Alex thought he knew what he needed--a summer on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona to focus on finishing his next novel. Just like every summer--write, drink wine, take his dog for walks. He never anticipated Josh, Cody, and a long forgotten mystery upending it all.
Josh moved to Arizona to help his ailing uncle George run his business during the busy tourist season. Far from the city and the world he knows, he find himself attracted to Alex but unable to fully commit. What is his true intention?
Cody is young and looking to make something of himself in the world. He may be from a small town, but he knows more about the world than most men his age. What secrets does he carry with him?
Love can start with a spark, but the fire that starts reveals secrets and mysteries that will consume them all.
18+ because of content. Deals with the death of a non-MC.
I picked this up because on a fb thread the author said this was going to be a trilogy that ends in a throuple relationship. #signmeup
So, there’s the beginnings, or spark, of a relationship between Alex, Cody and Josh in this. The complications being Josh So this book is really about Alex and Cody getting together and Josh seeing it from the sidelines...mostly. If you aren’t a fan of kissing, touching, flirting, dreaming and fantasising about and with others than this is not for you. Not that there’s a lot...but there kind of is. ;)
I really liked the setup and having it progress over a trilogy hopefully allows for some great character growth and relationship development. There was a lot happening outside the relationship(s) with a mystery and some secondary characters who got a lot of page time so I do hope we get less distractions/filler in the next one.
But this book definitely needs more editing. We’re talking multiple spelling errors, missing words, altogether wrong words-way more than I could keep count of. Not to mention the authors complete dismissal of using contractions. Some of these sentences seems so out of place and much too formal in casual conversations. It was frustrating to read and distracted from the characters.
So, while I am interested in where this series of going it’s safe to say I’m stuck fairly in the middle of the road. Not hating it but interested enough to want to see how it turns out, especially since book 2 centres around Josh and a firefighter. So how the heck is that going to turn out that we eventually get to the throuple? On to bk 2 to find out.
I loved this book and it isn't usual for me to like a first book I read from an author but it happened with Spark. The main characters Alex and Cody were very easy to like, Josh not so much, by the way I'm afraid to read the next book about him. I prefer books with happy ending instead of a HFN, however I really liked this book
An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review
Attraction is a strange beast, as Alex, from Spark by J. P. Scott, knows all too well. Three men, a tragic past, and the limitations of age weave together creating a mysterious and intriguing tale that will leave you with a profound sense of happiness, along with hints of sadness.
Widely successful writer Alex returns to Lakeside Estates nestled in the Mogollon Rim of Arizona. At his summer get-a-way he can clear his mind and focus on his next best seller. Upon his arrival he expects to see George Dawson but instead encounters George’s nephew, Josh. The instant attraction and desire that flood his system are far from what he expects.
For a good portion of this story, Josh comes across as an arrogant prick who appears to be using Alex. Initially, it seems that Alex is A-Okay with that, so the plot line makes sense and comes across as hot and steamy. Later on, it’s as if Alex’s feelings are torn, and Josh becomes the person you kind of dislike. However, things come full circle, leaving you with a positive impression of the man.
The plot twists in this debut novel from J.P. Scott will have you guessing, and nope, you won’t always be correct in your assumptions – which makes for a great mystery.
When alluring young Cody enters the picture, you get the feeling that a ménage is about to happen. Whether it does or doesn’t is insignificant. Despite their age gap, the connection between Cody and Alex is genuine and mutually beneficial. As they grow, you can’t help but compare Alex with Josh to Alex with Cody.
Breaking from his writing, Alex assists with running Lakeside Estates. Stumbling upon numerous old keepsakes that he gives to George; he receives an odd reaction. This only piques his curiosity, and as he unravels the truth your heart breaks because of the senselessness behind the what and why. The distant past isn’t the only secret revealed, Cody has a more recent one threatening to destroy his budding relationship with Alex.
Whew.… There is a lot going on with Spark and yet it wasn’t until I sat down to write this review that that fact hit me. The plot twists in this debut novel from J.P. Scott will have you guessing, and nope, you won’t always be correct in your assumptions – which makes for a great mystery. Will you be surprised, maybe? But everything fits into place as a rejuvenated life unfolds brightly for Alex, Cody, and Josh.
JP Scott is a new to me author and I would definitely read this author again....(actually I'm looking forward to the second book in this series to see how Josh's story pans out). I loved the mystery surrounding Gray and I actually loved that Alex delved into it despite the snark received toward the end by some of the characters (I'm not sure it really was deserved in any case). Did it all fall into place for me? The romance between Alex and Cody? The attraction with Josh? It might have felt forced a bit and that insta-love that seems so stereotypical in MM romance is definitely there. But I could also see how Cody would feel safe with someone like Alex. I had other issues with the story because of part of the story-line that I don't want to divulge here but that was never addressed between Alex and Cody and it would see it would have been important considering where this story led. 3.5 stars for me...not quite a 4 though.
“It sparked with electricity and jolted through our souls.”
I found this book to be enjoyable enough. Alex and Cody were likable most of the time. Both did things I wouldn’t approve of if I was seeing someone even if it was just in the beginning, and Cody did something that really upset me towards the end. I’m glad Alex was able to care for Cody despite his past, which I found a little endearing.
I’m still not sure how I feel about Josh, and I wasn’t sure where the story was going with him and Alex at times, but I am glad it turned out the way it did between the two.
There’s a slight mystery taking place as far as Alex figuring out Gray’s story, and that along with George might have been my favorite parts of the story.
I do think the story needs to go through a few more eyes as there were quite a few mistakes and hopefully they will be fixed before the story goes live. Mostly added words that weren’t meant to be in the sentence, or the wrong word being used (example: heard instead of heart).
Another new read from a new author. It’s always great exploring new authors and their characters.
I love Small Town Romances. It’s the atmosphere it adds to the story, I suppose.
Now, I initially thought this would be a romance but it veered towards erotica. I say that because it centered on a lot of sex and not much character development or a consistent plot. Unfortunately, Erotica is not my preferred genre of reading, so that really took me away from the book.
I was also not really feeling Cody or Josh for Alex. Probably because it did not come off as a romance story to me. The beginning quickly became almost like a porno scene and it stayed that way. I found the humor in that but did not necessarily understand the necessity of why that scene or the scenes that followed played out like they did. It didn’t authentically build into anything. It was more about sex than it was about the substance. I usually like a balance with my romance stories.
I also did not like Josh (who will be getting his own book, so there might be hope for redemption on his part). I did not like how predatory and skeevy he and Ethan were during a particularly awkward dinner. Nor did I buy into his sob story.
The revelations surrounding Cody’s past weren’t so surprising, but Alex’s quick switch to sex without protection with someone who admitted such a past (a most recent past) was not the most logical of choices. It really came out of nowhere. Nor did it make sense to me.
Equally, the proclamations of love also came out of nowhere. Probably because of this weird lust triangle situation and a rather inconsistent attempt at a mystery side plot with a secondary character.
Unfortunately, the story lost me because I struggled to understand the characters and their choices. If I cannot understand the characters , it is not likely I will truly understand their story.
This book has a huge mystery within the story. You are not sure who is leaving behind their secrets and who is using them. Love the twist and turn in this story thought I understand why Alex and Cody attitude was the way it was and then that it turns upside down. Cody, Josh & Alex relationship is a mystery and alluring all. recommend this book if you love twist with your characters BRVL --Book Review Virginia Lee
Spark is an mmm romantic book between Josh, Cody, and Alex. Jody and Alex are attracted between them from the moment they meet. Cody and Alex start a relationship but it’s mysterious to me and afterward, I didn’t know how to place Josh in their relationship. Josh ran hot to cold when he was dealing with Alex and can see how Alex was confused every time he was him. Overall it’s a great book and I’m hoping Josh gets his own book.
Entertaining. Delightful. Fun. Sexy. Delicious. Great writing. Real believable characters in interesting situations. Buy the book you won't be disappointed
Love the love story! The author keeps you guessing throughout the book with relatable characters. I would definitely recommend this author and his works!
this is between a 3 and 4 for me.. it was good.. part of it kinda annoyed me because i felt like i was missing a small part of the story but.. overall i am glad i read it and i enjoyed it and would read this author more.
