We are becoming more and more obsessed with being thin ... as we get fatter and fatter! The craziest part is that most weight loss 'solutions' are actually part of the problem. Diet and exercise programs fail 97% of people in the long-term, resulting in short term weight loss, medium term regain, and long-term gain approximately 10 to 15% above starting weight.Scientists have known this reality for decades - the entire diet industry is based on it - yet we keep on falling for promises of fast, easy, permanent weight loss (and other fictional tales), putting ourselves through rebranded versions of the exact same thing ... and expecting different results. Some might call this insanity - weight management psychologist Glenn Mackintosh calls it Thinsanity.Glenn's book, Thinsanity, aims to transform the way we approach weight management of the body, by starting with the mind. New scientific developments are offering insights into a compassionate way to make peace with food, fall in love with physical movement, and learn to LOVE your body healthy. Glenn takes all those new scientific developments and expresses them the way he does with his clearly and with lots of understanding. This book is right for anyone who wants to learn to love their body and be healthy in it.
Extremely well researched and engaging - no hype, just practical common sense that really challenges some deeply ingrained (and incredibly damaging) health myths that have held sway for far too long!
This book is a phenomenal insight into the diet industry. I, myself, have struggled with societies norms of ‘thinness’ which have resulted in my own struggles with body image and weight which have lead to crazy diets and exercise programs which have controlled my youth.
Thinsanity is a well-researched transformation guide which explains the diet industry from a scientific perspective and has 7 steps to help change your mindset on toxic views you have on the diet industry. Glenn has a very real, no-bullshit approach when it comes to explaining the diet industry and provides scientific evidence to explain what is going on with our mindsets.
This is one of those books which I will constantly come back to as it’s full of insights, tips and advice which can help lead to fulfilling your life.
I have known Glenn for 6 years now and shared mutual friends with him. He’s helped me in, out, under and over issues and has had a big impact on my life. So I had to read his new book. All I can say is - wow!!!
I believe this is a book that every teen girl (and possibly guy) needs to be handed. It uses science, studies, statistics and the considerable experience of Glenn, who was a psych at one of the major private hospitals in Brisbane providing bariatric surgery - to eviscerate the diet industry. He proves - even to those who are doubting right now - that diets DO NOT WORK and lead to a cycle of putting more weight on. This book will stop you ever being sucked into the vortex of any other diet, eating plan, 12 week challenge, detox ever again. The book also leads you through the steps to learn to know yourself better, understand your triggers and find ways to lead your best life. He helps you to find ways to make movement fun - yep he’s big on fun because life sucks without it. Honestly, if you’ve ever tried to lose weight or to exercise weight off - please just open this and try it - you won’t be disappointed. Glenn writes like he’s talking to you face to face (I can vouch for that) and it’s easy to read with easy to work through steps based in psychological principals of CBT. Since knowing Glenn, I’ve learned to be less judgemental of myself and to live more. This book can help everyone to do that too. He gives real hacks for dealing with those situations AND people who trigger you.
Wow! Thank you Glenn for such an insightful, well-written, well-researched, practical read.
This book is a must-have if you're sick of dieting, being ashamed of your body and feeling bad about yourself. Glenn gives easy, practice advice that can be implemented immediately to work towards a more positive relationship with our bodies, food and exercise. I feel like I'm getting free therapy sessions doing years of deeply ingrained toxic habits and idealisations.
To be honest, I am a graduate dietitian aligning with the Health At Every Size philosophy. I picked up this book because I wanted to know how I could translate this philosophy to my clients. Not only have I gained a wealth of knowledge in this aspect, but Glenn has also helped me acknowledge some deeply ingrained biases from the years of unaware exposure to diet culture.
I'm reading the book for a second time now to soak up all the valuable information I can to better my practice and my life.
You have a lot to lose - self and body hate, harmful dieting practices, exercises you hate, a world where you feel not enough. And you will gain a happier, more accepting and fulfilled life.
This book will transform your life. Do not hesitate to pick up this book.
I listened to this on Audible. The author knows what he’s talking about and he is super passionate about this topic. There’s no doubt the book is extremely well researched and this will help a lot of people. I don’t know how big the book is but the audio went on and on. It seemed like some of the chapters could have done with a good edit. The author reads this himself and his voice is so slow, so that perhaps turned me off the book as well. The best part was the last chapter where he critiques the more radical body positive (or bopo) advocates.
A great starting point to stop dieting. It's definitely a good idea to dive deeper into topics like intuitive eating, eft, inner child work with other books, but the book is a great road map and offers a lot of depth in itself. It also doesn't shy away talking about the length of this journey. You can't deprogram years of dieting within a 12 week challenge, it takes time to change beliefs and habits. This book is like a great friend being supportive on your journey and sometimes nudge you in the next direction.
This is such an insightful and well referenced/researched book. It explains why we have such a messed up dieting culture and provides data as to why so many diets fail. Glenn writes with clever references and witty undertones. For anyone who’s looking to get off the insane cycle of dieting, I recommend this book enough.
Enjoy Glenn Macintosh podcasts and was looking forward to his book. It's an informative read and makes you think. This book is alot to take in and believe it is worth reading a few times or rereading certain chapters. A timely book to challenge the thin ideal and weight loss paradigm.
Easy to understand with some good tips and actionable steps. The author is genuine in wanting to help. Even though who are well versed in the area of health and science may still take away some new information.
Glenn successfully blasts the diet industry while offering concrete science based solutions to free ourselves of the harmful effects that diets cause. He also goes after the marketing strategies of the health and beauty industry that help to create this insidious cycle so many of us have struggled with. And all of this and more with humor and compassion. His exercises are both easy and effective. And his passion for people to really love the lives they live comes through in every chapter. Having struggled with weight and body image issues since childhood, this book has helped me align myself with what really matters vs a number on the scale. I can’t recommend this book enough...especially if you too struggle with dieting and body image issues. You’ll learn a ton and have some guidelines to create a new experience with your health and body.
