Myri is a candidate for the Dragon Academy from the mines and has to deal with a lot of racial discrimination, including from a “gorgeous” boy one year older (tho he thinks she is 13 and is salty about that) named Pravik.
But it’s okay because they end up with twin blue dragl s who apparently only choose relatives so obvi the two end up together.
Time passes by, and it’s explained well. What isn’t is the Blight. Some of the worldbuilding is weak. Oh then as their friendship grows because they *have* to sleep in the same room (chaperoned) and Myri has nightmares, they meet an older young woman later described as “was graduated” which was weird ohrasing. And at first Pravik is upset because he doesn’t want to see her bloated and cranky during her monthlies. What? Anyway, this woman tells Myri she was hearing a goddess in her dreams and the Blight is coming!
I wish we got more about Myri’s family.
The twin dragons are great. What I don’t get is that in ch 14 Pravik said Myri left Aftyx behind but then on the next page said the two were together. I also don’t gwt why Myri is so susceptible to anything the other eoman says despite barely knowing each other and being a bit duped by her.
Super fast story and I was tempted to mark as DNF, but overall 2.5 rounded up to 3.
Myri’s destiny will be more than she could ever hope for. Myri is so excited to be accepted into the dragon rider academy. But on the first day she meets a nasty boy named Pravik who insults her heritage, demeans her, and continually tries to best her in class. But on hatching day they have the misfortune to each get a blue dragon, meaning blue dragons are always twins and usually bond with siblings or close relatives because they can’t be separated. Now Myri and Pravil have to live in a room together with the two twin dragon babies and raise them together. For the next several years they stop fighting and start to learn to work together. But Myri starts having nightmares, waking up scared and afraid that everyone she loves is gone. An all-powerful being is trying to communicate with her because she will have the ability to stop the Blight and save the world. But it won’t happen anytime soon and not without a lot of losses, pain, and heartache. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
This story really sets up the Brindle Dragon series. There are dragons - and love of dragons by humans. There is magic, and not just with the dragons. Then there is power from the gods and the Spirits. Old spirits are revealed. There are necessary to fight back the Bight. There there is love for humanity, only because there is love of two unexpected heroes. The love of the future to be is what eventually drives them.
Pacing of the book is interesting, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Some detail is skipped and other detail is alluded to for the reader to build. The author draws a canvas for the reader and lets you fill in the details. Certainly this was a good read.
“Dragon Rider”, prequel to the 'Brindle Dragon' series, is a slow burn that doesn't really come to life until the final chapters. And it is not until the very end that is makes sense as a prequel. Meri and Pravik are rivals at the Dragon Academy, constantly competing and always annoying each other. Until they are chosen by twin Blue dragons - who only ever accept twin humans or siblings - and are forced to live together. They're bonded by their dragons but have to learn to adapt to each others foibles. As it is largely a YA novel there is a lot of love/not love involved. It needs a much tighter editing as there are a number of odd errors. 3 Stars.
Myri is a poor girl from a small town. She has always dreamed of becoming a dragon rider. Pravik has money. He doesn't believe Myri should be in the program. When they bond with dragon brothers, their realities are turned upside down.
This book is well written and well edited. The basic storyline is not new, but the author introduces new twists with ease. This is a prequel. It can be read as a stand alone book, but the ending just may entice you to purchase the series.
Eist ended the Blight but couldn't have done it without her parents' sacrifice. This last story of the Brindle Dragon story is a flashback to how it began...the story of Eist's parents. What a unique way to end a series...and an excellent way to tie up all the loose ends. I appreciated this story and the feeling that the series is completed!
If you like a fast paced read without too much detail but full of action then I can definitely recommend this book wholeheartedly and I will most assuredly be reading the rest of the series. Very good indeed!!
While it’s more likely to happen with fictional worlds I grow attached to than something that’s happened in reality, I found myself tearing up at the right moments, just waiting for the penny to drop on the loss and heartbreak that hasn’t even happened to Myri or Eist yet.
This is the last book written but it tells how it started. This author writes a series much like the Dragon riders of Pern. That is also a great read. If you like dragons, adventure, magic and a fast paced storyline this is for you. The whole series is available.
The 10th book does a great job of making sense of the very deep story. Again to understand you must read, and enjoy, how skilfully the author keeps the narrative together. A really fine story!
The characters and story was imaginative. I couldn't stop reading it. My only question is: What happened to Myri's sister? Hopefully she will be in the next book .
Action, intrigue and danger face Eiste's parents and set the stage for her own adventures in the Brindle Dragon series. Excellent work of magic and dragons.
I really enjoyed this novel. It was a prequel, but as I had not read any others of this author's books, I liked it on its own merits. The ending was puzzling because I haven't read any of the others. However, good characters and a good plot. I was half expecting it to be like Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels, with the dragons saving the planet, but it was quite different.
