English title: I Am This Type of Woman

Another historical novel by 月下蝶影 and she doesn't disappoint! I've read a bunch of her stories and generally they're all pretty good, especially her historical romances.

The story follows our FL Ban Hua and the rest of the Ban family as they deal with society's condemnation of her as a woman with bad luck after she's had three engagements broken off. Even though in all of these cases, none of it was her fault, somehow she became the scapegoat for one of her fiancés running off with another woman or the early death of her first fiance. But our FL doesn't care about her shot reputation in town and continues to live happily with her family, who is well off and absolutely dotes on her as the apple of their eye.

What helps with their cavalier attitude is a series of prophetic dreams that Ban Hua has, where she dreams that her family is stripped of their Marquis title and demoted to commoners, some unknown party becomes the new emperor, and she herself is killed by an arrow shot to the back. Once some of the earlier events in her dreams come true in reality, the whole Ban family believes in her dreams an consequently adopts a very pragmatic attitude of trying to do their best to focus on surviving the future events while ignoring their shoddy reputation in the present as a bunch of idlers. For example, one immediate action they undertake is to bury some gold in random spots in the forest, so they have some money stored away if they lose all their wealth in the future along with their title.

I liked the FL in this one. Ban Hua is very true to herself. She's gorgeous and she's not afraid to admit it. She's not apologetic at all about not being skilled in the 4 arts and instead embraces her image as an uncultured woman, which is hilarious given the importance placed on these skills by society. She also doesn't hesitate to use violence towards the people who have wronged her, not caring at all about her public image. Also, I find it hilarious that after dreaming about her death, her first thought is that she looks good in white fur (she's wearing white fur as she's getting shot in her dream) and immediately proceeds to buy up all the nice white fur in cloth stores. That's just the kind of girl Ban Hua is XP

The ML is Rong Xia i.e. Count Cheng An, a highly regarded and handsome scholar who is the dream man for every young women in town. He first starts taking an interest in the FL through her unconventional actions, such as when he catches her burying valuables in the forest or when she gifts him a pheasant during the royal hunt because he didn't catch any himself. Of course, her unparalleled beauty helps as well. The more he interacts with her, the more refreshing he finds her attitude compared to most other noblewomen, and he definitely falls for her first. By the end, he completely indulges her, and even though he holds the all the power in the world, he's still willing to bow down to her.

The plot itself was pretty standard imo, as it goes from dealing with petty schemes from other noblewomen who are secretly jealous of the FL to throne politics between the crown prince and the second prince who are the main contenders for the throne. Eventually our main couple end up leading an army and here the story got a bit ridiculous, as I found the FL a bit too OP when it came to physical fighting abilities and military tactics. I read this part with quite some skepticism, as she's depicted as a beautiful and lazy character for most of the story and suddenly transformed into a Chinese Joan of Arc with amazing military prowess for this last arc. This last part felt very unrealistic and is the main reason why I'm deducting a star from my review.

Where the story truly shines is the attitude of the whole Ban family, including the FL, and how the ML indulges them completely even though everyone is expecting him to condemn the Ban family's lazy and at times inappropriate behavior. For example, the Ban family isn't very scholarly as they descended from a military family, and a couple of paintings and texts mean nothing to them. However, these texts and paintings that are casually gifted from the FL to the ML turn out to be absolutely priceless works from famed scholars and artists that were believed to be lost to time, and the FL unknowingly used some of it as scratch paper for doodling without knowing (or caring) about their value XP

Here are some of my favorite scenes from the story:

Like I said, the FL is very true to herself and doesn't try to pretend to be elegant

Rong Xia couldn't help but ask further, "What is the princess interested in?"

"Jewelry, the more beautiful things I see, the more beautiful things I like. "Ban Hua sighed, with emotion on her face, "Life is short. I feel distressed when I think that there are so many beautiful jewelries in the world that do not belong to me.

"Cough cough!" Ban Heng coughed several times. My sister, can't you just have a snack and not speak? Don't you know what's your reputation like? Still, dare to say that I like tacky things like jewelry, can't even pretend to be more elegant?

------------

Another example of her frankness

"Junzhu's archery skill is very impressive. Had you been a man, you would have been a remarkable general."

"That may not be possible." Ban Hua shook her head very straightforwardly.

"Why is that?" Rong Xia didn't see any slightest modesty on Ban Hua's face.

"Living in military camps is hard. If I were a man, I would have been the Marquis Shizi. I would be surrounded by pretty maids and lived in comfort. With such an enjoyable life, why should I deny myself and go to military camps to suffer?"

Rong Xia was silent for a moment, looking at the silly and spoiled woman in front of him, he laughed, "Junzhu is very frank."

"Life is only a few short years, so just do whatever is joyful." Ban Hua laughed, "Who knows which day that your eyes won't open anymore."

Rong Xia was still laughing, "Junzhu has clear view."

------------

when the FL sends the ML home instead of the other way around XP

When he was alone in the study, Rong Xia finally couldn't hold it, he started to laugh in a loud voice.

This was the first time a woman sent him home, it was really..... interesting

"You really sent Master Rong home?" Ban Heng was dumbstruck when he heard it, "Sis, were you being kind, or were you looking down on him?"

"What do you mean?" Ban Hua was baffled, "How did I look down on him by sending him home?"

"You, a woman, praised a seven-foot man as good looking, then you sent him home. He didn't give you a sour look, it's just because his temperament is good." Ban Heng shook his head and sighed, "Sis, you don't understand men, men value face very much.

------------

"Sis, since you are going to reject Yan Zhen today, why don't you make yourself look a little rougher, it will be easier for him to give you up."

"Rejecting is my business, but giving up is his business. Why should I make myself a drab for an unimportant man?" Ban Hua carefully used her finger to apply lip rogue. After making sure her lips looked rosy and luscious, she wiped her fingers clean with a handkerchief, "A woman's best years is more previous than gold. Someone I can't even remember is not worthy to make me waste so much gold."

"I am afraid Yan Zhen will hate you."

"Ch." Ban Hua snorted, rose up from the mirror. Her exquisite and luxurious dress was like a bright moon at night, so beautiful that one couldn't take their eyes off it.

"Many men and women in the Capital hate me. If he hates me too, he can start queueing at the end of the line."

In five years she might not even live, why would she care what these people thought? Ridiculous!

------------

the ML convinced the FL to marry him by praising her beauty XP

“So…. what do you like about me?” Ban Hua inexplicably felt she was the heartless scholar in the storybooks, while Rong Xia was the infatuated lady whose sincerity went unappreciated.

She touched her face. That’s not right, she shouldn’t have double standard just because Rong Xia was more good looking that Yan Zhen, she shouldn’t be that shallow!

“Junzhu is very pretty. The peach blossoms of the second and third months, the stars in the sky, the snow of the twelfth month, none of them is as beautiful as Junzhu.” Rong Xia pointed to his own eyes, “Junzhu’s eyes are like starry nights. After falling for Junzhu, zaixia feels there is no men or women in the world anymore, there are only people.”

Ban Hua…… Ban Hua felt her cheeks slightly warming up.

The way Rong Xia said it was so genuine, so unambiguous. It had been her wish to hear a man compliment her like that!

Those who told her she was adorable, quick-witted, more benevolent than ever imagined, were all bullshitting. Couldn’t they be straightforward and give her an honest praise? Was it very humiliating for a man to admit that he fell for her beauty?

She felt more and more appreciative of Count Rong. This person was both sincere and had good eye-sight, he knew to appreciate her beauty.

This was the best compliment in the world!

I enjoyed it. Ban Hua is one of the best fl I've read about. Ban family and their love for each other was so lovely to read. They made me laugh and cry. ML being devoted to her was well done. Also found out that it has a TV adaptation and saw its trailer only to realise that it's not faithful to the book. Such a good story and they couldn't even give it justice.

Title: I Am This Type of Woman

Both MCs are likable and well-written — the FL is strong, knows her worth, and is sharper than she lets on, which makes her really engaging, while the ML schemes constantly but never against her, loving her deeply. Their romance develops effortlessly, though it didn’t quite deliver the rush or dramatic punch typical of Chinese novels. While not my favorite work by the author, it was still an enjoyable read.

To be honest, the FL on paper sounds like just the kind of protagonist I hate. Lazy, relying on her beauty, mildly manipulative and difficult to romance.

I don't know how the author does it though, the FL comes off actually pretty well. Strong minded, but fair. Practical, but extravagant. I got a bit tired of how she/the author glamourizes beautiful people, especially considering how nowadays people try so hard to look or photoshop themselves into clones of the current beauty standards. Her languishing military powers that surpass career military officers was a bit unbelievable. But overall, I found myself really liking the FL, dreaming of the fl/ml dynamic, and overall enjoying the story.

If there's one moral to this story, it's live following your morals. Do good unto others. Be the best person you can be, but don't let external validation constrain you since they're ever-changing anyways. But also understand your limits. Power isn't everything, sometimes the best luxury is to be able to live a carefree life. Or to live.

The story was so refreshing in light of Trump in the US (after he's tanked the economy and the government and the American universities and American research). It's wonderful reading about inept, greedy, volatile dictators getting their comeuppance. The story in general feels like a wish fulfillment for an influencer-type woman. Someone who is beautiful and naturally incites envy and criticism (for fairly valid reasons honestly), finds someone who is enamored of her and willing to pamper her for life, rising above all her critics and turning around her reputation. Isn't that just anyone's dream? But honestly, how long can a relationship started due to love of the other person's beauty and novelty last? I sound like the face-slapped nobels, but honestly, they have a point. And this story is the exception that proves the rule. But that's ok, it's a fun exception to read.

3.5

When the story starts off with the father crushing tea cups, the brother threatening to have someone beat up, and the mother kicking open a door in response to their daughter/sister's engagement being broken off >>>

The Ban family's care for each other combined with their antics and ways of thinking is so entertaining. This lazy and extravagant family won me over. I love how when they realize they might lose everything in five years they just decided to bury some gold and silver but continue to live in luxury. Normally, this would be the start of some sort of scheme but not with the Bans. Especially love how when Ban Hua had the dream she resolved to just tell her family instead of bottling it up.

Ban Hua endeared herself to me as the protagonist. I liked how she embraces being vain, lazy, and not particularly bright. She likes to make the other girls jealous of her looks (most are probably jealous of her looks in combination to how her family spoils her) and won't back down from verbal arguments with them but at the same time she doesn't hold grudges and resolves to settle them then and there. Ban Hua being a military prodigy is a little hard to believe since the only person in the family with military experience died when she was young but whatever.

I liked the relationship between Ban Hua and Rong Xia. The progression of their relationship didn't feel unexpected, their banter felt natural, and how they cared for each other was so cute. Ban Hua would find childish things for him because of his childhood while Rong Xia would spoil Ban Hua like her parents did.

I felt like the story's treatment of Shi Feixian and Xie Wanyu was good. They were teenage girls that got into arguments with Ban Hua but I felt like their stories had satisfying endings and they weren't just relegated to "these girls were mean to Ban Hua so they must suffer and be turned into people that exist just to hate Ban Hua" and instead they make you feel for them. While Xie Wanyu and Ban Hua never become friends, I liked how their relationship didn't just revolve around teenage fights they had.

The story held my interest until around chapter 120. I felt like at the very end of the novel it started to drag. But overall I enjoyed the story and I felt like the characters were interesting, the Ban family being the stand out characters for me.

I tried a few of this author's novels but Eight Treasures was a bit boring and the translation of To Be a Virtuous Wife was seriously unreadable. This, however, was cute. I really liked the female lead. She's very likeable. Unfortunately I can't remember anything about the male lead or the romance lol. The female lead and her family are precious and it's worth reading just for them alone. It's a pretty lighthearted novel.

It is entertaining and worth reading, “I Am That Kind of Woman.” The female MC, Ban Hua, and the characters in her immediate family are refreshing. Their attitudes are unexpected from a family of renowned former generals. They are focused on family, enjoying the good things in life and are practically professional idlers. Underachievers and proud! It’s comical and keeps the novel mostly lighthearted in this palace power struggle genre. 5/5

I haven't done a review in quite a while, so I'll just toss in here everything that comes to mind.
I've read a lot of Chinese novels in the last year. There's just something unique about the plot structure of Chinese novels that vibes with my brain for some reason.
One of my favorite authors is 月下蝶影. I read "Ascending, Do Not Disturb" last year and my life has never been the same ever since.
The thing I like the most about her novels is the characters. They feel real. The have dreams and ambitions, they are funny and hateful, they are so alive in my eyes.
I loved the Ban family. Just loved. There's a constant sense of warmth and understanding exuding from the interactions between the family members. They laugh and cry together. Their antics are so silly, so lovable.
By himself, the male lead is not that interesting. What makes him interesting are the interactions between him and female lead. I love that we get to see glimpses of his childhood (it made me quite sad...okay, I cried a few times); it humanizes him. His life was truly empty before Ban Hua came. I love how he learns to become shameless, and how he treasures Ban Hua.
Ban Hua. Girl, I know you are married, but please reject me so I can move on. I love her. She is the definition of freedom, of not treating yourself bad for the sake of others, of enjoying life and what it has to offer. She is so cool, so awe-inspiring, so daring. But the one thing I like the most about her is her attitude. How she interacts with other characters who has wronged her before... I have never seen it portrayed before. Quite refreshing. She sees the world clearly; she never treats innocent people badly, she goes straight for the assholes' throat.
I also love a female character who can admit and flaunt her beauty. Maybe I am sick and tired of all the female characters that keep downplaying their beauty. Why can't a beautiful woman say that she is beautiful? I also think that the way the other female characters viewed Ban Hua's beauty is quite realistic. Jealousy, admiration, acceptance.
From time to time, the author would sprinkle some tings about sexism and it didn't feel like she was trying to preach at you.
The villains are still villains. Their motives are quite clear: power, ambition, greed, envy. Did I want to hate them? Oh, absolutely. Especially the Emperor. But these characters are not one dimensional, maybe besides the second prince, may he rot in prison for a long time lol. Many of the antagonists had a good relationship with the female lead halfway through the book. Everyone had a reason for their actions.
The last chapters were very hear warming. I love a happy ending.
Now excuse me, I have to watch the drama so I can continue to love these characters a little bit more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Ok this now my favorite Chinese historical romance. The writing and pacing is pretty smooth. I've a weakness for romances that can make me laugh and the characters in this book are both hilarious and lovable (oh God the Ban family and their shenanigans). The world building is not particularly novel, but there are occasional commentaries on human psychology and sexism as well that are very astute. This author does seem to have a type for female and male leads, and this is feels like the height of what that could be. I've read it twice already and will probably read it again.

Another lovely book from Yue Xia Die Ying. All the usual elements were present, but the female lead's family was a pleasant surprise. Reminded me a awful lot of Rebirth of the Malicious Empress.... there were so many points of similarities between the two... making it a mesh between Eight Treasures Trousseau and Rebirth of the Malicious Empress.
