They call him the Bane. She calls him her hero.

Maude never considered herself weak-minded, not until she woke up hearing a voice inside her head. Now she’s dealing with alien captors, a bio-mechanical organism infecting her body, and two brutal suns frying her skin. Oh, and time is not on her side. Her sole ally is a towering Teras alien who steals her breath with his brilliant smiles and heated gazes. She desperately needs to get home, yet her savior is stealing her heart.

Therion Borac is many things. His mother’s darling. His father’s hellion. His house’s bane. Never an honorable man. When his house calls upon him to rescue an abducted human woman, he’ll eagerly save the lady but won’t hope for anything more. With crime lords and powerful Teras organizations threatening Maude, he knows she’ll need a scoundrel at her back more than she’ll need an honorable man at her side. For Maude, he will gladly remain the Bane.

Bane is a science fiction romance with action elements, crude (oh, so crude) humor, tender moments, and steamy close encounters. Contains explicit themes and is intended for adults only. No cheating. No cliffhangers. Characters battle for their hard-won HEA.

This book is just flat-out great entertainment. Funny characters. No re-treads. Interesting world building. Secondary characters that are capable (and often do) steal every scene they are in. Complex establishment of long story arc. Loving this series.

This is the second book in The Ladyships series. Since I didn't read the first book, I was a little bit lost at first with the characters and concepts mentioned but it all was made clearer as the story moved on. Nevertheless, perhaps it's best to read the first book to know the background (I'll be certainly reading it).

I won't describe the plot, just say that I loved the main characters but not from the beginning...I thought the heroine to be the typical vapid "good" person, too good to be believable and sooo gullible, and the hero was totally crazy. But the author did surprise me with the complexity of the characters, they had many layers to them. Maude is underestimated in her compassion and it is actually her true strength, compassion and empathy, and I ended up loving her view of the world and her understanding of people. Therion has become one of my favorite heros; he's also underestimated by everyone as they think he's got no loyalty and nobody takes him seriously. He's crude, crass, unpredictable, totally hilarious, but all that is a mask that covers an unbreakable loyalty to his house, his family...He kept me smiling the whole time I was reading, as well as all the secondary characters (the whole Borac family won't leave you indifferent).

The story line about the athelas and technopaths was engrossing and I'd love to know more about that, in fact it grows more complex the more you read, so it will make you want to read the next book in the series...I hope it's about the Culler, my goodness, I loved that one!

So, I highly recommend this book if you enjoy science fiction, an intelligent plot, but you fancy something lighter to cheer you up.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Such potential. Entertaining story with isolated stand out characters but lack of flow and a female lead character who falls under TSTL just didn't do it for me.

Send in the clowns

Maude knew something was up when she woke up with fancy new metal. And we aren't talking piercings. Nothing on Earth looked like what was currently wrapped around her. The second clue was the giant lizards, and, hey, the fact that she could understand them. Luckily, darts kept them at a stalemate till Therion showed up.
Therion followed through on his promise to Seph, a newly recognized human Athela. The possibility of more hapless, and possibly helpless, human women being out in the universe was terrifying. Someone sneaky like him needed to make sure they weren't being taken advantage of. And what better way to do that then get captured as a slave?

Spoilers ahead.
Oh, I love Bex. She hasn't written anything I haven't liked yet. As much as I loved Seph and Zver I adore Therion and Maude. Therion's complete irreverence is priceless. I laughed so hard. And Culler and Gummy? Holy crap! Even the background characters, that may not get their own stories (although, please, I'll even take 30pg novellas for them) are amazing. Weis, for example. Maude and Seph and Vedma facing off was brilliantly done. And while Kora wasn't as huge as Kimis she was more mature? Ish? And Ran, he's so adorable. This was everything I was hoping for after Thanemonger. We see more of the whole family, we see the Dominion reacting to another human Athela, the attitude of more moya infused tech and get to meet more characters that will hopefully show up in their own books. Not to say there weren't some dark times. Seph still hasn't gotten back to her son, Maude's pregnancy for a sister she may never see again is a reminder of what she lost, there's the mystery of the ash in the power cells that gets brought to light, the lizardy aliens were planning on using Maude to create a hybrid that would allow them to access the coveted tech. It isn't all sunshine and laughter, but it is a perfectly slanty and sarcastic book and the fact that Therion stars in it makes it all the better. I seriously can't wait to see where the next takes us.

A great follow on from the first in this series.
The riot is the brother, and the Bane to Zver's Thane.
A man of many faces, all of them smirking, he takes the challenge to find other human women who may have been abducted from Earth.

Maude is living in an open prison, unknowingly being experimented on when the alien tech that latched on to her allows it. Is it this and the stress of aliens being real that is slowly taking her mind?

Nope. But it's nice to think that.

There ion rescues the human, after inviting all the guards and fellow inmates to a prison riot, after lunch...

I seriously laughed out load as this story went on.

Bane and Maude are well matched and their story acts as a great foil to the horror and slow realisation that unfolds in this second instalment to this world.

It starts slow but then lives up to its promise, although the story is slow to start, once it gets going, it really rocks! The characterizations were complex and well written, I loved the dichotomy between Therion and Maude and how they naturally complement each other. I loved the first book in the series and looked forward to reading this one, they were both interesting in their own ways. I'm looking forward to the next one, where maybe the energy shells will reveal some good news for Seph and Maude. Therrian was beautifully irreverent and completely fun to read and Maude was just a nice person, regardless of her predicament. I loved them, you probably will too!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. I laughed the entire book. To get a good understanding of the developing backstory, they definitely should be read in order (this being book 2). I can't wait to see book 3.

2.5 stars rounded up.

The heroine in this book was beyond irritating. She was timid, doesn’t see the evil in the world & kind of falls into the TSTL category.
BUT the hero completely made up for it. He was beyond funny.

Recommended as filler.

This. Book.

NGL, I had my doubts in the first 20% of this story. Even though I DLed it from KU immediately upon release, I was afraid to read it. Because I loved the first one and Therion so much, I was terrified I was going to be disappointed and avoided this read for a stupidly long time. And at first? It looked like I might be.

But.

This book is full of unexpected reveals, twists, turns, and wonderfully layered characters, just like the first one. With heavy doses of rough humor. My Space Fam did not disappoint and kept the laughs coming with their antics.

I just.

I had to take a couple of extra days with this one, because I had to give myself space to think about what all was implied by each information drop as the characters received it. And in this book? The Teras males of House Borac and the human Athelas housed with them learn disturbing things about the mysterious long-dead alien race that left their technology behind. And most of it? Woo. It's a lot to think about. I was silly and thought the story centering around Therion, the intentional fool of the Borac clan, would be light hearted and full of whimsy and lots of laughs. It was one of those things, but this book packed a lot of heavy, chilling, and hard to bear information about the human's situation into it. And the direction forward is more clear but tough to swallow.

All of the rough and tumble males of House Borac are a delight to read about. Whether it's super sweet teenager Ran, Dyr—Vedma's partner in crime—the aged patriarch of the clan, Dius, Weis, or Therion, they were all entertaining and loveably flawed. As I learned more about the, frankly, baffling world the Teras live in, seeing the roles Therion and Dius in particular took on was eye-opening. These boys all love their House and are loyal through and through. Appearances never tell the whole story with this lot. They're all nuanced and full of surprises.

And how these men love and honor their women? Swoon. My husband is also the type to hold my shoes while I run amok and take out anyone who tries to mess with me after.

“You’re like me, Therion.” His grandfather shrugged. “Tall men lift up the ones we love.”

Just look at that healthy masculinity on display. Love it.

The reason I thought I was going to hate this book was my make-or-break sticking point in romance: the heroine, Maude. At first Maude appears to be something different than what we she really is. Like all other characters McLynn crafted for this series, her full character is revealed slowly, and it took a while for me to warm up to her and not keep blessing her poor heart. And it happened a lot in that first 20% of the book. Not all heroines can be the most everything—and it's so boring when they are—but McLynn took a trope character from this genre and made her interesting and fresh, a talent I haven't seen many authors writing these stories have a firm grasp of. It's genuinely hard to craft characters who have depth and can possess both softness and a firm core to them.

So in the end, I got exactly what I feared I would be robbed of: an excellent book about Therion, the Bane of Borac, Banger of Thanes.

It looks like Culler is up next, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on with him as the layers peel back. I'm really hoping he's secretly the biggest, softest teddy bear.

To enjoy this book and the series to its fullest you need to have read Thanemonger, it's filled with back story that you NEED to know! And it's a bloody blindingly great read.
I also recommend that if you haven't you also read prequel novella for the same reasons.

Bane picks up where Thanemonger ends and dives straight into the action...and the wonderful 'Fucking Therion' aka Bane is still as ever the wonderful enigma that we met in book 1.
I adored this book for many reasons...

the first and for most was we got to look into Therion's mind...we learnt more about how and why he is, who he is and the reasons behind why he does the things he does... sorry for the vagueness but #NoSpoilersHere...

Secondly the humour that fills the book..the banter between Bane and his family members was brilliantly crafted... I'm mean come on... 'Gods those two shits were squeezed from the same arsehole'....( and it's context ) is probably the best line in a book EVER!!! Bane's narrative was both funny, peppered with vulgarity and emotionally priceless...he is defiantly my kinda guy! 🙌🏻💯♥️
The connection between Bane and his heroine, Maude..was beautiful and sweet and hot and spicy. Just bloody fantastic!

Thirdly...and by no means lastly.. the uniqueness of the story arc that is contained in this series is one that is well thought out, original and continues to develop and grow and equally blow my mind with each book that this author releases.

There is a lot revealed in this book , consider my socks blown off! Because I was not expecting the 'big reveal' equal parts stunned and shocked and mind blown...this was an unputdownable read and i am so so so so looking forward to the next instalment!
Bravo author...You Rawk 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻

This brings a whole new level of great reading to the sci-fi romance realm. I was blown away, BM has created a futuristic other worldly universe that’s ...well completely alien. I’ll admit it boggles the mind in some places as you’re trying to picture what exactly is being described but it’s exactly what an alien world should be, alien. Loved it the romance was sweet and hot and a lot of fun to follow. I’m hooked.

Brilliant!! Bex McLynn has crafted a world with the intrigue of the days of knights & ladies and mashed it up with a futuristic alien romance! Bane is a multi-faceted masterpiece. Therion is of House Borac. He’s a younger brother to the Thane. He’s Irreverent and a ne’er-do-well of many talents. Then enters Maude who awakens on a desert planet with a “spider” of alien tech attached to her. (You’ll come to love Kora, the spider.) Coveted human and a technopath, of which she is unaware, Maude is being held prisoner as her captor prepares to auction her. Therion, caught and sold as a slave, arrives to rescue Maude. It’s a favor to Seph from book 1. Therion is hilarious always talking about scheduling a riot with the guards and captives. The Bane doesn’t expect to grow attached to sweet Maude, but as the story unfolds that’s what happens. As a human, Maude is an opposite to our other human, Seph, who has an actively aggressive persona. Bane has many layers. Some of my favorite parts were the tactical maneuvers of escape and destruction. This book is so much more than a love story! It’s witty, intelligent, super steamy, and all about family. Well worth the wait! 5 stars

Therion is the Bane of Borac - you get little glimpses in Thanemonger that all is not as it seems with him. He's good at putting on a facade.....the fool, the drunk, the man who visits sex droids........all isn't as it seems. By the end of book one I needed his story, badly!!
This one shows us the real Therion, yes he cusses like a little potty mouthed fiend, yes he's not always the most honest person but all this is for a reason.......you'll have to wait and see, just like Maude did. She's almost too good to be true at first but then you see she's one of those rare people.......truly nice and caring, way underestimated by people all the time.
This one builds more of this amazing world, I've decided I don't have a clue what's going to happen next.....one reason I'm really enjoying these.
They're different, fresh and the characters have made me feel like I know them. Ran is one day going to get a story.......once he grows up anyway!

Therion’s story is amazing!
The façade Therion wears leads people to disregard him, thinking he’s a fool, spouting crazy ideas. It’s amazing what can be accomplished under that guise.
Therion is the Bane of Borac - what did he have to offer her? He doesn’t give himself credit, even though he finds Maude irresistible. Therion is such an extraordinary personality! How could anyone resist him? Not me! And certainly not Maude. Surely, a match meant to be.
The humor keeps me laughing throughout! There is one scene in which his cousin, Dius, lets Therion know he really doesn’t give a *hoot* about an outcome. The response Dius gets is classic Therion! Never fear, you’ll recognize when you see it! Every page held me in its thrall. I had ‘book-hangover’ when I finished. Other books in my TBR list paled in comparison. What’s next, Ms. McLynn?

I hate/love this book!

Do you remember the first time you had a sour sweet. You screwed up your face and then took another.... well this book started this way for me

The story is told with references and language that is not always clear and I confess that I almost put this down but this had nothing but good reviews. Deep breath, stick with the books and read another couple of chapters. As you read the details become clearer and story more addictive

Great characters, a great story and so glad I did not put this book down. I missed the first book and now off to read that to see what I missed. I will follow this author and eager to see what follows

I started this book right after I finished reading the first book, "Thanemonger". Going from a very strong, crafty heroine to one who is much more timid and trusting was definitely a switch. Normally, the type of character that Maude is is one that would turn me off of a book, but I so loved the first book and absolutely adored Therion that I opted to muddle through.

Glad I did because Maude is a bit more than she appears and has a backbone. Also, the twists in this story with regards to "Gummy", what Therion has been up to and how the humans have been arriving in this section of the universe were PHENOMENAL.

I can't wait for the next book in the series!

*WARNING* contains explicit sexual content
I was a little confused in the beginning with all of the odd names, but once I got that sorted it was all good. I also think the female lead is to naive. I have to say, I 💖 the Bane character. Bane is funny, strong, protective, but underneath all of the bravado is feelings of being unworthy and insecure. Gummy was a surprise and my favorite character of the book. I think this quite different from Thanemonger (book 1) because this one has a lot more "funny" to it. Well written. Great characters. Never a dull moment.

Therion's story!!!! Maude and Therion were quite the pair. She saw him for who he really was and he loved her for her differences. New tech is discovered. We see more of the Borac family and it is awesome!!! Characters that were fun - Gummy and Culler.

We find out more about how Maude and Seph got to the market where they were found. It's shocking and a fabulous twist!

I didn't think it was possible to top Thanemonger but I like this book even more because of Therion, Zver's screwup, wastrel younger brother who spent his life running his mouth off, pissing people off and playing the fool. The thing is, he does this to distract everyone from his real plans and to make them all discount him. In reality, he's 100% committed to his house and his family. Everything he does is to help them and he's willing to seriously jeopordize his own health and appear as the dregs of society in order to achieve those aims. When he's sent by Seph to investigate the rumors of another human woman being held captive by a warlord, everyone better watch out because Therion is not messing around. He will rescue this woman, even if she's doesn't actually think needs rescuing.

Maude initially comes off as weak and impossibly naive, but Therion is entranced by her impossibly good nature and sunny outlook. The more he gets to know her, the harder he falls for her, even though he knows that what she really needs is a strong Thane to stand by her and protect her, not a screw-up like him. Aargh, Therion was just so sweet and lovable, just like Maude. They make such a great couple. As for the underlying story, lots more is revealed about the nature of the ancient, alien tech that both of the human women can command and I'm so looking forward to the next book.

The start was a bit puzzling and what looked like captured slaves trying to escape turned out to be something completely different. This story is about aliens from planet Teras saving humans who appear to possess a specific talent that marks them as distinguished and desirable. Everyone is playing a role, well every Teras, because Maude, the human has no idea what is going on. The Teras in charge of her rescue is Therion and he quickly falls in love with Maude. However Maude has her heart set on going back to earth because she desperately needs to be reunited with her sister. Things get overtly complicated specially since Maude is suddenly very much aware of her need to be near Therion. I absolutely loved this story. I love that Bec writes amazingly rich stories that make you feel as if you are part of the story.

I didn’t enjoy this one as much, but I kept reading because Therion was clearly the star of the show, and I was rooting for him the entire time to get his own happy ending.

As for the female lead, Maude—ehhh. I now see why other readers say she falls into the TSTL (too stupid to live) trope. I don’t like these types of characters, and she comes across that way strongly in the beginning. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s the main reason some readers stopped, since she takes a lot of patience to tolerate. Compared to her, I found myself appreciating Seph, the female lead in the first book, much more.

That said, this book did a better job than the first at explaining things, so I wasn’t nearly as confused. Then again, it probably helped that I had already read the first book, Thanemonger, since that one did most of the heavy lifting in throwing me into this universe.

I started this book a while back then got distracted and left it until later. Now that I have had the chance to finish it I can say Therion was a funny endearing kind of guy who pretends to be a loser but had honor and loyalty. I liked that Seph and Zver played a role in this book and the family ties confused me. Maude was carrying her sister child after waking up and realizes she has to get back to her but was trapped by her captors who also wanted her and the baby. I would like to know who kidnapped them and if Maude’s sister who went on with life talked to Seph about her unborn babe as she did end up adopting. I feel like I missed something but look forward to the next in the series.

I read book 1 and was impressed I just finished Book 2 and I am hooked .

I love 'Alien 👽' books, Romance, Scifi...but most are light ,uncomplicated characters you would forget very quickly, Not these guys!!! When the sexy hunka refers to pressure washing his ass cheeks and in the next page has you blushing,...not many writers can pull it off, Not since G.A Aiken 's Gwenvael
Have I fell head over heels ,downloading book 3 now.
