Life can sometimes seem like a complicated constellation of detours and winding roads – some of which teeter on the side of ease and predictability, while others… well, not so much. Follow along with a father who was dealt a difficult hand as he recounts the tragic story of his family, ravished by one of the greatest mistakes in modern medicine.
With raw grit and vulnerability, Scott recounts his life growing up in small town USA and details the ways in which addiction and mental illness resulted in losses that no father, son, or brother should even have to endure.
Alongside his youngest son, Wes, a medical professional in psychiatry, they take a closer look into the world of addiction and the epidemic we find ourselves to be in – revealing the causes, variables, and paths to consider moving forward. Scott shares the lessons he learned throughout the journey of trying to find his firstborn son, Daniel, help in battling a disease that few understand.
Through Daniel’s story, the cracks in our system – the injustice, corruption, and discrimination – are directly illuminated and should inspire each of us to work better together.
I happily give this book 5 stars, but here are also my thoughts. First, everyone living in America should read this book. It is a great encapsulation of the sociological standing of our society with addiction. Second, I, myself, felt a nerve was struck by some statements made regarding the medical community. Is this because I’m apart of the medical community? Possibly. Is this because some of my core believes have been challenged? Also possibly the case. Regardless, this story is the most vulnerable retelling of a human life done by a father and brother that will undoubtedly change your thinking on addiction and make you take a closer look at the current practices being followed and the people in your life.
I really enjoyed this book and found it very educational, especially when it comes to the opioid epidemic and addiction. Chapter 10 was my favorite, particularly the way it talks about the medical field and what it has become. Overall, this was an eye-opening read and helped me understand addiction on a deeper level
If you want to learn about the cause of opiate addiction, please read this book. If you doubt that it is a disease or don’t understand why people would lose everything to a drug, read this book. Thank you to the author for providing such an excellent explanation of the disease that took my son’s life. It helps me to understand how the brain changes. I beg everyone to read this book. This disease has killed half a million in the last decade in the US. We need to understand it in order to prevent it and treat it.
