneness of it all. It wasn't boring per se, but I'm still kind of waiting for a point to this story.
I usually don't care for slice of life manga stories without a romance subplot, but this book is just too sweet and lighthearted to not enjoy. All four main characters are likable. I'm hoping for cringe inducing antics once they all become friends. The "secret" bonus chapters were my favorite parts of the book. They're funniest when interacting with each other.
This is the volume of manga I needed! A manga all about good looking clumsy guys?? I AM IN FOR THE LONG HAUL!! This was adorable, and I love how it's color coordinated. Can't wait to see how it progresses from here.
a very wholesome story of four clumsy boys that are learning to embrace that clumsiness. i enjoyed this read mainly because it’s so relatable to common goofs that we make in our everyday lives. can’t wait for the second volume to come out !
This was a nice light hearted manga about a group of clumsy guys who honestly reminded me of a certain band when they were younger. I definitely think the farther I get into this series the more I’ll enjoy it.
This was a cute in fun start to a series. I loved how we got to know each of them alone and slowly started to see how their lives overlap for the ending. They all have distinct personalities but also similar traits which makes for a fun read. Will definitely be reading the next volume.
This was really cute and I loved that each character had their own color scheme. There was definitely some second hand embarrassment at play, although that's kind of the point? The characters finally all connect right at the end, so I'm eager to see how they all bond.
