In a perfect world, there'd be no need for Animal Magic, but Eva and Karl who live at the animal rescue centre with their parents, know that life isn't perfect. Every day there's a new arrival in need of their help... Merlin the Homeless Foal, Bella the Runaway Rabbit, Dilly the Lost Duckling, Charlie the Home alone Kitten, Rusty the Injured Fix Cub, Honey The Unwanted Puppy.
I read this out loud with my 11 year old daughter, and neither of us particularly liked it. It was probably a little young for her even though she tends to enjoy most any animal stories. We were both annoyed that the author referred to the parents by their first names throughout most of the book instead of as 'mom' or 'dad' or even as pronouns because this was our first Animal Rescue book, and we had trouble keeping track of who was who. There was really no distinction between how the parents and the kids were referenced in the book, which made it really confusing. Also, it seemed a lot to ask of a young girl (can't remember how old she was) to expect her to care for and bottle-feed the injured fox as part of the family business, but also understand that she's not supposed to pet it or overly handle it so that it doesn't get too familiar with humans so that it can return to the wild (even though they don't tell her this at the start) or get too attached to it.
Written by Jenny Oldfield under a different name. Very similar to Animal Ark, but for younger children, as the story is shorter and the writing simpler. Main character is quite solidly drawn, but the other characters seem a little perifiral. Yr1/2.
