Agents of Change #3

What the Scot Hears

Rate this book
England 1814

Quiet and Demure…

Two words not associated with Mrs. Amelia Chase, a woman from America on the run from her past with a healthy love for Shakespearean insults.

1. Opinionated – Yes
2. Nosy – Most definitely
3. Daring and Outrageous – Perhaps

In sum, all things irresistible to a broody, sexy Scotsman with a delicious brogue. A man with the power to evoke sparks with a look, sizzle with a touch, and fire with a moan.

And he’s looked… And touched… And most definitely moaned.

Talkative and Impulsive…

Two words not associated with Lord Alaistair MacLeod, an Agent for the Crown and a man with many secrets. Secrets best kept from a nosy American woman who tweaks all his instincts… the ones that scream: Trouble. The one that screams: Mine.

She’s suspicious. She’s audacious. She’s tenacious and brave.

Och, she’s simply irresistible.

All things he thought he disdained. All things he might not live without…

About the author

Amy Quinton

Amy Quinton writes humorous historicals with heat, often from her back porch in Summerville, South Carolina but sometimes with her BFF at the kitchen table. And only when her dog and three cats allow. (She’s guilty of spoiling them horribly.)

She’s susceptible to shiny things, soft things, leather, trips to the thrift store, Whisky, tattoos, witchy things, Bunco with her Bitches, and men in kilts (particularly her husband)-but not necessarily in that order.

She adores her children (most of the time), finds a lot of humor being married to a Brit (usually), cusses (probably more than she should), and loves to read and write romance (always).

When she finds the time, she loves to crochet, knit, and make jewelry. And longs to travel to the UK every chance she gets.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an ARC provided to me by the author*

4.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book, it had the perfect blend of humor, intrigue, secrets, sexual tension and action.

Amelia was a really great character, she has not had an easy life and has done what she had to do to survive. She leaves America and goes to England to find the Marquess of Dansbury, because she wants to inform him that she is his long lost sister and well, she really doesn't have any other choice, she had to leave. She is a complex character, she is amusing, talkative, smart, wily and kind hearted. If I had to sum her up in one word I would say she is intrepid.

Alistair MacLeod is a spy for the crown, he has known much heartache and betrayal in his life and therefore doesn't trust easy or often. When he first sees Amelia, he is captivated and immediately on guard - he knows one thing for sure - this woman is trouble. MacLeod is an interesting character, he is a man of few words, gruff, stoic and seemingly unemotional - but as they say, still waters run deep and Alistair MacLeod definitely runs deep. He does not want to want Amelia, he does not want to find her amusing, he does not want to get to know her better and he definitely does not want to love her!

On the surface, these two seem like oil and water, but in reality they are more alike than they are not. Their banter is laugh out loud funny and their interactions are filled with longing and sexual tension - the reader knows that these two are "meant to be" but neither of them can seem to let go of their secrets or their mistrust long enough to make the connection.

This book has a lot going on, but somehow it all works without overwhelming the love story between Amelia and Alistair.

I will be honest, before she contacted me and asked if I would review her book, I had never heard of Amy Quinton - but I will tell you this - Now that I have read one of her books, I won't forget her! This book is not perfect, there are some typos, some incorrect use of honorific titles and some modern phrasing - but what is right about the book far outweighs what is wrong. This is definitely an author to watch out for - she knows how to tell a story! This book was paced well, had a lot of intrigue, steamy love scenes, laugh out loud moments, great secondary characters and a really wonderful ending. I would highly recommend this book and look forward not only to the next book, but going back and reading the previous books.

Oooooh I'm so in love.
This series is a certainty. I've been waiting A LOT for a new novel...to the point I had started despairing. And here we are, What the Scor Hears is great, I loved it. And I want to read the next one, now. And I also would love to read Alain's story (which let's be honest, we all want). And please don't make me wait too long Amy. Please.

So good.

ps. Thanks for using the term "knackered".

Oh my, I loved this story, but then it is Amy Quinton! Great storyline and characters. I love a rugged, moody Scotsman. The sexy scenes were hot and steamy. Perfect story. Next up #4.

Laird Alistair McLeod is a morose Scot with reasons to be laconic, withdrawn, and distrustful. His reasons will break your heart. Amelia Chase is an outgoing, socially adept grifter who never met a person she couldn't charm. He knows she isn't what she seems and doesn't believe much she says. She knows he isn't as heartless as he likes to appear.

Sparks fly from the moment they meet and they don't stop. These two challenge, out maneuver, and chase with one another from one end of England to the other and into a crumbling castle in Scotland as well. Along the way they flirt, dance around unbidden attraction, and face up to desire. The banter and teasing never lets up. Neither does the magnetism pulling them together.

If you read the authors amusing blurb you've heard the tone of this book. Fast paced throughout, readers don't have much time to think about the rather undeveloped and occasionally illogical suspense plot, or worry about the fine points of historical authenticity. It doesn't matter. This book is about McLeod and Mel

This is the third of a series and I would not advise reading it out of order. While I liked the story I still felt that I was missing info in regards to the previous books and their characters. I found the banter and sexual tension that zinged between Alaistair and Amelia highly entertaining. It is a perfect case of opposites attract but when they finally got together it was a bit anticlimactic. If you are a stickler for period detail and the ballrooms of the times you will not find it here since the tone of the story is more modern and the setting takes place mostly in the countryside. The bit about the society fell flat for me since I did not read the previous books so I failed to grasp the menace they proposed.

This book was fun and less stuffy and books that usually take place in this time period. I loved Amelia Chase. She definitely was no simpering woman and could definitely hold her own with grumpy Highlanders. One Highlander, in particular was very grumpy and annoying, but I liked him also. The one thing that I did not like about this book just because I had a difficult time following it was everybody practically called each other by their last name except for Amelia. MacLeod sometimes called Amelia by her last name but then he started calling her by nicknames. I did find it annoying because Amelia never called him by his first name. She always called him by his last name. You would think if they ended up getting married later on that they would want to even call each other by their first names. I did like this book and will read the next book in the series.

I did somewhat enjoy most of the banter between and the intelligence of these two, the story is heavily focused on suspense and the very dark side of regency which I wasn't prepared for since I haven't read any of the others.

DNF. I could not get into this as much as I tried. And if Amelia said she was an independent American woman one more time I was going to hurt somebody.

I liked it, there were some questions that weren't answered for me (like wtf did her luggage go? What happened to her horse? and What about his brother?) but they didn't really detract from the story itself.
I will post more of a review when I have one.

Amy Quinton has produced another fun romp in her Agents of Change series. MacLeod, the Scot of the title is superb: gloomy, pessimistic, suspicious, and totally befuddled by the brash American woman who keeps stumbling across his work as a spy for the British Crown.
For all her cheerful outgoing personality, Amelia hides secrets of her own, not least her identity and her background.
Read this book to discover how this mismatched pair discover they are perfect for one another, while negotiating people determined to kill them and MacLeod's reaction to Amelia's lies. Better still, read the series. The other couples already matched are in this novel, and it was fun to see them again. I very much enjoyed What the Duke Wants, and am now itching to read What the Marquis Sees, which I've skipped. See? The books can be read independently and out of order, but I want to see how Beatrice won her man. I've a suspicion she may be my favourite of the three heroines so far.
This would be a five-star book for me if I'd had more of a sense we were in 1814. The voice is very modern, and there's little period detail. But still a rollicking good yarn, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
