Buying a house in the suburbs was supposed to be low stress—my own little haven to decorate and landscape exactly how I want. Instead, I find myself locking my garbage can to keep pests out–pests that are six-foot-one, green-eyed, and far too good-looking. My trespassing neighbor is rude and entitled. It isn’t long before war is declared, and I find myself stooping to immature pranks. When trouble lands at my door, my unlikely neighbor starts knocking on my heart. Am I ready to answer?
HAGEN
I will win no matter what it takes.
I moved to this neighborhood for a fresh start. The one thing I’m not looking for is a relationship. So, when I mistakenly assume my neighbor is hitting on me, I lash out at her. I didn’t mean to start the war, but now she taunts me from across the street. Our harmless pranks have become the highlight of my day. I should stay away–but I can’t. I want to spend more time with her. When a stalker begins sending Kylie a series of notes, I’m only too willing to help protect her. Maybe I’m looking for a relationship, after all.
R A T I N G: 3 stars to Neighbours Like That ★ ★ ★
I lead into my review for Neighbours Like That with a morsel of open candour: I'm a bastion for romance that undelicately damns censorship behind bedroom doors with sultry eyes, a smirk, a wink and utterly unafraid of the risqué factor. Had I known that this was a spotlessly clean (completely non-smutty) read I most likely would have aborted this particular pick before I gave it immediate priority. That's not to say that this was a bad read. It's also not to say that its lack of smut was a non-negotiable strike against it but clean romance escapism is just not my genteel style of choice. I've burgeoned into a romance reader that feels inherently incomplete without the spoils of a fictional sexual connection. The platitude that resolves a leopard can’t change its spots? I fully believe that a creature should embrace its stripes: mine are pro-smut and open doors without inhibition. Since Sarah J. Maas corrupted by untested sensibilities with fae fascination and smut-bait, anti-steam quickly became an alien entity to my lexicon. I'm now a woman of the (fictional) world!
The story establishes Kylie Boone as the people-pleasing go between who refuses to rock the boat. Socially inactive with a partiality for household projects, she has the traditionalist mindset of a girl who knows what she wants, and that's a dream man who'll give her a dream family on the heels of a dreamy meet-cute made of nothing short of the stuff of dreams. To march down a wedding isle with her future other is a dream set in stone. But all good-natured decorum flies out of the window in the same breath that Kylie wears in the roguish Boone family genes after the neighbourhood newcomer commits not one but two neighbourly faux pas. There's only one thing for it, she declares war. Hagen moved to the suburbs to begin anew but quickly realises his error in judgement when he gets off on the wrong foot with his too-cheerful neighbour. Instead of righting his wrong, he decides to indulge this little prank war by becoming the human-sized irritant Kylie thinks he is.
While it's not unusual for a hero's flaws to assume the obstacle between him and his heroine, the author does play it a bit differently (which I liked) even though it's Hagen himself who sports a dearth in self-belief. Some his actions can be a tad female-oblivious (I.e. chasing Kylie in the dark - with faux anger - and bemused/amused by her fearful reaction to run) and even though I didn't feel convinced over the need for a split up when he and Kylie aren’t in an actual relationship throughout the entire book bar the epilogue, the issue of his self worth based on a bad experience with his ex-girlfriend did consistently support that conflict. The obstacle isn't really Hagen's lack of wanting to be in a relationship but believing in his lack of potential to be in one. He was harmless though, protective when he needed to be and silly when he wanted to be. A really comical fit for Kylie who destroyed her dream of the idyllic partner and built it anew.
The enemies to lovers feeling is more true of Kylie than Hagen - Hagen was more amused by the diversion and entertained (though admittedly scared) by the retaliatory domestic warfare. I loved how committed Kylie was to retaliating, and some really funny moments come from a situation that spirals into playful obsession. While she's usually accused of holding her tongue in place of sparing people's feelings, her lack of mercy for Hagen presented a different (and more nature-centric) side of her that pulls apart the perfection she seems to strive for. The great thing about relationships that start that way is the a lack of pretence that frees the couple from pleasant trappings; it's not a case picking your fights but having them with full satisfaction (and that was a joy). The Boone's are a boisterous bunch and I love the calamitous gene that seems to run through all of them.
Everything light, breezy, comical and rom-com-esque about this I enjoyed without having to try to. PG-appropriate it may be but Neighbours Like That comes with a light-hearted rom com calling card. With a fun plot, barmy cousins and an active back and forth in the form of a neighbour feud, it was carefree and enjoyable for the most part. I love a lopsided meet-cute gone wrong and I was delighted to see how the author would bring it back, or in this case, to err on the feel good side of payback. The characters did come across as realistic but I can't say the same for some of the plot-ish situations. Despite Involving a stalker side storyline, the author preserves the even-tempered tone, but In the same vein, that particular storyline might have been an unnecessary (and an unneeded) diversion that takes the story astray. In places the writing is vague and fails to vindicate and/or explain some of the more central points, especially in instances where I learn in retrospect what I didn't in an actual scene.
Admittedly, the story was loose and inconsistent in places. The ending was also too rushed for my liking and I did have a preference for the first half of the book to the second. Kylie was clearly the most zealous of the two and I enjoyed her level of quirk. Pre-prank war, It was a very debatable decision to discreetly use the garbage can of a neighbour you're clearly on bad footing with, funny though it was to watch Hagen look both ways before he performs the deed. Our hero on the other hand, does it anyway. But you know what? In romantic fiction where heroes seem to take stock of and know the names of almost every piece of female apparel, kudos to him for actually being stumped over what a jumpsuit is. I respect that. As a man who struggles with a lack of self-esteem from a previous relationship, I understood Hagen’s reasons for withdrawing (even if the ‘separation’ felt like an unneeded disruption). Throughout the read, he gradually becomes engrossed in the idea of a life with Kylie anyway and so it seemed really abrupt to me that after only one date together in entire book, he calls for space.
The romance is more on the side of a slow burn. It’s moderately developed relationship-wise, more light of heart than romance-heavy and it's almost as if the devoted act of pranking moonlights as the first stage of a relationship for our quarrelsome couple (or the no-illusions ice breaker), so I warn readers to expect the expected because this is most definitely an angst-free, surprise-free piece of adult fiction. Fictional romance enthusiast that I am, I did hope for more romantic chemistry and relationship development, but despite following a simplistic form, Neighbours Like That is a charming story with charming characters. Apparently a woman who could pull off a series of low-level (but effective) pranks could be the only one to pull a recent bachelor out of his misery while she soon appreciates the message that all good things don’t always come in courteous packages. They sometimes come in the form of a moody neighbour with trickery on the mind.
Content Warning: Mentions a past controlling relationship. An on-page stalker storyline and an ensuing kidnapping. As a clean read there are no bedroom scenes.

Wow!! I can’t believe I’ve never read Carina Taylor before. NEIGHBORS LIKE THAT is such a fun story! Kylie and Hagen are new neighbors. They get off to a rocky start and what happens next is hysterical. Kylie catches Hagen stuffing his garbage in her garbage can and she is outraged. So starts the prank war and some of the things they do to each other are just insane. Once I started reading NEIGHBORS LIKE THAT it was very hard to stop! And those wonderful characters, how happy I am for having ‘met’ them! They will stick with me for a very long time. I just know the same thing will happen for you…
NEIGHBORS LIKE THAT is such a lovely and sweet story. I’ve never read Carina Taylor before but I truly love the way she writes. Her words flow so easily and she snares the reader from the very first page. I am now on a quest to devour every single one of her books, but first I’m reading the rest of this series! I think I just discovered my new to me favorite author! Carina put my emotions all over the place! One minute I was giggling and gushing like a little school girl and the next I was tearing up from laughing so hard and holding my breath! More than once, I wanted to reach into the pages and give these two neighbors big tight hugs!
Carina Taylor has left me in tears from giggling so much and crying for more. I now know I will devour everything this awesome author writes and do it all easily with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. I really loved NEIGHBORS LIKE THAT Wow wow wow!! From the very first page I was emotionally invested in Kylie and I just wanted her to be happy and to smile again. I felt like I was right there with her and I was holding my breath at the end of NEIGHBORS LIKE THAT praying nothing bad was going to happen. Please, you have to give Carina Taylor a try! You won’t be sorry. I can’t wait to read more by one of my new very favorite authors. I have made it a quest to catch up on the rest of her books because her writing is just that good. She makes her readers feel every emotion her characters are feeling to the point where you feel as if you are right there, giggling along with them.
It was nice but felt similar to Mr. Perfect but make this a romcom instead of a romantic suspense. The jokes weren't that funny for me personally, though it was cute at times.
I'm not sure how I stumbled across this one, but I'm sure glad I did. It was delightful. Kylie and Hagen are new neighbors and they don't get off on the best foot. Things continue to escalate and an all-out prank war is declared. It was really quite cute. I liked how their pranks were woven into the story.
While it was cute and entertaining, I did think the writing could be tightened up a bit. Some things could have been left out or didn't add to the progression of the story. It stays lighthearted throughout, but does have some ex drama (could have been developed more) and some stalker drama (definitely could have been developed more). Overall, this was a fun read and one I would totally recommend. If you enjoy lighthearted, romantic comedies, this hits the spot.

✨"Kylie Boone, I'm not looking for a girlfriend." Her eyes narrowed. "But I am looking for a wife. There is no one else in the world that I can imagine spending the rest of my life with. I love you with all of my heart."✨
I’m pretty sure I’ve found my new obsession 🥲 AH I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! This was literally the perfect book for me.
-Enemies to lovers -Prank wars -Hilarious banter -Adorable moments -Sweet/sassy main characters
Literally what else could I want in a book?! Hagen & Kylie are definitely being added to my favorite book couples
I absolutely can’t wait to read the rest of this series and I REALLY hope Hagen & Kylie appear because I just absolutely need to read about them some more!! I already miss them and their prank wars😭
Also I really hope Kylie’s cousins all get their own story (especially Mack bc he was so funny😂)
Neighbors Like That by Carina Taylor is a playful contemporary romance about Kylie Boone, who expects peaceful suburban bliss but instead finds herself in a full‑blown prank war with her handsome new neighbor Hagen, a man she initially misunderstands and firmly intends to best in their escalating daily antics, only for unexpected danger and deeper feelings to blur that rivalry into something more tender and sincere. It mixes enemies‑to‑lovers tension with light suspense and comedic neighborhood hijinks.
What stayed with me as I read this was how Kylie’s fierce independence and sharp wit made every prank, every backyard skirmish and every bantering exchange feel alive and genuinely funny, while Hagen’s quiet charm and growing protectiveness added warmth beneath the surface rivalry. Their chemistry first flickered through mischievous moments and then strengthened in quieter scenes where each began to see past initial impressions, a shift that made me root for them as more than just prank‑war adversaries. The suburban setting felt cozy and familiar, and the thread of a mysterious stalker subplot gave the story an unexpected layer of urgency without overshadowing the lighthearted heart of the romance. I especially loved how the humor and genuine affection between characters made me smile even in scenes that were meant to surprise me.
That said, at times the narrative felt a little uneven to me, with the pacing changing more abruptly than I expected and a few plot threads feeling more like distractions than enriching the core connection between Kylie and Hagen. For those who love slow‑burn connections wrapped in everyday charm, this book carries a lot of sweetness and fun; it just occasionally asks for patience between its most engaging moments.
Because of that warm blend of levity and heartfelt growth, I’m giving Neighbors Like That 4 out of 5 stars: it made me laugh, it made me care, and it reminded me that love can grow in the most unexpected backyard battles.
A cute, light story that had me cracking up time after time. Kylie and Hagen were so cute together and the mystery had me second guessing myself a few times.
Did no one else notice that when the cops said they'd arrested the stalker that no one asked who he was? Or am I the only one who would want to know that?
No one else seems to have noticed either that there's never a real explanation for how the villain could shoot at the hero at pointblank range and miss. The author did suggest that maybe he was shooting at someone else (?) but they never came forward and the issue was dropped.
So in spite of this having some fun moments, this is not an author I'll be reading again because she's instilled no confidence in me that she can write a truly satisfying story.
Not usually my thing, but I couldn't resist the lure of a frustration-free story. These two were impossible to dislike and were refreshingly realistic. Normal twentysomethings - minus the boatload of 'speshul issues' 🙄 - who act their age and have ordinary, everyday jobs? Whoa. Go figure. Their prank war was the best part of the story and I found myself laughing over one of them slipping a couple fake spiders into the other's auto. Sometimes simple, silly crap is the funniest. Cute book.
That was a fun read! I love it! I stumbled upon this book when I was casually looking in the Kindle store. I knew when I read the blurb that I was going to buy it right then and lo and behold, I'm so glad I did.
Neighbors Like That was a sweet, quick read! It was absolutely what I needed after finishing my last read. The story was entertaining with a light amount of suspense going on with the plot. Although, not gonna lie, it was predictable in my opinion. Some of the pranks were actually funny (except for that rubber snake, of course) and the banters coming from all of the characters were hilarious. The romance between Kylie and Hager was refreshing and cute. I enjoyed reading it.
Recommending this book if you like something light, fun and cute read.
Carina Taylor is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I loved the set-up: a guy and a girl living right across from the street who get pulled into a prank war. It was hilarious to watch two career-minded adults pull childish pranks on each other despite their growing attraction. And then when things escalate from a third party, Hagen takes the role of protector until her hillbilly cousins can swoop in...
If you like clean, sweet romance, laugh-out-loud comedy, and a drop of action, you'll adore this book.
My first book by this author and it definitely won't be my last. I loved the fun, flirty nature of this book and I also loved when it took a more serious turn. Hagen and Kylie are so much fun. I enjoyed their pranking and their banter and conversations. This romantic comedy was just what I needed today. It felt good all the way around. 4.5 stars, rounding up.
Who doesn't love a prank war? Even if there's blood involved? ;-) This sweet romance has humor and heart. The characters are lovable and have a great dynamic. It's easy to root for them to get together. I loved all the side characters that come in and out; that sets itself up well for a series starring each of the cousins! An enjoyable read from a new-to-me indie author!
This book had me laughing so hard! I’m so glad nobody was around. This was such a cute rom com and my first of this authors. I will definitely be reading mods from her. Loved the h and H. I liked that fact that the H had flaws.
As Kylie and Hagen’s prank war turns their relationship from neighbors to potential soulmates, Kylie is hunted by a stalker, family drama reaches its breaking point and some evil women (lol) are put into their place.
Enemies to lovers <3 Fun, sweet read. This was more romcom than romance. There was minimal angst, just the way I like it. I found both leads to be likable and sympathetic, though I was kind of thrown off by Kylie’s insistence on finding her soulmate by way of love at first sight.
In fact, her general views on what love should be all seemed childish. Thank god she let go of them pretty easily after getting close to Hagen —if not, she would’ve been quite the annoying heroine. Since discovering Carina Taylor yesterday, I’ve decided to read more of her books and I’m not the least bit disappointed.
Also, I live for Jason Bourne references since he was my childhood crush and will always have a special place in my heart.
I really enjoying this book. It was such a cute and quick read. I did have a few little problems that tainted the story just a little bit but I overall loved the characters, their dynamic and (most of) the plot line. I think the whole stalker plotline was a little predictable and slightly contrived. I think the result that came from this stalker issue could have been achieved without this stalker plot point. However, I am glad I read this and I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series.
I LOVED this book!! It has every I absolutely love, a sort of hate to love romance, pranking wars, and a stalker? Sign. Me. Up. I loved the characters so much, Kylie and Hagen are just the cutest book couple. I want to know them. And her cousins were absolutely hilarious!!! I'm mean it's 5:30a in the morning and since I tried to sleep last night and it was impossible, finishing this book made it completely worth not sleeping.
This was such a cute and quick read! I loved Hagen and Kylie’s romantic development through their pranks and games and managing ways to spend more time together! Their relationship really deepened as they got to know each other and he goes from being her pesky neighbor to night in shining armor! So cute!! I loved this and am looking forward to the other books in the series!
I loved that book! It took my sleep away - once I started reading I stayed until 2 am on a work day to finish it. It is hilarious, super entertaining, easy to read. I loved the interaction and chemistry between the characters. Honestly, I hadn't read such a funny, yet romantical and engaging book for quite a while! I am so looking forward for the next one!
Hate-to-love, a prank war, stalker, kidnapping, romance! It's like they personally wrote on this book "For Natalie, you absolute sucker". Kylie and Hagen were goals. What kind of guy would happily get into a brutal prank war just to make a girl smile? The love of my life that's who. *swoons* I am undecided whether these books have made my standards really high or just super specific.
Heading into this book, I really thought “okay, here we go. Another standard romance.” And while in the beginning it was definitely trope-y, I grew to love the Kylie/Hagen saga! I wasn’t expecting the mystery element, and I’m embarrassed to say that for once, I fell for the dang red herring. My only complaint is that the ending felt a little rushed. The climactic moment easily could have been another chapter or two. Anyways, I laughed out loud more times than I could count and then cried over the ending, so you should probably read this ASAP!
It was so hilarious and sweet <3 FMC and MMC were neighbors that went off on the wrong foot. Even though the first impression was a misunderstanding, they kept agonizing each others with childish funny pranks. I loved their dynamic, their inner child but most importantly how they crushed hard on each other.
I'll definitely be reading the next installments of the series. I need funny couples in my life like Heagan and Kylie.
I kinda just felt my last remaining brain cells take a lil sabbatical while reading this… and I wasn’t exactly mad about it.
This book knew exactly what it was and didn’t try to be anything it wasn’t…. I appreciated that.
Did this book have good character development and interesting side characters? Lmao no.
Did it have well written dialogue and narration? Nope. Zilch.
Did it have intriguing plot points and well thought out scenes? Hellllll nah.
Did I enjoy reading it and give it 3 stars? You be your ass I did.
It’s just vibes. It was cute and fun and had absolutely no real plot or purpose, and it’s exactly what I needed to neutralize my intense, actually well written high fantasy I’m currently reading lol.
This is a romance series, so I will continue to consume this glorious content of ✨nothing✨
I decided to give Carina Taylor books another chance, after being disappointed with Christmas Like This, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read another in this series. Neighbors Like That had some pretty good praise, and here we are! I honestly enjoyed this and it was a super quick read (under 300 pages).
I liked the chemistry between Kylie and Hagen. It was a very literal interpretation of enemies to lovers. A pranking war starts between the two and some hilarity ensues. Creativity was running high as things heated between them. It offered some great banter, close encounters and laughter.
One thing that didn’t quite add up was the attempted kidnapping sub-plot. It felt unnecessarily added to heighten the *drama* of the whole book, but it could have been left out and I would have been happy without it. Hagen had his own backstory and personal issues to deal with and those flowed much better into the story line.
I enjoyed the side characters and how much I could see those types of friends in my own life. They were fun, way too into everyone’s personal lives (but in a charming way) and I thought they were a great addition to Kylie and Hagen’s happenings.
Overall audience notes: - Contemporary romance - Language: none - Romance: kisses - Violence: physical - Trigger warnings: attempted kidnapping (with someone being held at gunpoint)
This was absolutely hilarious and so much fun. This enemies to lovers story had the best and most ridiculous pranks. They fall in love while also doing the dumbest things. Like him locking her garbage can or her putting vinegar in his drinking water or him shutting off her water or her shutting off his electricity. I have never seen such outlandish hijinks.
These two are the best and have a whole host of friends and family who are wonderful as well. I adored them and their relationship growth.
There is a suspense story arc that is in here that I enjoyed and helped to add a little tension and a reason for these two to team up. And his ex is around. But he’s long over with her.
They both have been single and there are no other people in their lives other than an overly pushy coworker, an almost date, and the ex from hell.
No sexy times. Just a sweet and lovely story that I adored. I will definitely be checking out more of this author’s books.
I'm not sure I would've picked this book to read if my copy's cover looked like the one here on Goodreads.
This started out fun. But then the cousins arrived on the scene. (Why?) And then the whole shooter incident at the end ruined it even more. I get that the author was trying to lead us astray with Jason from the gym, and the arresting of someone else, but it was clearly Lyle from the beginning, and the attempts at misdirection were just sloppy.
